It's absolutely insane that they made a trilogy of films without one person being in control of the over-arching plot, instead with a guy allowed to do whatever he wanted with the middle film, seemingly regardless of what was going to happen in the final film.
And I haven't seen this one but it sounds like they basically invalidate the ending of the original trilogy i.e. the only trilogy that actually works. Wow. Mind-boggling incompetence with billions of dollars in play.

I adore Star Wars. But a great thing about being innocent like Mark, you can watch them in the proper linear sequence, which is a awesome thing to do. BTW. I generally hate sci-fi. I've been told I should watch 4/5/6 before 1/2/3. Is that right Basically, yes. 4/5/6 is the main story 1/2/3 is how we got to the main story 7/8/9 is what happened after the main story I’ve just sat and watched all 11 Star Wars movies, again, in order and anyone wanting to enter into this world would be foolish to watch it unfold in a linear way for the first time. I’d suggest: Rogue One Episode IV Episode V Episode VI Episode I Episode II Episode III Solo Episode VII Episode VIII Episode IX Some might disagree with Rogue One first, but it’s probably the best modern Star Wars movie and is a direct prequel to Episode IV, leading you into the main story nicely. When you watch 1/2/3 know things will get better and then enjoy the newer movies.

Definitely the order they were made, so 4-6 first. 5 obviously has one of the most famous twists in movie history and plays out into 6. I'd agree Rogue One is the best of the modern films, but the problem with placing that first is that Jimmy Smits has a small but pretty significant role near the end and that would be lost on first viewing.

I don't understand how ix is a good film by any standard and I really wanted it to be. There's something truly heartbreaking about an opening night crowd laughing in unison at what was clearly meant to be a touching moment, so much of just doesn't work on any level. Adam Driver was good despite having literally no dialogue for half the film. It was apparently scripted by the same writer as Batman vs Superman. That guy must have some serious dirt on someone cos there must be better writers out there.. And just watch them in the order they were released

I still say watch it in sequential order, but do agree the first 3 are the best, with Empire Strikes Back Being the best and roque 1 is the best of the new films, which is basically what everyone on here are saying. Least if you watch them is sequence you have the best to come.
On a side note American films are quite notorious at not having American actors as the villains, apart from Adam Driver who is marvellous in this, it proves the point near perfect I this?

Driver the best thing in this by a country mile. I’m sure his bank balance doesn’t regret getting involved but I bet his soul does!

Saw it, mostly enjoyed it. While it wasn't as bad as what the critics were making it out to be, the Carrie Fisher bits were awkwardly placed and I felt Rey was massively OP, and it kinda annoyed me. Echoing what pretty much everybody else was saying, Driver was awesome in this and carried almost the entire film for me. John Boyega was wasted, he had an interesting arc in Force Awakens but then he just faded into the background for the rest of the story.
{Spoiler - click to view} My opinion of course but they should've let Rey die at the end, since she fulfilled her destiny or whatever and got the job done, and let Kylo live. Kylo was way more interesting than her, plus Driver is a way better actor, but I guess that's why he had to die so as to not overshadow the less talented ones... Also I was talking to my nephew in the cinema saying, "I won't say what it is, but I've already seen a spoiler about Rey--" to which I got immediately shushed by a man in the row in front, who turned to me and put a finger to his lips. I SAID I WASN'T GOING TO SAY ANYTHING, DON'T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A TWIST.

I hated the 3D aspect of this. If you compared this new one to the original 3, then sure you are going to be disappointed, but if you don’t then it is alright and nothing special. However every Star Wars always follows the same theme, where the good guys are on the point of losing, {Spoiler - click to view} then pull it back from the brink in the last scene

As someone who doesn’t “get” Star Wars and has only seen the most recent 3 ( including this one) I enjoyed it, but God it’s long isn’t it? This could have had 30 mins shaved off it as a minimum and it would have been better for it. Seriously is the age of the 90 minute film now lost forever? The second instalment of “It” was an hour too long and it totally killed it. More self indulgent directors who don’t know when to reign in their nonsense 😑

I am by no means a STAR WARS fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed this, and was totally caught up in its adventure and emotion. I welled up numerous times and the 2 and a half hours flew by!

