All these adaptions strip the characters of the the theatricality and campness the original characters benefited from in my opinion.
To me nothing sets this apart from the other adaptions and having just watched Birds of Prey, Cruella and the design looks exactly like it's from that world.
Also I think making Cruella a 'demon' (?) really takes away from the horror of the character.
I know it's an origin story and these follow a typical pattern of saying the villain is just misunderstood.
I also hate the wigs bar the one where she's a mess, some of the costumes in the film look like they've been designed for the older Cruella rather than a young Cruella. From the trailer it looks like they don't strike the right balance between the darker gritty moments and the upper class world she inhabits, but I think the trailer is poor because we don't really get a sense of where the film is going bar some cliched lines about feminism.

I got Birds of Prey vibes off that trailer too. I enjoyed that film though so that’s not an issue for me.

Ah yes, just what we need, a two hour film about an evil puppy killer. What's next, the tragic upbringing of The Child Catcher?

Indeed; and given the impact breeding animals for the black market has had on the globe now, possibly a bit raw too. Not to mention how irrelevant animal fabrics and fur are these days. We don't need fiction glorifying skin suits. Yes suspension of disbelief and all that but, no time for this. Let have something original Disney, not some spinoff, hacked up side story. Edit: also 2hrs might be pushing it

Does it remind you of anything? It reminds me of a song from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Goes Public. I used to have a CD of that show but can't find it and it hasn't made it's way to streaming. Here's an infomercial and the melody that comes in at 4:53 I was reminded of. I hope I find the CD because I loved listening to it to 2 or 3 songs, one of my favourite Broadway flops. Edit: Video is cringe be warned.

Is anybody planning to see this? As much as I love Emma Stone, call me a cynic but I just can't get past the whole 'she's a puppy killer' thing. They can give her the most tragic backstory ever, it still won't change who she becomes. Some reviews seem to be saying she turns into some sort of feminist icon and... I'm just not sure this is the role model Disney wants! Aside from anything else, Cruella has so much less scope for development than somebody like Maleficent.

The early reviews have been good, so I am now intrigued to see this. She's a fictional character so I have no interest in her being a role model for anything.

I enjoyed it. It's a really well made film and they obviously spent a fortune on it. As press reviews have mentioned, it's very similar to another fashion based film and I'm surprised its not called The Devil Wears Dalmatian. Emma Thompson as Miranda Priestly The Baroness camps it up wonderfully and looks stunning. The costumes are excellent and I can imagine they took up a chunk of the budget. Emma Stone is great as Estella/Cruella. I've never seen the animated 101 Dalmatians, only the Glenn Close film, and thankfully Stone doesn't go to those extremes. I found her one of her later scenes very touching.
I didn't realise he was in it, but John McCrea (original Jamie New) has a great little recurring role and Mark Strong is woefully underused in a minor role. He also looks very odd in a (terrible) wig. Also, living in London, it irks me when they film in different locations, but make it look like it's correct. Example, you don't go south over Waterloo Bridge to get to Regents Park, but it looks pretty so they use it.
I know its a Disney film, but there was a lot of implausibility and i found some of it predictable, but if you go along for the ride, its a fun 2hrs 10.

I've downloaded it and it's my plan for later today, also featuring pyjamas, cups of tea and Lidl's version of Oreos. The joys of being alone! 🤣

Saw it this afternoon.
It's a perfectly pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Did get to the end and go...why did they bother though? You simply cannot improve on the Cruella that Glenn Close gave us, and I don't think the film REALLY explained why she ended up as the one we know from the 90s. Probably just about passes the 6 laugh test, although I can't help but think it would have been wittier if Thompson had helped with the screenplay.
Both Emma's were good (Stone probably slightly better but that's cause the Baroness just isn't fleshed out at all). Saw the twist coming a mile off, Costumes were the best part of the film - truly an astonishing design (I want everyone one of Thompsons outfits). I did really like the design.
Overall it's another example of 'why brother's with these Disney sequel/prequel/origin stories. There is a good story there, but I think the script needed another draft before going to shoot.
3 stars.

Hmmm. I'm in 2 minds about this one.
Yes it looks great, stunning costumes, and Stone and Thompson are fabulous. It also has one of the best movie soundtracks I've heard in ages.
But it got off to a very slow start, took ages to properly get going, and I'm really not sure it explains how she becomes someone willing to kill animals for fashion. Yes she's vamping it up by the end, but there's still a missing link to get to murder! It's like it needed one final push into psychosis that didn't happen.
Worth a watch but I'm not sure it achieved what it set out to do.

I enjoyed it, and thought the cast did a great job. However, at the end of the film, I was thinking that it didn’t really need to be made - Cruella is not a likeable character (which makes a great villain), and does not need to be shown as being more human.
Some parts, like Anita being so close in age to Cruella jarred because of my memories of 101 Dalmatians. I also thought Mark Strong was wasted in a part so small.

Well what a lot of fun this was.
How great was it to be back in a cinema again!
I think some of the previous points raised above are very valid but I found this to be (and this is not a word I use often) fabulous.
Especially the hair, make up and costumes.
This is a classic example of how when you throw lots of money at the costumes how a film can turn out; that rubbish truck dress- wow!
Emma Thompson is purely the most evil of Disney villains.
The whole thing os very lush and opulent.
Both Joel Fry (of TV's Plebs fame) and Paul Walter Hauser as Jasper and Horace respectively are great!
Also look out for Alex Gaumond as the sleeping security guard who gets his nose hair plucked.
If watching I would advise at the end there are two sets of credits. Hang around till after the first set of credits to see how this seamlessly blends into the start of 101 Dalmatians story.
A killer soundtrack!
Fabulous!

Also, this wasn't that story. There's plenty of time for that in the bound to happen sequel. But they'll never make her an animal killer in any film.
anthony40 Thanks for the tip about the mid credits scene. I went back to watch it and it does perfectly set up the next film, though i'm pretty sure even that won't be the 101 story.
Fun story - I went to the wrap party for the Glen Close 101 Dalmatians film. It was held on the backlot of Shepperton Studios where it was filmed, and they had about 3 massive marquee's and each one was made in a dalmatian spot print. The amount spent on that 1 party was millions. It was also the first night i got drunk in front of my older sister!

I don't know what version of the 1996 film you watched, but she paid a guy to skin a tiger for her, offered to buy all the dalmation puppies so she could have them killed and skinned, and by end was trying to stab the puppies herself in the barn with a cattle prod. She's an unhinged ruthless villain, we already know what she's capable of and we love her anyway. 'Cruella' as a film was supposed to show us how she became that person. It doesn't. Of course I don't expect to ever see her kill an animal on screen, that's not what I'm saying, but as an origin story, 'Cruella' should show us how she ends up going to those lengths, or at least hint at it. I'm glad you all liked it! I just don't see the point of an origin story that doesn't bring you to the point where the character you know begins. It shouldn't need another 2 hour sequel to finally get there.

Being an animal killer is all Cruella is known for. It is her defining trait. Also the inciting incident involving Dalmatians in Cruella, I laughed solidly for five minutes. Such lazy writing.

Why is it lazy writing? That incident doesn’t actually have any impact on her feelings towards animals or Dalmatians in particular. She doesn’t blame the dogs at all.

Loved it. Huge fun, daft but stylish and yes… THE FROCKS!
Nice to see the original Jamie as the shop owner. John McCrea… I recognised his voice immediately even under all that slap and a wig.
