I am really not sure what to make of that.
I know there is a huge amount of love for the production but that felt over exaggerated and like a surreal cartoon.
Perhaps seeing it out of context doesn't help

Perhaps seeing it out of context doesn't help I think it’s at its best when it stops trying too hard to be different and just tells the story, like in the Fräulein Schneider/Herr Schultz scenes.

Perhaps seeing it out of context doesn't help That how I feel everytime I see clips/performances or listening to the two tracks just released. It almost feels like they are taking the piss a bit with it.

Glad it's not just me.
I love Cabaret, it is one of these greatest stage musicals. But this just feels forced.
This was better than the Oliviers performance which was painful
But it isn't how I view the piece.

I watched the Royal Variety Performance and also was not too impressed. I saw the production last year and for me the weakest link was Eddie Redmayne, it wasn't the best acting but it certainly was the most. I remember the Time Out review voiced my feeling, and said Redmayne treated this small role as if it where Hamlet. I have to say Scott Howells seems to be channeling a similar manic Emcee that feels too forced and modern. It does not work in my opinion.
For me the production had so many wonderful moments but was never perfect. I did love Buckley so look forward to listening to her songs again.

Perhaps seeing it out of context doesn't help I feel similar, and I'm incredibly curious about this production, but I'm not sure how it's going to match up to the Sam Mendes and Rufus Norris versions (West End and the touring version)

This was better than the Oliviers performance which was painful But it isn't how I view the piece. I LOVED Amy Lennox as Sally, probably more than I did Jessie Buckley, and thought her Olivier performance was fantastic, though it did seem an odd number to presennt, given how it's done in the show. I listened to the 2 tracks released from the new recording and i feel that JB sang Mein Heir more, rather than the way she did it on the 2 times i saw her, which was quote shouty. I wonder if she changed it slightly on the nights they were recording.

Buckley toned down the title song considerably in the cast recording, she was shoutier and crazier every time I saw her

I didn't like the way Buckley did the Cabaret number on stage and found all the histrionics unnecessary. Probably it's the way she was directed, but for me it didn't work.

For me…Maddie Brewer was the best mix of acting and singing. For me, she WAS Sally

Rumour has it that she had to go into the recording studio to fix a couple of her songs as they were too "screamy" which the producers thought impossible to listen to when it came to a recording.

I forget the exact wording, but the booklet says something like recorded live at the Kit Kat Club, then a credit for additional recording somewhere else. It’s apparently pretty common on live albums.

Glad it's not just me who didn't like the Royal Variety performance. I'd been thinking about going for a return visit to see Callum, after seeing Fra earlier this year, but based on that performance I'm glad I didn't bother. I know the songs don't work as well out of the context of the show, but that was just too OTT for me.

Finally seeing this today at 2pm. Ticket says my entry time is 1pm. Do I really have to be there an hour early? I know there is the “prologue” stuff, but is that compulsory?

It's not compulsory, but unlike my usual turning up about 10 minutes before curtain I'd want at least half an hour. I took the full 60 minutes when I was on my own and wasn't bored but if watching lower key music and dance performances isn't your thing then don't bother with that long.

Wow, what an amazing production!
What’s with Sid Sagar though? Same monotone voice throughout the show, just with the volume turned up to show anger at the end. Considering he has the last lines it’s very disappointing.
Otherwise… wow!

Omar Baroud was marginally more engaging but still clearly following the same template.

Cliff is a bland character. As an actor there isnt a huge amount you can do with it. Even less now its basically a non singing role, apart from 1 verse in Perfectly Marvellous.
Re the recording: Jessie Buckley practically sings 'Cabaret' its completely different to how it was done in performance. Overall its not a bad recording, but I'll stick with the OLCR with Judi Dench and Kevin Colson. And why if its a live recordiing, is there only applause on random songs?
