I was at tonight’s 2nd preview performance. A new play written by Jonathan Harvey that is both comedic and heart breaking in equal measure during the 2hr 20 min run time. As a family gathers together to celebrate a birthday, we follow the ups and downs of a family as the fantasies, lies and truths that have bound the family together are exposed and the impact they have on the different family members.
The two sisters who live together are played by Josie Lawrence and Annette Badland. Two contrasting sisters, Josie plays a sister (Sylvia)who inhabits a world of fantasy to get through each day, while Annette as the older, level headed sister (Garnet) keeps her sister happy by playing along with the fantasy world. Both ladies I thought were great and certainly by the end of the play, for me, their performances heart breaking.
The other family members we meet are Sylvia’s 2 sons and their respective partners.With these family members, Tony Maudsley who plays the eldest son and Matt Henry who plays his long term partner have some great on stage chemistry. The other couple played by Nathan McMullen as the other son and Gemma Brodrick as his girlfriend are fine.
Whilst the play for me didn’t really get going until the second scene in Act One when Tony and Matt appear, the play was a great watch. There is plenty of biting humour in the writing which underlies the more darker elements of the play. It certainly kept me entertained for the entire night.
Whilst there isn’t a house programme as such for this production, for £4 you get a combined play text and cast bio.
