Twitter is a conspiracy theorist hellscape. You really notice it when you start browsing timelines of the people who are smearing Dr Fuaci.

And Trump finally acknowledges that the US has a problem.
I'm a bit confused by his actions. I can understand him wanting to seem calm about it all, but more and more it looks as though he genuinely believed he could simply ignore the problem and it would go away by itself, or at least that his supporters wouldn't notice all the deaths and vote him into a second term if he kept denying that anything was wrong.

It appeared that he and his advisors thought leaving it to the states would diffuse attention and blame away from him and his administration's callousness and many missteps. But with his poll numbers consistently declining for many weeks and with Biden's improving at the same time, they now want to at least pretend they care and are on top of it all (which they most certainly are not).

My mum said she was the only customer in the supermarket this morning wearing a mask - it's clear people are not going to comply in two days time and I am not sure many shops will enforce it.

I found that yesterday. I didn't enjoy wearing the mask but it's really invalidating when you make the effort to comply and others don't, and even then it's hardly a lot of effort to stick a mask on! I genuinely don't know how they're going to enforce this. So many people will sadly try to exploit the system and say they are exempt. And also what's to stop people wearing the mask into the shop and then taking it off once inside? I know big supermarkets have security staff but I really worry about the smaller shops.

Most of the smaller independent shops near me have a council provided sign saying what the customer limit is and nothing else- very few screens or sanitizer and not even many with staff wearing masks.

I didn't wear a mask at the shop this week, but I will from Friday when it is mandatory.

It doesn't need everyone to follow the rules at all times, even though they ought to. It just needs enough of a majority to be effective, and given that the shops started opening weeks ago and infection levels have remained low the system appears to be working despite the few people who seem to imagine they have been granted a natural immunity by being arrogant arseholes.

I didn't wear a mask at the shop this week, but I will from Friday when it is mandatory. Can I ask why? Because in all honesty, the time for a mask was at the start of this pandemic, not now. I wear a mask at work for hours upon hours a day. Not because I want to, but because I have to. If I was told tomorrow they were now optional, I wouldn't wear one, because then the government advice would obviously mitigate the risk vs benefit. If the advice is to wear one from Friday, then obviously it has been decided that the risk/vs benefit isn't urgent.

I didn't wear a mask at the shop this week, but I will from Friday when it is mandatory. Similarly, I didn't wear a mask on public transport till it became mandatory but I do now. Basically because I didn't see the need when I was sitting in a carriage with one or two people far away from me. But if it's the requirement, obviously I do it. Also, for random reasons, I am required to do a swab test once a week, so I get regular confirmation that I don't have it, which I guess makes me feel that I'm not a risk to others.

But by that logic then why would anybody follow the rules? Give people an inch and they'll take a mile, that's been the problem all the way through the pandemic. If we'd had stern guidance from the start, we'd be in a much better place. But this wishy washy non leadership is leaving gaping loopholes for people to use, the mandatory masks seems to be the first genuine rule that has come into effect.

And the more people DON'T comply, the longer it will take until we're able to start moving back to something more closely resembling a normal life. It's that simple. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens on Friday. Sainsburys have already said their staff won't enforce the rule, and I can certainly understand not wanting to put that burden onto store staff - but yes, unfortunately, if you give people an inch they'll take a mile, and this has become a country full of very, very self-absorbed people.

Because most people will follow the rules even when they know they'd get away with it if they didn't. Most people will do things because those are the right things to do, not because they're afraid of punishment. And the statistics shows that that's exactly what's happening. People are following the rules. I'd be pretty disappointed in us as a species if only the threat of punishment was effective in making people do what's right, and I'm pretty disappointed that people here seem to think all humans are that self-centred and irresponsible.

I must say, since we started requiring masks onboard, I've had next to no issue with compliance (aside from one or two people who think it's appropriate to come into the galley and remove the mask to talk to us), but I do have to mention to some people to wear them. In all honesty, I'm not sure of the effectiveness due to how many have been bunched up in pockets/on chins etc. In business class with people drinking though, the mask is kinda remaining off due to always having a drink in hand, it's more damage than good to be constantly removing and re-applying it seems.
There's some practical challenges, took a bit of time to get used to doing my PAs (quite lengthy at the moment with all the specific announcements about covid) and planning my own refreshments (gotta drink plenty water) but it is slowly becoming the new normal.

I’ve noticed more people wearing masks this week especially at the supermarket. Last week there were probably 3 of us wearing one, yesterday it was double figures.

And yet they do challenge you on entering if you're coming in pairs, giving you a lanyard if you have a reason so that you aren't harassed by staff in the store as I was before they started doing that.

I did a temp job at Sainsbury’s while the restaurant I work at was closed, and trying to enforce the “one adult per household” rule on the door wasn’t worth it. If I wasn’t getting abuse for it I’d be told “she’s my neighbour” or “we don’t know each other” only for the same people to be walking around together and carrying each other’s shopping, which obviously undermined my point while speaking to other waiting customers. I’m sure people have seen the videos of supermarket workers in the US getting abuse for trying to enforce masks so I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid that

It will be interesting to see if they get a vaccine how they prioritize who gets it after the front-line health workers. On Loose Womwn yesterday we had Janet Street Porter representing the over 70's, Kelle Bryan who is immune surpressed and BAME and Coleen Nolan who is a larger woman. So all three/four characteristics could be at threat.
I think we agree that healthcare front line/police should be first then those at most risk ( the ones who were told to shelter), other frontline workers like delivery drivers/shop staff are done in roughly that order. But where do you go then, age, gender, race, size, milder underlying conditions.
I'm nearly 50 and overweight so am I more at risk than a younger fitter BAME person who may not be able to WFH as much as me for example.
The best suggestion I heard from the Loose Women was you start with the oldest and work back after you've done the key/at risk. But if a son or daughter took their parent/parents to be immunized surely it would make sense yo do all at once.

If your life experiences have shown you that they AREN'T, you have been very, very fortunate.
