I think she might have made her point better and still answered the question without going on and on. I actually thought Glenn Close had more of an attitude, especially calling out the surgeon acquaintance so scornfully. I sure hope he never sees this interview!

There is a lot of controversy over Boseman not winning. I think the Oscars were wrong to hold the award back until the end and make everyone think he would win.

Boseman should have won. From all I've read, Hopkins gave an excellent performance, but he has won before and there will never be another opportunity to honour Boseman.
Agree the structure was very strange - Best Picture should have been last, and Best Director was very early in the evening.

Agree the structure was very strange - Best Picture should have been last, and Best Director was very early in the evening. But isn't the fact that Boseman was amongst the very select group of nominated actors honouring him? I don't know the actual criteria they use to determine who gave the best performance.. But it's so tricky. Automatically give it to Boseman and they run the risk of devaluing the award (and I don't mean Boseman's performance wasn't terrific, it was. But all the performances were, that's why they ere nominated). Don't give it to Boseman and they're accused of bias, or being unfair. It's an impossible situation. Maybe Boseman should be honoured by naming a new award or category after him?

Perhaps they could’ve found another way to honour Boseman, maybe create a new award or something. Saying that, without intending to sound heartless, Boseman (whilst a wonderful actor and a very sad loss), probably delivered one of the worst (but still great) performances out of all the nominees. Speaking just from a performance standpoint, I think Yeun, Ahmed, and Hopkins all deserved the award more.

Any other year I'd have given the award to Riz Ahmed. The range of emotions he plays through the film, the terror in his eyes, is astonishing.

The death of Boseman is a tragedy for his family and a loss to cinema. But his contribution to film is not so significant as to merit a (new) Oscar in his name.
People get swept up in the emotion of his passing and expectations are raised.

I think it would be unfair for people to direct any anger towards Hopkins, although apparently it's already happening on social media. He clearly didn't expect to win, and was very gracious in his thank you video this morning.

I was hoping Oliva Colman would win again, just cos I think she's fantastic! I was also hoping Husavik would win best original song cos I just love it! The performance last night by Molly Sanden, live from Husavik with all the school children in their lopapeysas and the northern lights shining was just incredible!

Right decision for me on Actor - Hopkins in a career-best performance.
I echo what others say about Boseman - he's a good actor, but his contribution to film in the wider sense is not big enough for a new award in his memory. I take nothing away from his performance (which lots have enjoyed) but I'm pleased that the voters were able to separate the tragedy and vote based on performance.
(I'm not trying to start anything with that...)

Of the nominees for best actor I've only seen Boseman and Ahmed and I thought Ahmed gave the superior performance. However, based on the trailer and subject matter and what I know of Anthony Hopkins, I can easily imagine he'd pull of an incredible performance worthy of the win.
I saw a suggestion that Hopkins won due to a vote split, but my understanding is that the Oscars use a preferential voting system, so that can't be the case.
Emotion does play a role in how people vote, but the Oscar voters seem to know who they like, and it's often people who have won or been nominated before. It was wrong for those organising the Oscars ceremony to leave that category until the end, and I expect the media thought a Boseman win would make a better story and need to take responsibility for hyping that version of events, but actual Oscar voters will have their own views.
As it is, Hopkins is the oldest ever winner of a Best Actor Oscar. In fact, seeing older actors pick up acting awards, especially the women, was a sign of progress in writing interesting parts for older actors IMO.

I saw someone say on social media that this year’s ‘secret Oscar ballot’ stories had a bit of a theme of ‘I know Chadwick Boseman is going to win; I am voting for Hopkins because I thought he was really the best but Boseman has it sewn up so it doesn’t matter anyway’’.
Happens that way sometimes.
Clearly the producers thought they’d get to end on an emotional tribute to Chadwick Boseman when he won which is why they changed the order of the awards around.

Watched The Father last night. Was quite different to the stage show and a different performance by Hopkins to Pryce in Height of the Storm. Equally as good and used the wonderful music of Ludovico Einaudi

Happens that way sometimes. Clearly the producers thought they’d get to end on an emotional tribute to Chadwick Boseman when he won which is why they changed the order of the awards around. I think they might have been talking about one of those anonymous voter insights that have become popular. I read one where someone said they expected Boseman to win, but thought Hopkins was better, so were voting for him. The Oscars don't release the positions or votes, so there's no point in giving a consolation vote to someone unless you want them to win. There are lots of things where I might predict someone will win something, whilst not wanting that outcome. It seems to me that Boseman fans are trying to rationalise his loss when it was them that were were so certain it was in the bag. It's incredible to me that the organisers would be so reckless to assume they could predict the outcome, to the point of not caring that the early favourite for the win, and assumed second favourite would be tucked up in bed. If you get a chance to read them, they are simultaneously fascinating and depressing. There are no names attached, but it amazes me that voters are happy to admit to not watching all of the nominated films, or voting for a film because they like someone that's involved. There's become an obsession with judging the success of the show by the live audience figures. The Oscars will remain relevant so long as studios include the line "with Academy Award winner/nominee" on their posters and DVDs. People who can't be bothered watching the whole show will still watch clips online and the results fill newspapers, magazines and the rolling news. It's not an event that exists in order to get ratings for whichever tv network it airs on.

Many critics/film historians who are not affiliated with the Oscars generally tend to agree that the Oscars is really a reflection of how Hollywood wants to be seen in that moment, rather than what it actually is. They're very zeitgeist-y in a sense.
Performances aside, I expected Boseman to win because it was the year of the Black Lives Matter movement, so his win would have been very "of the moment". I know that that's cynical, but there are many interesting articles/documentaries/videos on WHY best Actor/Actress/Movie takes the prize, and performance is only one piece of a bigger picture.

It's not an event that exists in order to get ratings for whichever tv network it airs on. Except it is! The payment they get from the network for airing it is the American Academy’s main source of income. They network pays a lot of the rights because of the advertising revenue it generates. Low ratings means the advertising revenue goes down which means the rights are worth a lot less which means the Academy has to find other funding sources... (Why does the multi billion dollar Hollywood film industry rely on TV money for its official industry body, I hear you cry? What a good question....)

Fair enough. I assumed that the members and film studios funded the Academy as they are the ones who benefit from it and tv revenue would cover the costs of the show itself. Though I dare say that would lead to people claiming that the big studios are buying influence. As if they don't anyway.
There are ways to make money from social media, but adverts on YouTube clips feels more grubby than on tv, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
I still say that actual ratings aren't the key sign of success or value of the awards for the industry overall. Oscars are a massive boost to any film.
The industry as a whole makes so much money from the ceremony. Whether it's all of the networks and radio shows talking about the red carpet, and moreso the magazines. That's the show itself - I'm constantly shocked when I read about the money spent promoting a film or actor for the awards. Lots of people make money from it.
