Very exciting news! Surprised it's "Smash" rather than a straightforward "Bombshell" musical, but I actually think that could sell and work better. It also gives them more freedom. Either way I'm glad it sounds like an adaptation of the first season, with a Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penned score and (hopefully) not a mention of the terrible 'Hit List' subplot and musical which was introduced in the second season.
Megan Hilty also hinted at a Season 3 on her twitter last night, so I wonder if if we'll see some cross promotion if and when both go into production - and if any of the TV cast will cross over? They all seem to have a huge affection for the show still.

Season 3 could easily be them trying to do a Broadway revival of Bombshell, as a way of generating profits and capital for a new musical (which would then be season 4). That would tie in nicely with a stage adaption of Smash and a way of them exploring whether there is a viewership without having to work on a brand new musical for season 3?

This would be amazing I would totally fly over to NYC to see this! Would love to hear a large orchestra play this lush music ahh

I also think fans will just want Bombshell songs in a revival, rather than a load of new tracks, so that's a good way to please them too. Imagine a storyline where producers want to cast a now (slightly older) Ivy as Marilyn's mother in the revival and introduce an unknown newcomer to play Marilyn - her reaction would be priceless!

All I ask from the Broadway version is that Megan Hilty is Ivy, and Ivy is Marilyn by the end of the show. Well, that and a ticket obviously.

Great, because tbh i always had more interest in the show and general story than the actual musical they were making, so this suits me better than an actual Bombshell musical. I think they could incorporate some aspects of season 2. I know it's wildly unpopular but i loved season two, i loved a lot of the songs from Hit List but mainly the reason was Jeremy Jordan

Season 2 is underrated personally. S1 is "tighter" overall but S2 had a lot more going on.
A stage version has been murmured about for years, and this recent announcement doesn't really seem to have moved anything on much from the one we had years ago - we already knew the choreographer from Smash was still attached, for example. I think the only new news is a definite confirmation that this is effectively a SMASH musical rather than Bombshell.

It makes more sense though, as Smash is a property with a following and Bombshell was a show-within-a-show. This way they can probably repurpose existing scripts and storylines without having to figure out an actual script to a Marilyn Monroe Musical. The only thing that feels a little off would be how much life they expect this to have? Is it a limited time musical to ensure the cast is the same as the TV show? Will people who haven’t seen the show go and see it?

On the face of it, it sounds exciting bur in reality its not going to be what people are expecting or a true reunion/revival of the show on stage. Many of the original cast either won't do it, can't do it, or are now to old for their original roles. And the thing is with TV shows especially its the cast that really makes a show and brings it to life. Who would be ever be interested for example if Friend's came back on TV but with none of the original stars? It wouldn't be Friend's and will this really be Smash?

I guess I’m not being entirely fair - there have been many movie-to-stage adaptations that didn’t need the same cast and whilst less adapted, some TV shows have moved to stage too: who on earth would have thought Only Fools and Horses would have lasted so long on the west end? Though the less said about Corrie: The Musical the better.
I suppose there’s just this assumption Smash as its own property wouldn’t work without the original cast, whereas the cast alone couldn’t make the TV show a success anyway. It was the songs that are remembered, alongside the idea - because the plot got lost more than once too.
So it could work, but I’d argue it’s an uphill battle trying to get a flop TV show a broadway audience. So maybe it’s better off not casting the TV cast and give it a chance to work as its own thing - as if it’s just a nostalgic trip down memory lane, it’s shelf life will be fairly limited.

I would almost be more interested to see a fresh take/eyes on this story, and see what new life that could be brought into it, see if any of the characters would be played differently if they were taken down a slightly different path I know I'll mainly be there to hear the music, and as much as I'd love to see some of the original cast come back, if I wanted that, I can easily just pop in my DVDs for that! I always think that the premise of the show was strong, it just got lost a bit along the way, with changing minds at the top, so if they really focus down on the story that they wanted to tell, and how they want to tell that on stage, I hope that it could bring something interesting to the table.

Plus anyone who's a follower of Smash knows Bombshell, so I don't think we can really say someone is a fan of one and not aware of the other. Personally, I'd have thought it would be easier to construct a musical of Bombshell than a musical about the making of it..

The question is how will they put 32 hours of story plus two (or more) musicals into a stage show?
Exciting, though; I love the songs to Bombshell.

About time too, it's only taken a decade! Great news. There's too much good stuff in there to not make a proper show out of it 😁

From what I've heard it's going to be quite the different story than the show was. I can't help but wonder why they've decided to push forward with it instead of Bombshell?

From what I've heard it's going to be quite the different story than the show was. I can't help but wonder why they've decided to push forward with it instead of Bombshell? I’ve seen one article about the recent Industry Readings explaining that in this version Ivy is now the seasoned and experienced “star” cast as Marilyn in Bombshell and that Karen is her understudy/alternate. Between that and the casting of two older performers in the lead roles for the Broadway workshop, I do wonder if they’ve reworked it in the hope is to get Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee to reprise their roles when it opens properly…

Megan will be most likely taking DEATH BECOMES HER to Broadway if the Chicago tryout is successful next summer and would have to commit to at least a year if it moves (probably winter/24 or spring/25). SMASH appears to be on the fast track following two very successful readings and has a 6 week workshop in February 2024. If that goes well it is likely, pending an available house, they would be opening on Broadway before end of 2024. In short, while I would kill to see her as Ivy again, DEATH BECOMES HER will likely prevent that as it would pop up in the same season as SMASH. In terms of Katherine McPhee, good question. The role has been rewritten so not sure it would suit her limitations as an actress but ya never know....

Booked up for this but a bit disappointed in the cast. The only familiar name from the TV show was someone who played one of my least favourite characters. I can’t resist that music though.
