I was there too!! Kerry Ellis looked as if she was really enjoying herself. Wasn’t keen on Dennis Lawson and the person playing Hope was weak vocally. Bonnie Langford just overacts all the time and why did she have to do the high kick as she left the stage? Attention seeking and self indulgent. I liked Bonnie. If you can overact in anything, then you can in this show. The whole thing is extremely camp.

I was blown away by this last night. It was great to see a good old fashioned musical with brilliant singing, amazing dancing and fabulous costumes. The act one finale and Blow Gabriel Blow were incredible. I loved Kerry as Reno, and afterwards I did something I've never done before and waited at stage door to tell her how much I enjoyed it. She was lovely!

Sounds like Denis has come on a lot since Bristol then? Is he actually getting the laughs now?

Sounds like Denis has come on a lot since Bristol then? Is he actually getting the laughs now? I have to say I wasn’t fully onboard with him at the start. It’s very different to Robert Lindsay’s bombastic take on the role. Denis plays the comedy a bit more low key/shambolic and yes he was getting the laughs. Carly was outstanding again. That bit where Erma says to Moonface “You’re public enemy number thirteen… Police. Help.” Cracked me up.

Brilliant

I caught the first show at the Barbican last night. Loved it! House seemed almost full from where I was sitting but not sure about the stalls. There was no show stop but the curtain was about 15 minutes late going up, they announced that they were having technical issues with the Fly system but luckily they fixed it in a couple minutes. The only negative I have is that sound levels in the Gallery should have been louder. Kerry Ellis was great, nice to see her do a big show again and the applause after Blow Gabriel Blow was never ending, she seemed taken aback. (The real star of the show is Sam Edwards' arms though). Looking forward to going back.

Woah - half time on a Monday evening in a Barbican that is probably 90% full and this cast is killing it. Kerry Ellis is sensational as Reno - vocally brilliant, nailing the tap and just a little less "starry" than Sutton Foster. Simon Callow is superb as Whitney, brilliantly almost walking off stage into the audience without his glasses on - he's worth the ticket alone. Denis Lawson has big shoes to fill as Moonface Martin but does so with aplomb. Pleasant voice and adding his own flavour to the role. No Bonnie tonight sadly. Rest of the cast as good as last year, and thus show has the same infectious joy and silliness as last year. Happy audience, buoyant cast, superb orchestra. Happy Days. Book, book, book - well worth seeing again, andvtgats just after the first half!

Looking forward to seeing this again soon for a 3rd time.

Second half was every bit as good as the first half. I'm a fan of Denis Lawson and think following Robert Lindsay is a tough gig, but he did it well. The bluebird song was good - played differently to last time. Blow Gabriel Blow was well received and the choreography was fantastic, especially from above (I was in a slip seat). Forgive me if I'm istaken, but I don't recall a musical stop in last year's production where BGB choreography and music frozen for a second before kicking back in slightly faster - if it happened, it wasn't as good as tonight! I've run out of positive words for Kerry Ellis - she's THAT good that she made the part look easy. She also has a wonderful connection with the audience, instinctively knowing what works without labouring her craft or being stagey. She's every bit as good as Sutton Foster, in my view. Simon Callow was an utter delight - so convincing was he as the bumbling Whitney, I genuinely wondered if it was acting or real. His comic timing is fantastic. The roles carried over by last year's cast are like old friends, but Carly Mercedes Dyer pretty much blew the roof off the Barbican with her performance, and she got a hell of a roar at the end, and rightly so.
This show is such a delight and the cast seemed taken back by the reception of the audience. The theatre had a few spare seats but I was surprised how full it was for a Monday.
Go see it - I've got hot pants for this show.

Delighed to hear it's going down well at The Barbican. I thought the show and this tour cast were glorious and deserved better audiences (numbers wise) on tour.

Saw this on Monday with a Stalls rush seat. There were lots of Stalls seats available at the start of the day, but by the evening, they'd closed the upper level and the Stalls were full, so make of that what you will if you're buying tickets.
This did lead to a pretty horrible audience, especially due to talking. Managed to get some people behind me to finally shut up, then an usher came over during the interval to say there had been a report of someone sitting in the same seat taking photographs. Typical.
The show is just as spectacular as last year. Quite a bit of restaging, especially during Blow Gabriel Blow, which I thought worked really well. I did miss Gary Wilmot though. Nicole-Lily Baisden's voice was rather strained. Bonnie Langford was away, so I will have to go back and see here, but enjoyed Anna McGarahan as the cover. And spotted Josh Barnett on stage as well, which is always a bonus.
Will be back later in the run.

Does anyone know if they’ve kept the change in Bluebird from the tour? Always wondered if it was a tour constraint or artistic choice. What was the difference? You sure it wasn’t something that was because of a different actor playing the role?

There's no hat anymore, so it's just a spotlight rather than the hat that had the light in it

Not gonna lie I thought Denis had just forgotten to bring the hat on in Bristol considering how much he was f*cking up in general 💀

I wonder why they changed it as the hat was charming. And a pretty cheap, uncomplicated effect you’d assume. It was just a hat with a blue led light unit. I was surprised not to see it on the tour.

Lawson is pretty charmless as Moonface, so its a very 'fine' number now - I don't think he'd be able to make as much of it as Lindsay did.

Saw this tonight. Agree that Lawson is terribly weak in the role. Likewise Bonnie is pretty terrible. She’s just playing Bonnie, absolutely no sense of any character.
However
Kerry Ellis. Sensational. A very different take on the role than Sutton, but wonderful all the same.
This remains a joyous evening out.

I noticed they changed a few things in the production this year, but the changes were all small - maybe the biggest one is the absence of the hat with the light as mentioned above. I listed a few I noticed in case anybody is interested:
- When Billy enters Moonface’s cabin, Moonface also kneels to pretend to pray. Last year it was just Erma in front of a standing Moonface. They basically removed the sexual joke of the scene. - When Whitney confesses “There was a time I drank” just before Blow Gabriel Blow, they changed “What time was that, half an hour ago?” to something like “Do you use a funnel now?”. - Reno’s costume in Blow Gabriel is slightly different - she has some sort of red sleeves now in the same style of the rest of her dress. - When they swap clothes in the cell, they actually manage to put the jackets on all the way. It’s slightly less awkward now, in my opinion. - When we see Whitney singing in his cabin, he is shaving. I believe that wasn’t the case last year. - Mooney does not steal Whitney’s champagne anymore. - Luke shows us his deck of cards when Henry introduces him.
Again, they are all very minor changes. I’d be curious to know if anybody noticed other things.

Also, I think Bonnie Langford is sensational in this. Granted, I only saw her a couple of times before this, so maybe I was not bothered by the whole Bonnie being Bonnie mentioned above.

Also noticed additional sleeves for Kerry on the finale dress! Maybe she heard it’s cold in the Barbican.
