Part of the ambitious and well thought out reopening festival at the Jermyn Street Theatre, this bio-play was originally a Watermill Theatre production.
Telling the story of aviation pioneer Amy Johnson, famous for being the first woman to fly solo to Australia and older of many flying records in her time, the play (written by Ade Morris) is a pleasing mixture of the personal and the public personae of the protagonist and is well staged, making excellent use of the Jermyn's tiny stage even for the various flying scenes!
Directed by Leah Betts the two-strong cast acts this out with gusto, Hannah Edwards enthusiastic, dignified and quietly moving as Amy Johnson and Benedict Salter versatile and funny at times as "The Man" - a misnomer as he plays a variety of roles (Amy's lover, her husband, her dad, her boss, her best friend), not all of which are male.
A good production.

I hope this is on Hull Truck's radar. With Amy Johnson's local connection, I'm sure it would do well.

And lo, it came to pass that Lone Flyer lands at Hull Truck in October.
It's just a gift I have! I need to add Theatre Programming Consultant to my business card, alongside Board Celebrity. 🙂
Also refuelling at the Watermill Theatre in September.
