Stephen Tompkinson and Jessica Johnson in this and were excellent at today’s matinee. Word perfect as they start touring again until May. Such a clever play and as relevant today as it was when it first came out. Recommended.  |

Good to know as it's years since I saw the play or film and I suddenly came over all traditional (probably as a result of a surfeit of theatrical weirdness and experimentation, eg Fairview, Scenes With Girls etc) and had a longing for something more comforting and conventional. Can't do the Guildford week of the tour but having discovered that the Rose in Kingston has started offering £10 "Secret Seats" (ie the same as the Pot Luck seats at the Bush and so on), I've booked to see it there instead.

Intrigued enough to google travel, not too difficult to get to, direct train to Penzance and then a bus.
Damn always wanted to visit, tempted if I can get a Friday / Saturday evening ticket.

That is a long way to go. You're in walking distance of Land's End.
If anyone wants to make the trip from London, it looks like the sleeper service is back running to Penzance, but only on Thursday and Friday nights. You can take your mask off in your cabin. I don't know if the theatre will offer a Friday matinee, but the times will work out quite nicely if they do.

Got my tickets for this this morning. Such a stunning theatre. I'm from Penzance so if anyone has questions about the area just shout. There is no public transport after 7pm in Porthcurno so if you are going to an evening show you need to drive or book a taxi to get home. Someone mentioned staying at Land's End. The view is pretty but there isn't much else there, unless you are excited by a Wallace and Grommit experience/ride!! The hotel is also currently under renovation. The coastal path from Land's End to the Minack is breathtaking (in good weather) but will take 2-3 hours. The nearest town with decent facilities is Penzance (new Premier Inn just opened).

It was a joy to see it this evening in Kingston. Highly recommended.
The female character didn't project her voice very well so at the beginning when her accent is still very strong I missed a few things but otherwise it was excellent.
Social distancing was very well managed.

We went to the Rose Theatre in Kingston last night and very much enjoyed the play.
There was a brief speech from the Rose's artistic director, it was the first night re-opening for the Rose and the first night for this show to pick up in the new normal with a masked audience.
Stephen Tompkinson was very good, Jessica Johnson was excellent! No problem hearing her in the fourth row of the circle. Really good chemistry between them and we laughed along.
The Covid setup itself... well now that was a bit mixed. Timed arrival, signage, drinks etc was all fine but the seats were not very well spaced out in the circle.
So within in each row, there was at least two seats between bubbles and then there was no-one sitting directly in front of a group -there were however people just one seat along in the row in front. So for a lot of people in the circle, there was someone within an arms length just to the right or left of your seat, so absolutely not 1m+ from everyone around you. When we sat down, I thought it must just be our seats and people in wrong seats but looking around, it was clear there were quite a few groups sat like this. So not ideal I think and could do with a bit of a review.

We were sitting in row B upper circle and there both my partner and I struggled to hear her sometimes, especially at the beginning when she rushes & has her still "uneducated" accent. Up in Upper Circle, even though the seating was the same as below, due to the rake the people in front and behind were further away so it did seem we were in our own social bubble. |

Visited the Rose Theatre yesterday for closing night. My first time at the theatre and they've done a great job of being Covid-19 aware. Temperature checks on arrival (I was flagged as "too cold" but that wasn't a reason to refuse admission), multiple entrances, seats roped off, two empty seats free to either side, one free in front and behind with plenty of space between rows, masks enforced, no interval etc. The seating seemed good in the Stalls, but I didn't see the Circle.
I did pay more than I would usually for a play, but had a prime view, so can't fault this.
As for the play itself (I've only seen the film before). Performed with gusto, audio fine (Jessica was quieter), you could really see the character development and vulnerability. The 90 minutes flew by.
There were some tears from the cast at the end, but no speeches. I'm sure they're hoping to continue the tour.
Less fun was the journey home, but I should have realised that getting buses and coping with the 10pm curfew on the last night before lockdown would pose a problem. So a one hour journey took about three hours. But it was worth it. I miss live in-person theatre already.

Very surprised nobody has seen this recently?
I caught in Newcastle tonight. Lots of empty seats so managed to get a bargain stalls seat.
Liked how it was straight through 90 minutes no interval and people just sat and watched and enjoyed with bad audience behaviour to a minimums (maybe because the average age was much higher than shows I have seen recently).
Stephen was fantastic. I am not sure of the lead ladies name (no cast list, no programmes) but the accent could do with a bit of work. Fantastic performances though. Very enjoyable. Just a shame we weren't treated to THAT song. I suppose for copywrite reasons but a shame.

I volunteered for it a few weeks back in Northampton (end of July, I think). It was good, Stephen Tomkinson and Jessica Johnson both very watchable. Also no interval which makes the piece feel much sharper and prevents it from dragging. Worth a watch.
