I did- some of them I did not recognize, some of them I did, and Ben Platt looks really silly compared to the ones I did recognize.

I've just seen and quite loved, there's nothing new, but I like the topic of the musical, it's not very often that they do these ''modern weird musical'' vibe on Broadway and the score is just too catchy.
While the whole plot with the school and project is ok, the entire thing with the two families, linked by a captivating lead character, really is touching and moving. The last 20 minutes of the second act made me cry like a young baby.
I'm obsessed with ''Waving Through a Window'', ''For Forever'' and ''Words Fail'', as you notice, I just can't stop love Mr. Ben Platt.
The cast is tremendous, but Platt and Bay Jones hit out of the park with their performances, it's just so perfect.

About to see the matinee. Got in like 3:30am and got the penultimate pair of the standing tickets for the matinee.
Almost exactly a year since I first saw it! So excited

Well, what a show! I enjoyed it just as much, if not more on a second viewing.
The show is tighter, and the central performance from Ben Platt has somehow strengthened - he's just wonderful. You can not take your eyes off him, the raw yet controlled emotion in his voice I'm not sure how he does it. I think he's a pretty safe bet for the Tony, and (not yet having seen Natasha/Come From Away) I think it's a likely choice for musical/book/score.

I've been listening to the cast recording pretty much non-stop for the past couple of weeks, it's nothing new or groundbreaking but it's very catchy, and showcases the best of Pasek and Paul's work. I very much enjoyed Dogfight and Edges of their previous work; DEH is, I'd say, even stronger than both of them.
It's a shame that any fairly successful Broadway show gets a national tour within months of opening, I mean Charlie was (arguably) a flop and that got one, whereas here we're lucky if our new work lasts more than a year. I would love to see Dear Evan Hansen or Waitress on our shores, it's sad that we aren't producing great new shows at the same rate as our cousins in the states.

I don't mean it's a shame that they get a national tour, I mean it's a shame that they have such a quickly implemented way of making their shows accessible to people all over America, whereas in the UK it's not quite the same, it tends to be West End OR UK Tour, or in a lot of cases "West End, oh dear we lost a bit of money, well let's put it on tour with a smaller cast and no investment and see if we can make some of that money back", the theatre appreciation isn't the same. |

I agree. TBH I think it's due to a mixture of market size/spend, coupled with the producers wiling to take risks from the get go. When their shows become hits on Broadway, they tend to capitalize on that immediately and announce tours that start selling a year in advance.

Gave this another try tonight as I hate not understanding why others love something so much and on paper this is so up my street. But nah I just can't get there with it. The great things:
- Ben Platt
- The staging of You Will Be Found
- The emotions of So Big/So Small
- Waving Through a Window
Everything else ranges from 'eh' to bad for me. I actually was super bored this time throughout all of the dialogue parts and a couple of the songs. I even prefer Groundhog Day to be honest. I really think it will be a travesty if this show wins Tonys beyond the performances when Great Comet exists (yet to see Come From Away) but it's probably going to happen so I better get used to it.

And I also really enjoy the Sincerely Me scene (although I could do without the ''we're not gay!!" stuff) if only because it's something upbeat in the midst of endless ballads.

Sincerely Me is a genuinely funny number that I think also hits on a lot of real humor you'd get from teen nerds. It's also a welcome respite!

Thank you for posting this. I liked Dear Evan Hansen, and thought it was powerful. But I'm so over the popularity of the show that really caters to the masses. As a piece of entertainment, it's great. But it's lacking in depth and layers. It's really unfortunate that it will beat Groundhog Day, which is by far more sophisticated and intellectually written than DEH.

I just find the DEH score to be generic in comparison to its main rivals. I'm also sceptical of its chances in the UK precisely because of that very American look at lies and justification for them. Given that their president is a turbo charged walking example I think we will be much more cynical and less prone to forgive.
