Bit underwhelmed this week. It didn't quite rise to the occasion. And a twist is not a plait... Agree. Loved the soda bread signature though and some lovely ideas. But I loathed that type of bagel in the technical because of all the food colouring and not the multi-flavours there should be: really a case of style over substance.

Although I think their did need to be something rainbow-y due to them going up in the windows. But yes, a lot more could have been done with bagels than adding food colouring...

Brownies? Simple, right? What the chocolate chunk did they think they were doing? Notable that none of the female contestants have been seriously in the running for star baker so far this series. Peter and Mark L seem to know their limitations and turn out consistent if unexceptional bakes. Nobody is really coming up with showstoppers that impress so far.

They don't have the time between filming to perfect their work.
But how the hell can you get on Bake Off and not be able to make a decent Brownie....
What a mess

I've not seen a single bake with the "wow" factor so far. I think this series is the weakest so far for talent. Maybe all the best bakers in the country have already been in the programme.

A potential winner departed last night I've only watched last night's show so far this year, but if she was a potential winner then the show is in big trouble as she was absolutely dreadful!

I think we’re underestimating the difficulties they’ve faced making this series. I’m not sure we can expect it to reach quite the same heights. At least it has still delivered on it’s annual fit posh one in Lottie.

Or these were the group that could commit to the filming schedule and living in the bubble. I love that the signatures are back to being things people do bake at home and not obscure things no ones knows. But at the same time they highlight the lack of finesse from the group.

The lack of kitchen time really is showing now
Choux should not have defeated so many of them.
And nowhere is the world of patisserie does anyone make a pastry cage to go over a tart.
The result was inevitable

And as a cornish man the pasty crimping was pretty appalling. Why didn't anyone just make a traditional meat, potato and turnip filling.

Most cages were really well executed though, some fine bakes there

I was thinking that, even a small twist on the tried and tested My grandmother was from Cornwall and some of those 'improvements' were just bizarre. Using puff pastry? Putting sauces in them? I thought maybe Marc would do a take on a stargazy pie with his fish pasty, which would have been fun to see and would have doubled down on the 'Cornish classic' component. I was also sort of hoping someone would do what's rumored to be the 'original' pasty... sweet at one end and savory at the other. Yes, I think it sounds disgusting, but at least it would have been a pasty instead of a samosa.

The fish pasty was an abomination, neither fish nor rice belong in a pasty. I was not a fan of that round at all.
And agree the eclairs didn’t stand a chance in that time frame, I can’t imagine that they hadn’t all practised choux before filming, it comes up so frequently.
Still I am enjoying the weekly escape, nice to have something different to complain about and Pru’s necklaces are always so cheerful.

They were originally made for tin miners to take down the mine to eat and the crust was intended for them to hold onto with their dirty hands and not actually eat. So you start at the savoury end and finish at the sweet end. 2 courses in 1 pasty.

I often wonder about the way they present local or ethnic bread and pastry items. Would have liked a bit more on the number of crimps, eh, Paul? He obviously had no idea when actually asked.
We had two references to Hollywood’s backside in this week’s episode. Is this a trend? Should he complain to a #MeToo campaign? And can we just be grown ups occasionally? Asking for a friend. Oh, and maybe we should be allowed to see the backside for ourselves so we can see what all the fuss is about.

I am in Cornwall this week and the talk on Pirate FM on Wednesday was almost entirely pasty-related.

I’m really enjoying this series of Bake Off, after not being so impressed with it after the move to channel 4. The last 2 bakers to leave have been a surprise in that they were previously shown to be “one of the contenders” but on the other hand, each time they did have a bad week so it seems fair that they are judged purely on that and not including past performance.

What a curious episode.
Really can't stand this week's star baker. Don't think it was deserved. A bit of a Ruby going on.
As a theme, it wasn't authentic enough. Throwing matcha at something isn't being Japanese.
They should have sent Cherish in to scare them!

Awful week. I didn't want to eat anything that anyone made, which might actually be a first.

Ah yes the famous Japanese dish... chinese steamed buns.
They are so many things they could have done that would have been half way authentic, the dish choices were bizarre.
