I'm guessing it's because Bennett wrote with the original actors in mind, or at least tweaked them when they'd been cast - Comer was the first one where I felt (particularly in the first scene) that we were watching Comer play Walters play Lesley, but that could just be because Bennett it wrote it to exploit the turn of phrase that Walters was good at. Is that why I 'heard' Walter is certain parts even though I haven't seen her do it? It was so easy to imagine how she'd do it, where she'd put the emphasis on certain lines. I didn't mind this version to be honest but having read comments I wasn't expecting much so maybe that helped. Wasn't quite sure about the accent, wasn't sure if it was just sometimes her character putting on her 'working voice' hence you sometimes had an accent and sometimes didn't. Yes, I felt exactly the same. Know Julie's work so well, that despite never having seen her original, I could hear her voice in my head as Jodie said the words

I felt the same and although I've never seen the original I can imagine her doing it in her "Cynthia Payne" voice from Personal Services or the woman in the queue in the cafe talking about prawns.

I'm probably missing something but I found A Bed In The Lentils really dull!

I'm probably missing something but I found A Bed In The Lentils really dull! I dont think it is the best monologue, some of the others are more dramatic. I do think that Lesley Manville is the only one I've seen so far to come close to the original.

Playing Sandwiches - whilst thinking I knew where this was going it still brought me up short when it did.

Playing Sandwiches - whilst thinking I knew where this was going it still brought me up short when it did. The original with David Haig will knock your socks off. Lucian Msamati is a brilliant actor but Haig really sold the emotion of it.

Yes had to wade back through thread to find out who the original was with and am now trying to imagine, have come to realise I really haven't seen these before beyond maybe an odd minute or two.

Do we think The Shrine was set in the present, or years ago?
The language, references and the character's clothes are quite dated.
Incredible performance though

Incredible performance though I put it in the same timrframe as the original monologues, the 80s but written as though it could be anywhere from 1960 onwards. I think An Ordinary Woman is the only one that explicitly has modern references to phones and technology?

I think I just expected The Shrine to be another attempt at Alan doing something contemporary, but her language and particularly her fashion was very dated. The only vaguely modern reference was the woman with tattooed hands!

Soldiering On really got me. Every story is sad but this one just seems sadder than most.

Having seen them all now, this is how I'd rate them in terms of my enjoyment and/or how well and how successful they were in freshly reinterpreting the scripts....
1) A Lady Of Letters 2) The Outside Dog 3) An Ordinary Woman 4) Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet 5) The Shrine 6) The Hand Of God 7) Soldering On 8) A Chip In The Sugar 9) Nights In The Garden Of Spain 10) Her Big Chance 11) A Bed Among The Lentils 12) Playing Sandwiches
