It's actually the play, not the musical version?

It's actually the play, not the musical version? Oh you're right it is. My mistake! Please move mods.

I was so looking forward to this but it's got to improve massively from tonight's preview to be anything like worth seeing. I don't know if it's Callow's translation that is partly at fault but many of the lines fell flat and it just wasn't funny. Here too the actors were at fault - it all felt a bit am-dram and the farcical scenes set up in Act 2 failed to register and were frankly tedious. Also, unlike the musical, the whole thing lacked heart and I couldn't give a toss about any of the characters.

Any one else seen this? I'm just wondering if it has improved after the previews (although the reviews were mainly negative.)

I saw it this week and didn't think it was awful, but it didn't really work. The characters are extremely broad and hence it's difficult to empathise with them. The son, who is always a problematic character, just comes across as cruel here and it's difficult to believe that there was ever a relationship between him and Alban. The closing farcical scenes are not well directed and a few times I lost track of exactly what was supposed to be happening. I'm glad I saw it as a curio, but I'd find it difficult to recommend anyone take the trip unless they're curious about how it works as a play.

I saw the matinee today as I was interested to see how it compared to the musical. Averagely middle of the road for me, in no way awful but not amazing either. Some good lines and laughs though. Also only 2 hours including interval so a good choice for anyone worrying about getting transport home. I've seen much worse!
