Not only is this back on the road in the autumn, and what joy that is, but Adam Cooper is in it. Hurrah!

The new tour of this is starting in Plymouth next week, will anyone from the board be there?

I'm at the Lowry now, mid interval. I still love this. Sadly Adam Cooper not on today though (I saw him as the swan all those years ago and was excited about seeing him again, oh well...) and the guy on instead is a bit disappointing. He just doesn't have the charisma/gravitas whatever it is that Lermontov needs imo. He's not bad, just not imposing enough. I do love Ashley Shaw though, and the ballet within the ballet is just wonderful. My favourite bit is the duet in the graveyard where the bloke can't see her.

That's a shame. I was at the matinee there on Thursday and he performed then, which surprised me as it seems common with most shows that the midweek matinees are the ones the stars don't perform in.
This was only my third ballet and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I saw Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake earlier this year and absolutely loved it, it deserves all the praise it gets. Then I saw Romeo and Juliet, which I liked, but was a little bit confused by, thinking that I knew the story when I should have treated it as something new.
I've never seen The Red Shoes and I decided not to watch the film so I could judge it as it is, but I think that was a mistake too. It meant there were bits I didn't really understand until I read a synopsis afterwards, the most important being that they're in a train station at the end, and the way the curtains pull back to reveal a train made me wrongly think it was part of a performance. But I did enjoy it, and actually the fact that I feel like I didn't fully appreciate it makes me want to see it again when it's in Liverpool in a few months. My favourite parts were where they used a reworked song from Citizen Kane. It makes me want to watch some films with Bernard Herrmann scores as well as the original film.

I love the film! (My drunk turn has apparently become doing the whole *Joooolian, tek orf the red shoooz* thing.) I don't think it would make a whole lot of sense without knowing the film, or at least having read the synopsis beforehand.
I'm not sure how Adam Cooper played it (I remember him being a good actor when I saw him as the Swan all those years ago, so I imagine he was good) but the guy I saw... if I hadn't know better, I'd have guessed he was a bit sulking and stampy that the girl was in love with Julian instead of him.

I saw it with Adam Cooper in Plymouth and had I not been near the front and known who Lermontov was I felt he would have melted into the background, he just didn't stand out and wasn't imposing either. So I don't feel like you missed much!

It sounds shallow, but the guy I saw was far too short to be Lermontov! As you say, he could have been any one of the men on stage at several points. I'm sure I didn't feel that when I saw it last year. Can't remember who I saw then, unfortunately, but it definitely wasn't the guy I saw yesterday.
I love Ashley Shaw though, she was fantastic. And Liam Mower (he was Grisha yesterday) was my absolute favourite.

Funny, I found Adam Cooper was tiny too, I expected him to be big and stand out, if two Lermontov's are like that that's not good. Their website implies that there are 5 Lermontov's, so hopefully one of them stands out from the crowd.
Jealous you saw Liam as Grischa I'd have loved to have seen that in Plymouth, I may have to try and see him as Grischa while it's at Sadler's Wells, he's my favourite, but I am sure we have had this conversation before!

I think he played it kind of aloof, becoming a bit more menacing later on.
It was nice seeing Liam Mower as Ivan and Harrison Dowzell as Anton as I'd seen them as the Prince and Romeo. "We're like a family" has got to be the most over-used showbiz cliche ever, but when Matthew Bourne says it in his programme introductions it does kinda feel like he means it.

This has been cancelled at Newcastle now so I’m crossing my fingers that the recording might be released online/ streaming at some point in the near future as I’d love to see it still.

It was originally supposed to come out in March, but it’s still on iPlayer though so maybe that’s affecting it. Glad to see it is still getting a blu ray though as the listing for that disappeared at one point.
