At long last the mother of all French spectacles returns to Paris: Starmania with music by Michel Berger and lyrics by Luc Plamondon has been announced for a run at Seine Musicale in Paris from October 2020 to January 2021 before embarking on a tour around France.
Starmania was first published as a double album in 1978, clearly inspired by English-language rock operas like Jesus Christ Superstar and The Who's Tommy, and was a sensation when it first opened in Paris 1979 with France Gall and Daniel Balavoine. It was also seen in Quebec and had a bunch of revivals on either side of the Atlantic, before it became quiet around it as new shows like Notre Dame de Paris took center stage. A "40th anniversary revival" had been announced first for 2018 and then for 2019 but looks like it took them longer to get the money together.
As I've only ever seen a mediocre of it in German, I'm super excited to finally get to hear the French original and see it in a typical big "spectacle" production. They've announced a completely new version, so I'm curious what it will look like and if they will find a new generation of singers that will find subsequent fame as well.
Anyway, just thought I'd let you know, as Paris is only a quick train ride away
PS: Some might remember the 1992 English Studio Cast Recording called "Tycoon" (with English lyrics by Tim Rice) that was meant to raise interest in a London production, which never happened.
