At 15.00 Natasha Yvette Williams sings the opening number What Are You Thirsty For? People on Broadway world forum complaining that the score is "unhummable"or all pastiche. What do they think a thirties set musical ought to sound like? And lyrically Scott and Marc seem to be doing witty and inventive stuff that makes me laugh out loud. (The rest of the video is worth a look too if you're interested in how things are written.

I swear “the songs are unmemorable” is the go-to line for every single new show, it doesn’t mean anything anymore! Sometimes it is a valid criticism, but sometimes it’s like people go into a show expecting Sondheim (and even a lot of *his* songs aren’t especially earwormy!) I wish people would come up with a better way of critiquing music. Not everyone has the same taste in songs/music genres, and people can find different tracks ‘skippable’ (my personal hot take: being ‘memorable’/catchy doesn’t necessarily make a song good. It can help make it iconic but it’s not the be all and end all for every song)

Can we ban the use of ICONIC to describe every moderately well-known song on the planet? It's getting so tedious due to it's overuse on Strictly and similar shows where it seems to be the only adjective they know.

Everything is 'iconic' these days, which surely defeats the whole purpose of the word in the first place?

I’ve seen this twice now and going again tomorrow. Personally, I am love the score and think it’s Shaiman’s best since “Hairspray”. The book is also pretty damn great with some very touching and very hilarious moments. As a whole it’s a total throwback to the golden age, with a more “modern” sensibility. I have no doubt this will cross the pond to the West End eventually.

This show isn’t just Hot, it’s Sizzling! One of the best new Broadway scores of the past 10 years and it’s just so much fun! Brilliant performances all around.
I’d predict this will be the most nominated new musical this season because the technical elements are also very impressive.
5 star traditional Broadway show. Lots of tapping too!

It's been announced that Mariah Carey has jumped on board as a co-producer for the show -
Could this be a financial/funding decision perhaps? She is worth $350 million dollars after all...
I know that Mariah is a huge Marilyn fan and has helped her estate many times, so it may just be something to do with that. She famously bought some of her personal items at an auction in the 90s to allow them to be kept with her estate and not be sold to investors.

If it looks likely that the show might have potential to open a second production on the West coast or on tour it's not unusual for more investors to get involved. Maybe Mariah's just getting in there early.

My feelings are lukewarm after seeing on Broadway!
Now I thought the cast & ensemble were great & boy did it look good (costumes, set design) but I would give it 3 stars.
It’s score seem to samey number to number, I love tap but maybe it was overused (although the chase tap scenes were great fun), it had a nice message to it but it didn’t just click to me the way it should!
I would much rather we see ‘Kimberley Akimbo’ come this way than this!

Got rush tickets for this today - our $40 tickets got us K24+26 aka the very back, right most seats of the mezzanine, which obscured the top half of the set but at least didn’t miss any of the stage. Fortunately at the interval the usher suggested we move up front due to empty seats so ended up a couple rows back and to the centre of the mezzanine which was a fantastic view - ended up being a real bargain!
As for the show, I loved it! I am a sucker for a tap number though so naturally this really worked for me. The Benny-Hill-goes-tap number in Act 2 was great!
Plenty of incredible talent on display with Christian Borle giving all tits and teeth and relishing it. The queer storyline worked as well, felt good to see representation like that portrayed by an actual queer/non-binary person, especially one so incredibly talented!
Oh and what a treat that they reworked Let’s Be Bad from Smash!

This is done very well and it's a real treat if you enjoy tap dancing, although some people near me were complaining they'd ruined it as it was nothing like the film. On paper, it has a lot of things going for it, but I'm not sure it would sell well in London.

So this shouldn't be a hugely difficult sell with the right cast

I can't get on with the cast recording as it's so bland. Very Smash and the dull bits from Hairspray.
