Agree not just great cakes but the savouries too. My favourite challenge ever was the hand raised pie crust. Something I’d never do myself but was fascinating to watch. Yeah - I guess there's not much photogenic about a boring looking pie rather than a three tier mirror glazed whatever balanced on a couple of shards of caramel thing. And the show is poorer for it.

I agree with many of the other comments above. A lot of change is needed for the next series if they want to hold on to the regular viewers. They could do with starting over with new presenters and judges for a start. This series seemed quite mean spirited and giving no instructions for a technical challenge isn't big or clever, it just made the judges look petty and deliberately trying to set the bakers up to fail. It's supposed to be the best home bakers, what is wrong with past challenges of making wedding cakes or decorated bread (I still remember the lion!). Too much faffy construction, which isn't baking and the average home baker doesn't do it so it's not like you're watching thinking - ooh I'll try that on the weekend.
The official website actually describes the signature challenge as, "Testing the bakers’ personality, creative flair and baking ability, the main challenge here is to produce something cute, rustic and altogether home-made-looking. It’s in this test that the Bakers get to show off their tried-and-tested handcooked bites." How many times have the bakers been criticised when the bake doesn't look perfect or isn't uniform etc.

I've yet to see the final as I'm currently away but agree with a lot of the comments. We need a change of hosts as neither are funny and don't add anything. Not sure about changing the judges though as I think generally they do a good job. Some of the bake choices have been questionable. Let's get back to cakes, bread and soggy bottoms. I also think that Bake Off Extra Slice has gone downhill. Every year they bring on the same celebrity panel who clearly don't watch the programme and just watch a recording of the show in advance so they appear to be big fans and know what they are talking about. And I really do not like Tom Allen at all. I find him smarmy and patronising. This year his "letching" over Sandro week after week, to be honest, I find offensive. Now if was a straight man perving over a female contestant there would be uproar but as he is gay he seems to get away with it. Not acceptable.

The last series of the Aussie BakeOff was great, and they seemed to get the balance right as far as creativity and traditional bakes are concerned. Some of the unusual (to us) flavours and ingredients being used like wattle, myrtle and finger limes were quite imaginative.

Isn't Tom Allen's whole shtick being "smarmy and patronising"?

The last two challenges were (for me) disappointing. the puddings all looked inedible, and the final constructions were just ugly and messy. Not the spectacular baking I expected from a final.

What sort of ratings does GBBO get these days? Way down on its heyday, I imagine.

What sort of ratings does GBBO get these days? Way down on its heyday, I imagine. Despite people being a bit unsatisfied with the show, it seems to be doing pretty well. It’s a few weeks old, but according to this www.barb.co.uk/viewing-data/most-viewed-programmes/ it was the fourth most watched show that week, after the launch episode of I’m a Celebrity… and both Strictly’s. Interesting to see that while it’s still the most watched soap Corrie only gets about 5 million nowadays. Back in the 90’s, when the only way I could get any TV news was via Ceefax, I’m sure it used to regularly get about 15m. Eastenders is only around 3.5m now. With huge casts, teams of writers, etc. they must be pretty expensive compared to the rest of the shows in the most-watched list. I bet the executives are looking at the Neighbours situation with great interest.

I think the finals have often been disappointing throughout its existence. That said it's clear that the bakers are not being given chance to shine - lack of time, silly bakes and presenters woi aren't very interested in food. I like both of them but they openly admit that neither of them want to try half of what is being made - isn't Noel a vegan? And Matt confessed to having the taste buds of an 8 year old.
I'd like to see: - the bakers being given enough time to finish bakes with flair - the niceness returning where we see everyone just being nice to everyone else. The gentle acidity of Paul to leaven that a bit. - bakes we can identify with more easily and which don't feel so much like Generation Game challenges

Matt Lucas has announced that he will not be returning as a judge next year.

Host...
Shame it was Matt to leave rather than Noel who is the most irritating host on TV

How incredibly disappointing …. I’ve just read that the ubiquitous, untalented, annoying nonentity that is Alison Hammond is replacing Matt. Why ? Who does she know to get so many tv jobs with no talent ? She’ll add nothing. I won’t be watching, and I enjoy this programme. And I don’t care if everyone wants a go at me, I’m unbelievably disappointed.

That’s a very random choice! Can I ask where you read that please?

That’s a very random choice! Can I ask where you read that please? I read it on the online news, just the headline , couldn’t bring myself to read it in full, I’m devastated. She must be on some kind of contract so they’re getting their moneys worth, saves paying someone with the required presenting skills .

I know she's very "Marmite" and not everyone's cup of tea, but if it's true I think she'll be fabulous. I didn't bother finishing the last series but she'd tempt me back. She's hilarious.

Mute button will be heavily used for me then. Out of curiosity how did her TV career/domination start?

The lovely Alison is a joy to watch - her interview with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling is TV gold, and her laugh can brighten any day.

Mute button will be heavily used for me then. Out of curiosity how did her TV career/domination start? She is an excellent TV presenter - it’s a much harder job than it looks. She has done extraordinarily well for herself over the years working her way up from junket interviews for This Morning (thankless task those, because the guests have spent all day in a hotel room answering the same questions in a series of 3-minute slots) to main presenter. You do not last as long as she has - and progress as steadily as she has - without being very good at your job. She was on Big Brother in 2002. She has had a 20+ year career in TV. Very few people manage that!

Anyone who can get a good interview out of notorious curmudgeon Harrison Ford has to be treasured. I think she'll be much better with the contestants than anyone since Mel and Sue.

I just find her so amateurish and over indulged , and her inclusion will genuinely spoil one of my favourite programmes (just for me of course, they won’t miss me). Susan Calman would be a good choice .

I used to watch Big Brother back then and it’s kinda horrifying to realise it’s 21 years since that series. Jade Goody got all the headlines but Alison, Kate Lawler and Adele Roberts have done pretty well for themselves since. I remember liking Alison back then, but she’s got a very big personality, and I hope it doesn’t end up being about her rather than the contestants.
I think the biggest issue is that the show itself is well past it’s BBE. But it’ll keep going for as long as they can keep flogging spin-off tat…