I've no idea who those people you mention are - my point was that if you needed to read a comic to understand the plot of a film then that's awful writing by the film. Its like me needing to have read Elliot to understand CATS. Major plot points should never be in secondary media, its basic stuff. But of course you don’t need to read a comic to understand the plot of the film, the comic has no bearing on the plot of the film and can be ignored. Just like the cameos. The idea that Star Wars even has ‘canon’ is kind of silly. The spin-off media is made up as it goes along by various people. The films are made up as they go along by various people. It’s all just stories being made up - sometimes the stories even got changed after the films were released! (Who shot first? What film does Jabba the Hutt first appear in?) It’s not some carefully constructed universe that was mapped out in advance and is sacrosanct. Not even the creator treated it that way. It’s pulp entertainment. So: Poe and Finn can definitely be a couple, even though we don’t see them get in on. They are banging each other on the Millennium Falcon. Rey and Kylo Ren can be related via midi-chlorian conception if you want, and totally unrelated if you think midi-chlorian virgin births are rubbish. Han shot first, etc etc.

A couple of people have expressed the opinion that, if you see one of the re-booted, whatever, then see 'Rogue One'. I tried, I really did, went back to it three times and eventually got about 2/3 through. It's a predictable, infantile nonsense. It is. I'd rather wade through a Victorian sewer after a flash flood.
Maybe it's me. Maybe I should be able to find a place for this as well as all the wonderful writing and live creativity we can experience in this town. I don't think I can though.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t particularly like Rogue One. It lacks the charm of Star Wars for me.
Basically Star Wars is a fantasy adventure story featuring wizards, a princess, comic side-kicks, a long-lost Prince and sword fighting disguised by a sci-fi setting and with WWII-style fighter plane battles so that boys won’t think that it’s too girly to watch.
Rogue One sets itself up as a serious war story, not a fantasy adventure; it’s set in the same ‘universe’ but it doesn’t have the same tone or as much fun as the main saga.

I really love this perspective. I’ve just started my five year old watching them and this will help me. She loves Princess Leia and ‘light-savers’ (light-sabre ‘makes no sense mummy.’)

Oh that was long and not just because a family with little kids sat behind me and alternated between talking and kicking my seat the whole way through.
I was rather lost at times and thought surely it should have ended several times. I have watched 7 and 8 but can't remember a whole lot. These seem to lack the charm of the originals, they're a bit, no pun intended, Poe faced.
Now I think the original plan was quite different for the plot but Carrie Fisher's death changed that? Disappointing. I want to like Rey but didn't really care, Kalo Ren being the more interesting character. Spent too much time thinking well how does she keep that white outfit so clean?!
Didn't make a lot of sense even allowing for it being fantasy.
I've enjoyed the spin off two films more than the trilogy.

Carrie Fisher dying I think did change the plan for the movie, although apparently the footage they used should have done more or less the same job. My guess is: Leia was supposed to finish training Rey as we’re told in the movie, but based on the deaths of the Luke and Han I suspect Leia - a trained Jedi - would have felt it was her responsibility to face Palpatine and he would have killed her, forcing Ben back to the light? As much as I’ve enjoyed the new movies I do wish they had actually plotted all three at the same time and not made it all up as they went along.

I didn't dislike it and the speed of the action kept me entertained.
As one of the few who liked the last one I was annoyed by JJ Abrams trying to "repair" the story and the constant fan-service. Either Disney should have plotted the whole trilogy in advance or JJ Abrams should have stayed and directed all three instead of leaving it to someone else and then returning and trying to bend the last film into his originally intended direction.
When I read the opening crawl I thought I might have missed several entries and at that point gave up hope to get a coherent story.
