I was about to pick up last minute tickets for tomorrow afternoon but I'm fairly put off by the idea of 34 degree heat in an un-airconditioned Donmar...

This has been extended to 5th Sept. Lots of singles still available and it was a lot cooler the second time I went. They had three portable air conditioning units in the circle which you couldn't hear with the headphones on but made a considerable difference to the stifling heat!

This is really more like listening to a radio play in a public arena, the sound is indeed impressive and I did occasionally move my headphones just to make sure Juliet really wasn't next to me. The work itself is a sort of more literary "Day of the Triffids" with pasteis de nata thrown in. Juliet Stevenson needs no introduction and she tells the story both powerfully and sensitively
Thanks to the Donmar for the vision to present this, and to the staff for making the awkward arrangements work smoothly, but this is not a possible future for theatre, it is gratefully received in the present dearth of live entertainment and it is entertaining and worthy in its own right; but it is not about to give birth to a new genre to replace the old theatre. And it is economically ruinous.
