In the last 2 weeks
Kinky Boots has started discounting on TKTS just after Olivier wins
A major play which was rave reviewed has been papering
Ditto 2 other major west end new openings
People Places and Things (THE play) is far from sold out
Even Sunset Boulevard has tickets going at all prices and that is supposed to be the "hottest ticket in town"

Ludicrous ticket prices. I never go to the West End anymore - even the cost of half price makes me think twice. It's definitely too much for a spur of the moment decision. And I have no kids, a reasonably-paying job and am only paying for one ticket - if you're a couple/family, you're looking at hundreds for a single night out. Even if you can afford it, it's hard to justify.

Prices probably play a significant part; possibly also the fact that school holidays have just ended; the days are getting lighter and longer so people might prefer outdoor activities and also, maybe they assume that a well-reviewed or award-winning production will be sold out?

Kinky Boots has started discounting on TKTS just after Olivier wins How many tickets allocated to TKTS per performance? TKTS customers are another audience sector who will spread the word about the show more widely. News about Olivier wins does influence some people for a variable period of time but it's hardly the sole tool of a successful marketing strategy. In fact, many of the keen theatregoers who are well aware of the awards, and may have been influenced by them in past years, know that they are now voted for from within in the industry and so are devalued in terms of rewarding quality, and are instead now much more blatantly a blunt tool of commercial promotion.

Security fears? I know of some people who have cancelled recent trips to London because of the Brussels attacks etc. This deters US visitors too. Definitely ticket prices, I think this is affecting both casual and regular theatre-goers.

I think producers need to cut down ticket prices to be honest, they're usually £70 each. I go loads with my family so our trips always end up costing around £200!
Producers are scared that they won't earn money but expensive tickets puts people off.
I think half the reason Mrs H is closing is because of the prices. We wanted to see it but it wasn't a show we desperately wanted to see (unlike Dreamgirls and Kinky Boots) so we went for £40 seats (still only grand circle!). But we would've got for the stalls, where we usually go, if it was £40, they would've sold more tickets I think
