With something as virulent as this the answer is to take measures long before you think they are necessary. We’ve seen this already and savvy countries are clamping down hard on the slightest outbreak (we aren’t, we have sustained low level transmission). If you think it’s too soon to react, it’s the right time to react. As for vaccine, the question is at what point the viral risk outweighs the side effect risk. We are on the same song sheet for your first paragraph. With regards to vaccine, there are people who will not take a vaccine, which is fine, if they want to catch Covid and risk the complications that goes with it, then I have absolutely no problem with that. What people don’t have a right to do is transmit it to other people, who are going about their own law abiding way of life. Absolutely, they are there for national emergencies, if the supermarket and the police don’t enforce it, the armed forces can and should. No point in making laws, if they’re not going to be enforced. Answered it yourself. There for national emergencies not martial law. I've been highly critical of Trump and threats to deploy the army on to the streets. I don't think that is a very good idea for the government or the military

Agree with that and, presumably, other countries will legislate so that anti vaxxers will face fines, maybe more, to have them comply. Johnson melts into a puddle at the thought of telling people to do something for the common good, however, so the chances of it happening here are, sadly, remote. I've read no one quite knows if the ECHR will accept compulsory vaccination for adults or rule it a breach of human rights which will complicate things in Europe.
Remember the UK has not even made the MMR compulsory for Children so it be a bit of a surprise if they do it for the adult public.
Won't be the only country through - the anti vax movement in the UK is relatively weak and doesn't have the political support it has in some countries - look in America where some are scared of anti - vaxers.

We are in a scary place when a life saving vaccination could be seen as a breach of human rights.

But on the flipside isn't someone who refuses to have a vaccination that would stop them carrying and spreading a virus a breach of everyone else's human rights? I appreciate it just goes round and round without any one definitive answer but I don't know how it can be solved!

I’ve said this before but treatment is just as important as a vaccine and I wouldn’t be surprised if more are discovered in the next few months.

Obviously he can't see crew testing but a lot of people seem to think passengers are being temperature tested and that is used to justify full planes - I certainly did.

Cases up a bit today - hopefully just more testing of the barely or non symptomatic rather than new clusters - but with poor enforcement of so many measures i am finding it hard to be positive.

To give the army extra powers you'd need to pass emergency legislation or declare a State of Emergency. I'm not exactly sure how state of emergency procedures work and with the devolved administrations it may even be more complicated than before. The forces can easy to deployed to assist, rescue and marshall but sending them out to carry out enforcements is a different thing. Even when Raul Moat was on the rampage it was armed response police trying to track him down when getting the Special Forces may have made more sense and ended it much quicker.

Has anyone else noticed our case numbers creeping up again. Deaths and Hospital Admissions seem to still be falling/levelling off though. A lot depends on how many daily tests are done as this can vary by 30k plus per day. I'd live a percentage per test figure each day ideally.

I think the figures are fairly flat at the moment, and that's expected. With more people getting out and meeting more often there are more opportunities for the virus to spread so the decline in the number of cases will slow and may even reverse for a short time until people settle down into a new routine.
If there is a small rise in the long term trend I don't see it as a reason for panic. The last time the western world had to deal with a pandemic society was very different from the way it is today. This is a first for us, and right now there is not one single person in the world who knows what to do: not the scientists, not the governments, and certainly not the Internet commenters authoritatively throwing around terms they hadn't even heard of six months ago. We have to find a balance between a lockdown that obliterates the economy and leaves us with half a million dead from poverty and a laissez faire approach that leaves us with half a million dead from Covid-19, and until we try it we have no idea where that balance is.
So there's a chance that the number of cases may start to rise a little, in which case action will be taken to bring it back down again. That's already happened on a local level, and it will almost certainly happen again. As long as we don't let it get out of control like we did in March we'll be fine. We're in a very different situation from the USA, where in some areas they reopened everything at well above the WHO-recommended level of cases and assumed it was all over before they'd even halted the rise.

An increased rate of targeted testing will mean you detect more cases; it doesn't necessarily mean that cases are increasing. I think hospital admissions and death rates are the key indicators (though of course the latter aren't reliable either); both are currently decreasing.

Yet the numbers wearing them only reaches that % on trains and not on buses or in shops. Four buses today, all long journeys and in total only 5 people not wearing masks - fairly even split as 3 male/2 female and 3 mid to late 20's/2 mid to late 40's. As I was upstairs coming back I was also being nosy as other buses went by and the vast majority were wearing masks, certainly in such numbers that the ones who weren't really stood out

The Journalist Benjamin Butterworth has put on Instagram that no temperature checking happened while he flew with BA. I flew on BA yesterday from Barcelona to Heathrow. No temperature checks, we got fed mid flight (I was in cattle class). The contact locator form was a joke. The online form kept freezing, I could of put anything down and no one would of checked as we left the airport no one was checking if we had completed it or not.

PineappleForYou The temp checks are done as you queue up to check in/bag drop - easy not to notice as just done as you walk past. If you don't bag drop and check in online, I wonder if they do it elsewhere orif they just miss you? When you say fed - on my BA flight they just slung a plastic bag with water and crisps in at us, did you get actual food? Jealous if so! I think the time has come for a bit of managed risk; we can't sit at home forever.
