My youth theatre have emailed and said we will have our show fees fully refunded if the Fringe is cancelled. It'll be a massive shame if it does get cancelled, but it is probably the most sensible decision.

The decision will most probably not be theirs to make. A lot will happen between now and August. But given people's finances there isn't a lot of time to make huge decisions like Fringe accommodation, not to mention people are saving every penny at the moment so any decision about cancelling has to happen ASAP.

Amongst all the uncertainties I notice that one of my favourites of last year, Unfortunate by Fat Rascal, has been announced again for this year, this time playing in the Udderbelly which is a big step up from the uni lecture hall they were in last year.

I was going to go this year for the first time in decades. Probably whistle for it now. But at some point life will have to resume a semblance of normality, even if there are new norms, or we will go back to the Dark Ages.

This is amazing! Superb tearing apart of the fringe. There's also now a spoof Twitter account! twitter.com/efdringe

I love the Fringe but the way they are going on and dismissing the crisis is frankly disgusting. Profit before people. How do they honestly think they will put it on? Artists can't create shows, to which there will be no audience to show them anyway. It's mind boggling. Now the Olympics have been postponed I would be surprised if the Fringe wasn't cancelled by the end of the week.

I can't really imagine quite what they will say in this Friday's update if it isn't "it's cancelled".

Being a technophobe I have no idea how possible this would be but I wonder if there's any way the Fringe could offer something like the Theatre Cafe concerts being streamed. I know it wouldn't work for all shows but perhaps some of them could do something along those lines with people buying a daily pass/show pass/whatever works so there's something out there for all those performers already preparing for it. As I say, no idea if it could be done but surely worth a thought

What the hell do the Edinburgh Fringe think they're playing at? No statement in 6 days, lots of artists being pestered for payment as deadlines approach and accomodation refusing to refund as 'it's still going ahead'

Shona McCarthy's weekly update has just been published. It sounds like cancellation is imminent.

From the EN this morning, set to be cancelled but leaving themselves some wriggle room to host a small set of shows if restrictions are lifted.
All planning for the staging of what has become the world’s biggest arts festival is expected to be officially suspended tomorrow and refunds offered to people who have bought tickets for the hundreds of shows already on sale.
It is understood the city’s other signature events that are normally staged in August, including the International Festival, the Tattoo and the book festival are also preparing to call them off after crisis talks in recent weeks.

Finally! I adore the Fringe and the idea of not going makes me incredibly sad but absolutely the right desicion. The financial impact on Scotland without the thousands of tourists is going to be inconceivable.

Sounds like the plan is to officially put all planning on hold and refund tickets purchased but with the likes of Pleasance, Underbelly, Assembly and Gilded Balloon, perhaps independently rather than under the Fringe banner, to still have the option to pull a line-up together at short notice if circumstances allow them to much nearer the time. I guess that would be a very limited offering and most likely wouldn't happen at all but it might serve as a way of keeping the highest profile venues on-side and on-message regarding cancellation. I'm gutted not to have the Fringe to look forward to this summer but it's clearly the right decision and the only realistic option. Apart from having umpteen attempts at Coronavirus the Musical to endure next year, it should be one hell of an event and explosion of creativity in 2021! 16 and a bit months and counting.

If there's one consolation, it;s that I am saving up to go all out on 2021 and visit for the whole three weeks. It'll be expensive but 1 there's time to save up and 2 after this going to see shows and comedy will be top of my list of things to do

Oh well. Just cancelled my accommodation booking before I forget about it!
Definitely going to try to get up to Edinburgh at some point this year but I can be more flexible on timings if there is no Fringe rather than picking an expensive bank holiday weekend.

Well I bought my tickets direct from Monkey Barrel Comedy so I assume I'll be contacted soon. My plan is to donate the ticket money directly to the respective comedians if I can, I mean as far as I'm concerned the money is spent and this way they get all of it rather than whatever cut they would have had from ticket sales, comedians need a lot more support than some other artists given how stand up and comedy in general is ignored by arts funding, and so there is absolutely zero income for many.

I adore the Fringe. But I really don't have a lot of sympathy for an organisation that forces comics and artists into dire financial straits and huge amounts of debt every year just to put on their show, never mind the advertising costs etc. If one positive thing can come if this, the power and control gets transferred to the artists when it comes to putting on shows that won't bankrupt them or their audiences!
