I see the accomplished stage actor Ronal Pickup has died. I was sure I must have seen him on stage lots of times but it turns out I only saw him twice: in 1985 in Little Eyolf with Diana Rigg and in 2008 in Uncle Vanya at Kingston. His spell at the NT under Olivier was before my time. It sounds a bit disparaging to call him a supporting actor but of course they are absolutely vital in any good production, more so than the leads in some cases.

He voiced Aslan in the BBC Chronicles of Narnia series in the 80s, the definitive screen versions of the books.

Another sad loss. He alternated between leading men and support parts but was always credible and very professional with excellent diction.
As an anecdote after attending a Rufus Wainwright concert at Kenwood House we found a bus pass in the name of Lans Pickup. It was such a distinctive name (never met anyone else with that surname) that rather than hand it in I thought it might be worthwhile checking if it was Ronald's wife, which indeed it was. I contacted his agent and they came back confirming it was Mrs Pickup's pass, and she actually sent a very nice message thanking us for saving her time and effort in renewing it.

He alternated between leading men and support parts Yes, I see from the obituaries he had a lot of major screen credits for TV and films right up till very recently. I see he had the misfortune to be in two absolute car crash NT productions: Conal Morrison's "Peer Gynt" and Tim Supple's "Romeo and Juliet" which both had appalling reviews and were beset by massive off-stage problems - no wonder he seemed to favour screen work. |
