Sorry to revive a dead thread, but someone commented on Victoria HB’s instagram live yesterday that Andrew Castle made some pretty scathing comments about ALW and Cinderella during his Wimbledon commentary. My immediate reaction to that is
1. Why would he be talking about Cinderella in a tennis commentory, even if his daughter was in it.
2. Who cares what Andrew thinks about ANYthing other that tennis, and he was never any cop at that either!

Who cares what Andrew thinks about ANYthing other that tennis, and he was never any cop at that either! Didn’t see it but ALW was in the crowd on Centre Court so that would have prompted it. |

So Matt Hemley’s (stage editor) Instagram carried a story today advertising an interview with CHF husband Joel Montague.
In the clip he seems to be resurrecting the Cinderella drama by saying that the treatment of the cast and Carrie was ‘disgusting’
Not sure why he’s bringing it up now. Has anyone seen the full interview and can expand. I think it’s on spotlight Tv whatever that is? I think you have to pay?

Desperate for attention. Being honest, I still don't understand the controversy. Nosey front of house staff abused their position to discover that ticket sales were no longer to the extent of the run, spread rumours, and outspoken and unprofessional actors decided to act like petulant children, forcing RUG to make a statement on a bank holiday (for them then to complain about a statement being made on a bank holiday, when they practically held RUG to ransom with crappy Instagram lives...). If everyone actually just takes a step back, they'd see that there really isn't any controversy here at all. Quite clearly the plan was not to release a rushed statement on a bank holiday, but they were left with little choice. Finding out you're losing your job is always tough, but theatre has always been especially cutthroat. A sudden and near closing notice is not really new in the industry. There have been plays and musicals over the decades on Broadway for example that opened and closed so fast they practically left a vacuum.
In London, I think those working fare slightly better. Do you think something like Aspects of Love or Ain't Too Proud would have been allowed to lumber along as many weeks as they have if they were playing to those kinds of numbers in New York?

I’ve never really understood the difference between Broadway and the WE in that regard. Poorly performing Broadway shows seem to be able to close with days notice. There are a fair few plays and musicals struggling for bums on seats in London right now at the height of summer being papered.

I think keeping a show open in New York is just much more expensive - it's more commercial and competitive. There are probably other financial factors such as differences in arts funding, taxes and support for the self-employed too. |

I feel like America is more cutthroat about shows that don't work and also less concerned about people losing their jobs and how they will support themselves.
It probably doesn't help that Broadway publishes the grosses every week, so people know when shows are selling terribly. In London all we have is chatter about papering, empty circles being closed and so on, but we have no idea how badly (or not) shows are performing and what's viable.
That said, both Bad Cinderella and now the Britney Spears thing limped on with terrible sales for some weeks before they announced closing and Cindy had a fairly long period between the announcement and the actual closing.
