To be fair, the majority of wheelchair users are not paralysed/amputees. Many people who legitimately need and use a wheelchair are capable of standing at least briefly or taking a few steps, and there’s a lot of body policing over it. There was a thread earlier this year where posters assumed an actor was able-bodied just because he stood for the curtain call but the actor actually had cerebral palsy.
But you do make a fair point, if an actor stands from a wheelchair it’s more likely it is an able-bodied actor using a prop, and my heart sinks at that too.

If the National were going to do Richard III again they'd want a big name actor. The three actors I've seen do it in London are Anton Lesser, Ian McKellen and Kevin Spacey. I'd be keen to see Michael Sheen, Andrew Scott, Ben Whishaw in the role...

I've been a bit underwhelmed in the recent past by some of the seasons but there are 5 shows I would love to see next year: The Visit Jack Absolute Flies Again The Welkin Manor All of Us Strong casts, a lot of new writing. That’s my list too! I’m pleased with thiis announcement and this will probably be the most I’ve ever had booked for the Nash at once.

Either Jack Absolute is selling very well to members or they are holding a lot of seats back - most of the best seats in the stalls already gone by the time I got to the head of the queue this morning for several dates early in the run.

When the Donmar used to be very popular when Michael Grandage was there things used to sell out almost instantly, even for members, and at the shows I always used to look at who was occupying the seats that had already been "sold" when I had booked, and they were often people you couldn't even imagine sitting at computers waiting for 10:00 to tick over. I concluded there was all sorts going on behind the scenes over ticket allocation and membership schemes and sponsors tickets and agents tickets. The Almeida is a theatre where consistently over recent years I've got much better situated full-price tickets on public booking rather than members booking - why let members have the best seats when they'll buy the less good ones ?

Yes, the Littleton and the Olivier both have a rather large swathe (cube shaped) block of central stalls seating held off for every show for board and corporate types. You'll notice the unsold ones tend to come back the week of a show. Theatremonkey might know the exact amount, but it's very obvious the holds in these two auditoriums when you go on to book. The question, as you rightly ask, is why should we have to be pushed back or to the sides for these people? It's not like whatever activities their providing for the National are bringing down the ticket or food prices there for everyone.

Busier than expected this morning, managed to pick up cheap seats for Jack Absolute and Manor but as @n1david said there weren’t that many available.

Having managed to actually get on the NT booking this morning almost on time (not an easy call in my job), I managed to pick up a cheapo for Manor, but nothing at all for Jack Absolute. Infact I can't actually remember when I last had one of those at the Olivier; it was the way I managed to take a punt on a lot of things at the National but now it's dead certs only (and that's not so obvious anymore!) The priority membership seems less and less worth it these days.

Yes, it feels like ages since I got front row cheapies for anything in the Olivier or the Lyttelton whereas I always used to in the 90s and 2000s, though often on the second booking period of a show. And I'm a priority member these days rather than the next level down.

I'm sure the NT hold seats back. I booked seats for My Fair Lady for an office outing. The first shows were cancelled, so we were given new seats. The NT must have had empty seats to be able to accommodate a large group. Lots of booking problems this morning, got timed out in the end. Phoned the box office and a really helpful real person was able to offer cheap seats for Jack Absolute and Manor. Were these seats held back? before I was timed out cheap seats for Jack Absolute were really thin on the ground.

I also agree that it gets harder every time to get the cheap front seats in the Lyttleton and, especially, the Olivier. I do begin to wonder if it's worth the £80 a year. However, struck lucky and got a Saturday matinee ticket for £15 for both Manor and Jack Absolute, both in row B. I think the trick is to use multiple devices - I used Windows laptop, iPad and MacBook. The latter won, only 500 in the queue, whereas with Windows I was 2000.

Someone I know of who's absolutely obsessed with Mr B Daniels of Manor (that I'm keen to get down and see but not being a member is very unfortunate so here's hoping for day seats or something?) has actually gone so far as to fork out £100 for a membership (that they will never ever use) to get a ticket and even then only managed to get row S.
FYI they live in the US and have never been to London before so... Yeah.

Managed to secure a £15 stalls front row preview ticket for Manor after battling the NT IT system this morning. Seems the NT IT system had a few gremlins lurking around during the purchase of the ticket. Thankfully managed to get it sorted after a couple of attempts.

Managed to secure a £15 stalls front row preview ticket for Manor after battling the NT IT system this morning. Seems the NT IT system had a few gremlins lurking around during the purchase of the ticket. Thankfully managed to get it sorted after a couple of attempts. I was stuck in a course this morning but managed to sneak in a run at getting £15 seats for the 4 main shows. Drew somewhere in double digits and was in after 2 minutes. Navigated around the site no problem, good seats for cheap in my basket for everything I wanted to see (tactically choosing later dates in the runs generally because they get snapped up last). Got to the checkout, put in my card details and got a big error message. Tried again, payment declined. Tried a different card, error. Tried again, payment declined. I noticed my credit card was showing a hold for the amount so I thought maybe it had worked and I just had to wait for the system to figure itself out. After a few hours I figured that hadn't happened and I had lost the seats. I sent an email to the box office because I couldn't leave this course to phone them, but they ended up phoning me after an hour or two so I made my excuses and took the call. The lady said that the booking had "failed" and asked what it was I was looking to get. I said to be honest I was after the cheap front row seats for all the shows, and I'm guessing they've all gone now so I'm a bit stuck. She obviously (very kindly) allowed me to dip into the 'not for sale' section over the phone and gave me the seat brackets I wanted for all the dates I wanted. I paid over the phone and got a confirmation email straight away. So I ended up fairly happy with the whole experience. Being one of the first few onto the site today I can confirm that for things like Jack Absolute, there was probably about a dozen front £15 seats for each performance, a significant amount therefore already sold or being held back. It confirms for me that they are putting very few of them on sale for (lower tier at least) members, but they are putting some on. Bearing in mind it's those seats that make the membership worth having for budget-conscious characters like me it only ends up working if you're lucky in the queue draw.

Am I right in thinking that during his tenure Norris has directed far fewer plays than Hytner did over a similar period of time? Some might say that's a good thing, and I might agree with them but for his last effort, Small Island, which was outstanding. However, that's the only decent thing he's done since running the gaff.

As a £15-£20 customer, I'm barely in the room again. Like The Visit, it's the back most seats (Advance membership). I saw about 3-4 months ago the NT were advertising for a data analyst and wonder if that has impacted recently.

It was easier for Hytner though because he has a much bigger range as a director than Norris, he can direct comedies and Shakespeare for example, and classic revivals, and musicals, and Norris can’t direct any of those genres, he can only direct new plays where he has the author in rehearsals with him - Hytner can do that too of course.

Managed to get preview tickets for JAFA, as no one is calling it - wonder if there will be an orangey bit in the interval?
