Russell T Davies on It's A Sin: 'We were all Aids deniers - then it got real' www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-55632032Deep reservations about this after the good start/dire ending Years And Years. I’m not sure I want to give Mr Davies any more of my time. But I probably will 😝

I hope it is as good as series one of QAF... More likely to be like the final episode of series 2 with the flying car 🙄

Also, can I just say that when he says “we were all AIDS deniers”.. no Russell we weren’t ALL AIDS deniers. It all kicked off just as people my age should have been exploring their sexuality and I along with most gay men I knew were absolutely petrified. It totally changed our behaviour which is probably why we’re still here to tell the tale. I find RTD to be a one-trick pony. Sorry Dr Who fans! Cucumber was ok but clichéd AF. Years and Years started ok but turned into a preposterous mess. He’s overrated.

Tonally this is a tough project to get right. It needs to be realistic about the death, grief and loss but also have to celebrate life and the heroes who fought back.

I'm looking forward to it! I was at school in 1981, but started FoH (part time) in '83 while I was in 6th Form, by '86 I was working in the West End permanently, it's my era! I've read several articles about the show and it really has brought back memories about the confusion and lack of information. I've had friends die from HIV/AIDS and even in the late 1990's know people whose families denied the true cause of death. There is less stigma now, but I'm sure it still exists I was clubbing at Heaven, and JoJo's and the Piano Bar. I was spotting or foh for Midnight Matinees and volunteering for Sunday Concerts to raise money for charities.
I understand 'We were all Aids deniers - then it got real'

I can well believe that some people were in complete denial and convinced that it was a hoax while others were terrified and completely changed their behaviour - we’ve certainly seen those extremes with Covid!

I follow quite a few TV types who've seen the series and many are saying it's going to go down as one of the best shows for years. Who knows whether to believe these people though and of course everyone has their own views and tastes.

To be honest, Russell T Davies on a bad day is still better than a lot of TV drama. Years and Years didn't work all that well but it was always interesting. Now that he's back in Queer As Folk territory I'm expecting big things. Plus apparently one of his unused Doctor Who scripts is being made into an audio drama so that's exciting!

I'm hoping it will be a good drama, but safe in the knowledge there will be a great soundtrack to go with it.

If you read the full interview it's a lot more nuanced then everyone being a denier. He even talks about specific people who weren't and of course this all happened over a period of time, the denial faded quickly once people became aware of the reality of it but that didn't happen immediately.
I'll be watching, even his weaker stuff is a hell of a lot more distinctive & creative than the average British drama.
Particularly looking forward to the scenes on the set of 80's Doctor Who! Itself inspired by the memory of a Doctor Who guest star who he knew, who died very young of AIDS.

It is very clear from the interview that these are his experiences with the people he knew at the time. Not everyone. Bit unfair to attack him because of a headline...if you don't like him, fine, but from the comments here he doesn't seem 'overrated'.

I’m not expecting too much of this, like @burlybear I find much of his work has been a bit cliched and obvious , but I’ll watch , especially since they made part of the series in the house next door but one to where I was living in late 2019. They filmed outside my house too , and paid us to leave our cars out of shot . I turned down a good sum to use my house as a green room , I had the house for sale at the time so didn’t want prospective purchasers having to pick their way through discarded paper coffee cups and pizza boxes . Of course, we were definitely not ALL aids deniers , like many others these were my formative years and I was well aware of what was happening, it was frightening and very restricting for a lot of us.

I'm rather looking forward to this and do like his writing. I've never watched Dr Who so can't speak for that. I'm an 80s person so it's going to be interesting. I was slightly out of touch with what was happening in London with AIDS as I was living abroad for the whole of that decade doing my "holiday rep" thing. Used to come back for short visits to London and frequented Heaven, Copacabana in Earls Court etc. I do know that some of my friends at the time did die of the virus but as I was out of the country I was out of the loop really. On a lighter note one of the leads is a young Welsh lad called Callum Howells who had his west end debut in She Loves Me at the Menier. Really nice lad.

I don’t think so 🙂 I was giving my opinion which is that he is overrated. I haven’t tried to shut anyone down who disagrees. It’s opinion and mine is as valid as anyone else’s.

Excellent first episode and really good all round cast. I agree with alece10 - I’m going to treat it like an old fashioned tv show and watch it weekly 😉

I love Colin. Such a sweet, well-rounded character and played well.
The music is fabulous.
But I can't say it is an easy watch.
That era shaped my life and knowing what is to come for the characters is difficult. This is how it should be. But it does make it emotionally draining.
Well made if a little predictable in terms of how RTD creates characters.

Agree with all the above. It flicked from comedy to tragedy so quickly. Great music (My era) and although only the 80's seemed like so much longer ago. The characters were all interesting and you certainly are interested to see what happens next, although as has already occurred in Episode 1 there is unlikely to be a happy ending. As above not an easy watch, but it is something to look forward to. I always watch things normally!!No binging here!!I think every gay man can see something of himself in one or more of these characters.

Actually he looked inexperienced but was one of those people where I think - "He's someone to watch out for" I was just trying to work out how old he was when he was at the Menier. In a recent interview with Attitude magazine it says he is 21 and She Loves Me was at the Menier in 2016 so he would have only been 16 at the time. He was still at drama school. I remember he was so enthuastic and a real breath of fresh air, loving every minute of it. I used to chat to him quite a bit during the breaks in the show and he was like a kid who had just eaten 3 bags of Haribo.
