Lots of people who dislike the government have a problem with The Lancet paper I think you mean. It really is as simple as that. It’s a peer-reviewed paper in the UK’s leading medical journal, itself edited by someone quite strongly opposed to the government. It’s conclusions are hardly surprising in the case of the UK - why wouldn’t a country with a fast comprehensive vaccine programme rate well in world terms and average in West European terms ? That's everyone isn't it?? We will see at the next election but, looking at the Daily Mail comment section, this government are certainly not popular with their core supporters.

Lots of people have issues with the Lancet paper because of the methodology they used to get to the figures. A lot of the data is modelled rather than using actual reported excess death figures. It's certainly a lot more complicated than people refusing to believe it because they dislike the goverment. That's the actual truth not whatever line you're peddling.

Tesco's selling single lateral test kit now for £2 each. Had two big stands full of them by the self service tills. Didn't seem to be being snapped up despite more mask wearing in the store as the week has gone on.

I suspect most people who are likely to use the tests stocked up on free boxes over the past few weeks.
I'm currently on Day 4 of Covid and feeling very glad I'm triple jabbed, it hasn't been fun! The cough and headaches are horrendous.

As I said, lots of people had issues with the methodology not just the British results. Lots of the numbers in that paper have been pushed back on. That's the actual truth not whatever line you're peddling. I also think that's not really the point. Yes, some countries did worse than us, and some did better. Other countries made mistakes, and the nature of a novel pandemic means that some mistakes were inevitable. But the scale of mistakes, many of which were avoidable, is what we should be angry about. As a nation we were challenged by being an international hub etc, but we're supposed to have an advanced public health system, so should have done better. The problem is that funding for it has been cut and its capabilities were diminished, but we carried on as if we still had the well funded version. We had pandemic plans, but they weren't properly updated. There were reviews that showed we didn't have adequate, and in date, PPE in place etc, but the recommendations to fix that were ignored. Then there's the money wasted on dodgy procurement and the decision to accept massive fraud (from companies that may have donated to the Tory party), and the impact that's had on funding for the NHS and other services. Mistakes that impacted on the economy and cost jobs don't show up in those statistics. And that's before you consider the heart-ache of people who couldn't say good-bye to loved ones while half of Downing Street were partying, then lying about it. I take the point that some people only see the bad things that happened, and ignore any of the good bits. We did get some bits right. But playing an important part in the vaccine programme (researchers and the NHS deserve much credit here too) doesn't make it OK to write off billions of pounds of money lost in fraud.

Can't wait for the government to start trumpeting the massive drop in cases that will come next week, whilst the untested prevalence continues to hit new highs.

It's been pretty chaotic on the ground the last few weeks. More people than I've ever known to at once or in quick succession are either isolating with symptoms, isolating because someone in their household (usually children) has symptoms or has tested positive, or have tested positive themselves.
It's crazy seeing that the messaging from both the government and employers has been that we are to return to usual practices and pretend that everything is normal when I actually think in terms of brute spread of the virus it's worse than it's ever been. A colleague of mine has had to work from home the entirety of this week having been informed on Monday evening that their daughter's class is cancelled for the week due to a positive case. Luckily they're able to work from home but what are families without that option who can't afford childcare supposed to do? How can we pretend that everything is normal when something like that is always a very real possibility?

They think if enough of us pretend everything is normal then it will be normal.
I accept there would always be a point at which restrictions would lift and we couldn't wait for very low case numbers for that to be the case, but we know that schools were driving a lot of the infection and viral infections naturally decrease towards the Summer as people open windows more and do things outside.
They should have kept the mask mandate in busy places until after the Easter Break, and encouraged those who can to keep up home/hybrid working with access to LFTs for at least a month after that. The advice on using LFTs could have been adapted so people who don't really need them weren't using as many. I have a friend who does one every day as company policy before going into an office that is well spaced and has no vulnerable staff members, even when none of them have been near anyone that's had a positive test. That's excessive IMO. On the other hand there are people who are at higher risk of exposure and come into close contact with vulnerable people, who would benefit from regular testing and tests should stay available for them.

I have been testing twice a week for work purposes (frontline customer service in Salford Uni Library) since early last year. As we were able to give out boxes of tests at the different sites, I was able to get ahead with some boxes ... not loads I hasten to add, but enough to be able to carry on testing twice a week until I go to my sci fi con in early May.
When the mask mandate was dropped, most people on my commuter buses immediately stopped wearing masks, as have most of the students coming into the library. I stopped wearing one myself for a few days, and regretted it on 8th March. Although it's the milder Omicron variant, I was still shocked to see the test line appear. Via various routes of infection, we've had several weeks on the trot where someone has been working from home while they isolate for at least 5 days.
Just keeping the mask mandate would have prevented a lot of infections and their subsequent effect on staffing, services, etc... This government wants to pretend everything's alright, but it won't be for a while. I'm back to mask wearing and see no reason to stop yet.

The case numbers may drop but the hospitalisation rates and deaths are what we need to look at. Plus cases per 1,000 tests or whatever metric they use. The good journalists would soon pick up on this.
Rare day in Birmingham for Directorate meeting today. Very few wearing masks on train and no-one at meeting bar me wearing one.

If you don't do tests you have less cases. Obviously you don't in reality. You just don't know about them but that is where we are. This was something Trump always championed so no surprise we are now there ourselves.

It's a bit nieve to say producers wouldn't put out a false statement. It happens often to disguise behind the scenes drama (it's just PR spin) and covid is the perfect excuse at the moment and its very hard to question peoples health. Wouldn't be the first, companies use covid too for one reason or another. It buys you time, a couple of weeks to sort out whatever the issues are. Taron being unhappy with reviews seems a bit unlikely to me but i guess anything is possible. Based on what we know my guess would be extreme stage fright, or possible exhaustion as he went from filming a movie (and a big fitness routine) straight into the play. The one aspect that does hint at maybe behind the scenes drama is the lack of warmth/best wishes in the statement towards taron. Indeed - the COVID excuse is extremely prevalent. Surely the public realise that? It's a great cast iron get out of jail card.

It might be, but then again they reckon 1 in 13 people have COVID at the moment, so it’s totally possible that every other show genuinely has a cast member out with it.
It’s totally possible that Taron really got COVID on top of whatever else is going on in his personal life. COVID doesn’t care if you’re already struggling with something.
And it’ll get worse before it gets better, because of the transmissibility. One tube ride is enough to catch it.
☹️

Anyone who has any social conscience will still self-isolate, as the guidance suggests And as a relatively young person who currently has Covid it can and does wipe a young person out (I'm on Day 9 of feeling absolutely fatigued) so stop making inaccurate and unrealistic assumptions about it.
