Halley Feiffer is collaborating with original screenwriter Callie Khouri on a musical of Themla and Louise: Thelma and Louise doesnt seem like it would lend itself to muscialisation.(Is that even a word??) I can already see the car facing upstage, whilst the backwall video screen gives you their POV as the car flies off the cliff *somber chord* *blackout* THE END. Then Thelma and Louise comeback on stage, in their same costumes, but in white, signifying they're now angels, for the inevitable megamix finale. Sing out, Louise!

You just know that putting Seyfried and musical in the same sentence is gonna get me going and I’ll throw words like ‘insipid’ and ‘whiney’ and ‘vocally thin’ about. I may even stretch to ‘acting is more than widening ones eyes’, so its best that I don’t comment at this time. (Obviously, since she made that serious medical drama thingy people have forgotten so think that they’re diversifying somehow). Thank you.

Ugh. Just no. Of course, back in the stone age when I heard ALW was writing Phantom as a musical, I thought it was a rubbish idea, and still thought meh until I saw Crawford in the role. Then it became a favourite.
I could see Thelma & Louise it as perhaps a straight play, but honestly, if going over the cliff is handled like Jarvert's suicide or the car chase in the original production of Sunset I can see a lot of snickering in the stalls if it isn't done exactly right.
This is the same problem that Hollywood is having. Very little that's original and targeted toward adults is being made. The big studios are all corporate now, risk averse, and so using franchise properties and expanding each of those universes creates familiarity that is slightly different. It's just sad.
In the meanwhile, in the opera world, Philip Glass wrote Akhenaten, and Thomas Hampson starred in a new work about Hadrian that included the emperor's male lover. Both original, if based on historical characters, but pushing outside of the typical canon. I saw a fabulous steampunk inspired version of The Tales of Hoffman several years ago at the Met in NY. Why are opera companies taking more chances than MT producers? Maybe it is going to take the National Theatre to commission original musicals that are willing to ignore Hollywood properties. I know they're expensive to produce these days, but it would be nice to see something new that * isn't * a jukebox musical or another film adaptation. I don't think anyone expected Six or Come From Away, and they've both done well.

Indeed. Whilst the dregs of creativity are being scraped from the bottom of various barrels, it is great that braver composers are still using cultural & historical events to base their shows on. And not necessarily in big obvious ways (eg ‘Titanic’) but smaller ‘stories in a story’ like ‘CFA’, ‘The Bands Visit’ etc.

To be fair, there are far fewer new operas, so they stand out more and there have also been new operas based on existing stuff like recently The Handmaid's Tale, which is both a book AND A TV-show. There are also plenty of original musicals around - Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen or The Prom, to name but a few, or based only very vaguely on source material, such as Six, Hamilton or Hadestown. Movie adaptations can be anything from brilliant to horrible. The Bands Visit was a movie adaptation, too, just sayin' Whether Thelma & Louise will be any good - who knows? But given how many musicals still put men front and centre stage and have women either be supporting casts and/or just orbit around men, I welcome any show which is all about female friendship and two strong women. As for the end, I'd just have them sit in the car, rev the engine and then lower the curtain.

I AM however, really interested to see what The Turbine do with ‘Pump Up The Volume’. I guess they are hoping to repeat the success of another Christian Slater 90’s classic. The film already has a fantastic soundtrack of alt rock songs which I assume are being jettisoned?

Indecent Proposal was the worst Movie to musical show I've seen. How it even got past a workshop I'll never know.
Did anyone else see Peggy Sue Got Married? I thought it was great and Ruthie was wonderful, but it only lasted a few months, if that.
