It’s Emerald Fennel, who has written it with ALW.

Wonder if the Lord will bless us with a cast recording before it opens? If it’s online only, he can still jiggle it around if need be to match up when the show is locked.

It’s honestly going to be something to really look forward to once theatres get back open.

Oh it's totally what we need to lift the lockdown spirits - I'd love that! Sadly though I reckon he's forever stung by the Love Never Dies CD hoo-ha and won't release full CD until after opening....

To be honest I more then happy to wait for the cast recording to be done once the show is locked down and there happy with it! I hate nothing more then an inaccurate or incomplete cast recording!

What he could (and perhaps should, IMHO) do is to release 1-2 songs ahead as singles, maybe even in an amended fashion. Get people talking about it, take an interest, maybe even generate a moderate chart hit.
While more recent attempts such as Boyzone's "No Matter What" (massive chart success, yet Whistle Down The Wind didn't succeed as a stage musical) didn't work all that well, there used to be a time when pre-released songs caused a big buzz, such as Julie Covington's "Don't cry for me Argentina". And right now with musical theatre dead as a dodo people are starved for new show music, new tunes, excitement, etc. so it would be a perfect time.

People really are starved for new MT music and recording a couple of tracks as singles could be absolutely the way to go. And would currently get to a wider audience than usual I'd argue.

I’m going to be the odd one out here - these songs sound NAFF. I love ALW (I did two of his shows) but the tedious 1980’s sounding chord sequences are old fashioned and we have moved on from this.
I hope I’m wrong and Carrie sounds amazing but I just don’t want the score to sound like a cheesy Whistle Down the Wind meets plonky Stephen Ward. It’s his worst kind of writing nothing like the wonders of the melodic and musically superb Evita or the lush romantic scores of Sunset and Phantom.
School of Rock also fell into this plonky cheesy bad writing/typical chord sequences but was held up by a sensational book that saved the day.
Fingers crossed!!

If you think we’re getting any risks or things that aren’t tried and tested in the W/E for at least five years I think you’ll be mistaken. Star vehicles, revivals, jukebox, movie to stage adapts and re-hashes are all anyone will put their money in.
I’d welcome a return to ALW doing what he knows he is good at. He’s put more than enough in to be self indulgent in his later years. I’d have been tempted to quit after ‘Aspects’. 😂

He either said in an interview or an article that he might consider releasing a concept album due to the delays. Either a promo EP or concept album would be cool. We just need something to keep us going.

We just need something to keep us going. It's a shame concept albums aren't done more. I really liked the Whistle Down The Wind one. Nice to see how the songs are imagined as singles vs how they appear in the show. Tina Arena's version of the title song with that epic vocal was sensational, but quite different to the more gentle version appropriate for it's position in the musical. Also loved the Duncan James and Keedie(?) version of I Believe My Heart from Woman In White. So yeah - let's have some Cinderella songs :-)

Just the latest snippet sounds like it was pretty elaborate - wonder if it was the try out at "The Other Palace" or if they did another workshop. ALW seems to record a lot of his stuff that may or may not get released. Sunset "World Premiere Recording" I think some of that was from Sydmonton. LND he did a concept album with John Barrowman as Raol and then if I recall not only did he recast Raol but re-wrote the first Act and re-did the recording. I realize I'm in a minority but I'd be purchasing/downloading any and all of those things. If nothing else, it's fascinating to me to see the changes, development and progression the shows make

I love buying multiple CDs (where they exist) of the same show for the ones I am obsessed with. I adore seeing changes, development and progression! For the mega musicals that usually ended with the German cast recordings - they are amazing as they normally have definitive versions of the orchestrations and were done with huge orchestras in the 80s/90s and sound just sensational. I have 9 different official Starlight Express CDS; all different versions of the show..... Just the 2 official ones for LND however.

with the ability to record and release being so much easier and cheaper, it's kind of shocking how they rarely update these scores. When Sunset first opened on Broadway, the revival of Grease was playing on Broadway and they had something like three releases of their cast recording with each major cast change (just re-used the orchestrations) and the speculation was that "we would have a shelf full of Normas". Sadly that never happened. Would've most definitely had loved Betty Buckley, Debra Byrne (Australia - the clips of her are amazing), Rita Moreno (the shortest tenured Norma who filled in I think when Betty was sick before Elaine Paige stepped in)... eh... who said we needed new ways to dream? these are old dreams

I would think there's also a lot of royalties and fees that would have sky-rocketed if this was a full cast recording with the entire cast. It makes sense why the performances of the leading ladies was commemorated either on their own solo recordings (which were sold at the theatres) or in the form of a Sunset Blvd EP. This luckily gave us recordings of Betty Buckley (as EP and solo recording) and Debra Byrne (solo recording and non-commercial promo recording with Hugh Jackman). Rita stepped in for Petula Clark when Clark was on holiday. The plan was for her to replace Clark when Clark was to replace Elaine Paige on Broadway, but the shows closed on both sides of the Atlantic.

If you have recordings of the really exceptional people who played the role they become a high hurdle to match. Without a recording i think i know who the best performers were , but can't relive it, compare directly to it, or stay at home, and listen to someone doing it better, and save loads of money while i listen to the recording.

Why DID Sunset close? On Broadway and West End? They weren't covering their weekly operating costs. ie they were losing more money than they were making.

Why DID Sunset close? On Broadway and West End? I was a mega-fan at the time, and if I recall, this was front-page news on the NY Times - last time I can recall any broadway production getting that type of coverage... As ali pointed out it wasn't making it's weekly costs. But the sad thing about it is that with a little prudence it easily could have. I think this was one of the last times ALW was lead producer on one of his shows. He recognized that he wasn't really the best to make budget decisions when it came to his productions. Especially for Broadway - Sunset opened with a record $35 million advance ticket sale - a record that held until the Hello Dolly revival with Bette Middler a few years ago (so even Hamilton had not broken that record) In someone elses hands, there was no reason that it couldn't have recouped its Broadway costs and been labelled a "hit" www.nytimes.com/1997/02/04/theater/for-sunset-boulevard-it-s-the-end-of-the-road.html
