I struggled to come up with answers for a lot of the actor awards. Best Actress in a play was difficult to decide between a few though. I was going to put Juliet Stevenson but I figured she'd probably get a lot of support. I couldn't decide if Sharon D Clarke should count under this or supporting so I put her for supporting. Maggie Smith was another contender but ultimately I put Marieke Heebink because her performance was incredible and I figure everyone will maybe have forgotten about her by now. Best actor I decided on Tobias Menzies. I was struggling to come up with many contenders honestly. Supporting actor I put K Todd Freeman in Downstate. You might argue he was a bit more of a main character rather than supporting (though it was kind of an ensemble really) but I couldn't come up with anyone else and his performance was memorable and I wanted to award him. I put Jenna Russell for best actress in a musical as she was incredible and Gemma Sutton for best supporting but to be honest that was mostly because no one else really popped into my head. For best actor in a musical I put Ricardo Alfonso and supporting Rob Houchen. New play was The Doctor. Revival was Death of a Salesman. Best Musical was Preludes (also best off-West End which I struggled to decide, there were a lot of good ones), controversial I know. Revival of a musical I went with Blues in the Night (another hard pick but decided against Jesus Christ Superstar or Follies as they're revivals of revivals).

A lot of brill stuff out there but in my long theatre going experience I haven’t seen much better than Maggie Smith’s performance in A German Life.

I didn't vote on everything either because it's seen nothing/no-one in the list or the thing that I had seen that was nominated I didn't think deserved to be but I'm pretty happy with the best actor and actress in a play nominations (I've not seen Betrayal so can't speak on those ones specifically) but that was all that stood out as totally correct to me.

Having received the email from Waitress this tweet made me laugh a lot! 😂 I’m a little surprised both CHF and Sheridan Smith didn’t get nominated, because they have have a big fan base and are WOS awards regulars!

Andrew Scott got my vote for best actor! He was so so good in Present Laughter 😍

Can anyone explain why Cassidy Janson is considered a Supporting Actress for & Juliet, but Oliver Thompsett is considered in Best Actor in a Musical?

Can anyone explain why Cassidy Janson is considered a Supporting Actress for & Juliet, but Oliver Thompsett is considered in Best Actor in a Musical? I guess because Miriam is clearly the “lead” When comparing Romeo and Shakespeare, Shakespeare is more of the “lead”

Some of the acting categories are a bit skewed. Like I would have thought David Hunter should be supporting actor for Dr P. And yeah, same with Oliver Tompsett also!

These whole awards are a sham and proof why the public shouldn't have them. Joe Sugg as best supporting actor? Do me a favour.
Am surprised CHF didn't get a nom tho...

The WhatsOnStage Awards are a farce! It's not based on talent and skill, it's based on who can get the most people to vote for them. Stupid, pointless.

How is it a sham? Everyone knows exactly what it is. It's the same with all awards ceremonies. There's not a single one of them that is an objective evaluation of what is the best; they're either popularity contests, or who-made-the-biggest-donation contests, or who's-mates-with-the-committee contests, or something else. They are what they are: a way of promoting their industry to the public.
(I wonder what happened to the "worst employee" category.)

And sure there’s some noms that will always sneak in that you go wtf and can argue aren’t deserved (like Joe Sugg and Jason Donovan 😬) (although I was pleasantly surprised by Joe’s performance tbf) but then, like Matthew says, the awards voted for by a small panel of “experts” are just as likely to choose shows or actors based on name or connections, rather than actual performance or quality. I mean, Anne Marie Duff won best actress in a musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, and you can’t tell me that hers was the best musical performance of the year! But she’s acting royalty so .....

Being fair to Anne Marie Duff, she is a terrible singer but holy hell she acted the PANTS off of Charity, so I don't fully object to that...
I'm just bored of the What's on Stage awards saying celebrities are the best we have to offer. Joe Sugg/KMP/Jason Donovan just as a starter, but both Tom Huddleston and Matt Smith (who are super actorS) didn't give that good performances...
🤷🏻♂️

I’ve had a very bad year seeing things/living life so I was feeling nihilistic as f😘😘k when I voted Only Fools and Horses in every possible category
and the rest trying to anagram to f🤨🤨k my name this afternoon.

Agree with others that there will never be a “fair” way to please everyone with nominations and winners. It’s a good way of recognising theatre and since WOS/ Oliviers/ Evening Standard awards seem to have different outcomes then it spreads the awards around a bit. If it gets people talking/ interesting in seeing more shows then it’s all good.
Personally I’m pleased to see Present Laughter get so many nominations and Matthew Bourne for choreography.

I haven’t seen Mame so can’t comment on Tracie Bennett’s performance but I have zero issue with Miriam, Kat, Lucie and Zizi as the other best actress nominees in the category. All deserved as far as I’m concerned. In fact I think most of the lead acting nominations for both plays and musicals are strong. I think it tends to be the supporting roles where rogue ones sneak in (probably because you get more stunt casting, like Jason and Joe).

How about we just ditch all the awards competitions? For me, there are all just brown nosing and schmooze fests. I can't stand them tbh, especially when the wrong people win.

FWIW Sam Tutty, Katharine McPhee, Miriam-Teak Lee, Wendell Pierce and Juliet Stevenson gave my favorite leading performances of the year in their respective shows, and they’ve all been nominated, so I can’t complain! 🙌 (i also forgot to vote so I have others to thank for that!)

It’s just a way of harvesting people’s email addresses if you ask me.
Having said that they’ve already got mine so I’ve voted fr all of the &Juliet noms 😌

I def haven’t ticked the box though 😆 It’s actually interesting how many noms & Juliet got compared to DEH in the categories not voted for by the public (like lighting and sound). Not sure who votes for those but I wonder if it’s gonna be a bit of a pre-custom for the Oliviers

Blimey they are going upmarket. Guess they wont have the same host as last year then as they wouldn't be able to broadcast any of it.
