Quite looking forward to Southwark's new theatre in Newington Butts although I wonder what will happen to the old place? I assume it'll be redeveloped as new homes. Was always a temporary arrangement but thankfully landlord is in no hurry. It'll become another high rise in turn, matching the new Travelodge that has grown in between Southwark and the railway line. Great to hear a new London Bridge location has been found after the space in the redeveloped station was lost. And hopefully the new Elephant and Castle location cannot be far off opening (though I've been told "it'll be open this time next year" for several years running haha. So eventually they will have the location at Elephant (300 seater), and two spaces at London Bridge (150/250 seaters). That’s quite impressive for sure. Presumably the current space will continue for the next few years alongside the new Elephant location (when it eventually opens). They will certainly need some ambitious programming with an additional stage.

The old Granada cinema in Hoe Street E17 is being made into a theatre for the Soho Theatre. I saw the Who here in about 1966.The Rolling Stones and Beatles also played here. There is a very big auditorium and you felt you were at somewhere special. It has since been used as a church and for raves so may well have been damaged. There was a renown organ that could rise out of the floor. No car parking but good access from Walthamstow Central Station and buses. I wish them well. There is currently no theatre in Waltham Forest. So it may fill a need.
The latest news is that it will have a "soft launch" in November 2023 and a grand opening in February.

Very near to me so hopefully they have a decent programme with things I would like to see. Isnt/wasn't there a small theatre above a pub somewhere in Walthamstow?

The theatre in Walthamstow will be 1000 seats which is a good size especially for comedians who perhaps have a fanbase but couldn't fill an arena or the Hammersmith Apollo.
The Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central is super quick so it won't be difficult to get to.

Or central line to Leyton and bus across the road to Walthamstow which stops right by the theatre.

Just received the latest copy of "Waltham Forest News" the local Council's newspaper. It says that the building will reopen in 2023 and Soho Theatre Walthamstow's first programme of shows will be in early 2024. Tickets will go on sale this year. I hope they will give a discount to Waltham Forest residents like the Theatre Royal E15 does with Newham residents. No mention of the organ, I guess it has gone. I would have loved to have seen it rise out of the floor playing music. The article says that to get the latest updates sign up at walthamforest.gov.uk/soho .

I went to the Lightroom to visit the installation about Hockney. That was quite good if you already knew a lot about Hockney and it wasn’t cheap. Apart from that there is nothing there, a poor unstocked cafe and a nice place to sit outside. Otherwise pointless. If it going to be a theatre they had better get on with it.

I loved the Hockney, I found the cafe to be buzzing - no place to sit so we went elsewhere.

There is an enormous amount of public space around the Kings X development, which will obviously mature in time though the focus, atm, seems to be around the canal area. I saw Google's 'skyscraper on its side' at the weekend - that is really coming along. Anyway, here's an article that indirectly concerns London's new 1,500 seat theatre at Olympia (so the same size as Sadler's Wells), due to open in about a year. I've cycled around parts of the site and *I think* the building partly shown on the left-side of the image is the new theatre. It'll be an interesting read for some www.telegraph.co.uk/art/architecture/thomas-heatherwick-olympia-london/Also, here's a link to Sadler's Wells East, which will be on our radar pretty soon now - ignore the tube for this one, it's better to take the train from Kings X / St Pancras (one stop, about 8 minutes to Stratford), or the Elizabeth Line: www.sadlerswells.com/about-us/our-theatres/sadlers-wells-east/

Just read in the local free newspaper that the new Soho Theatre Walthamstow opening will be delayed until 2025. It will have 970 seats.

Time to add Earth Theatre in Hackney to the list. I'm not really sure why they are calling it new, it's an old space that has been refurbed and not all that recently, I've been to more than one gig there post covid. I think this is the first longer running theatre work going in there but it has had any number of smaller pieces, gigs, comedy etc.
I'm really curious as to how they are going to do seating as it is an odd old tiered Art Deco space. I would be very hesitant to book without seeing a pic, anything I've seen has been general admission which wasn't the most comfortable as you just sit on the tiers themselves.

Have heard that You Me Bum Bum Train may finally be coming back somewhere in Central London, anyone have any idea where? Didn’t they get accused of exploitation? Has anyone been to one of their shows? I have done a couple of YMBBT shows - the first was quite an experience, but having done it once there were diminishing returns from the second show. The shows are pretty much entirely run by volunteers as there is a huge cast and crew involved. Following the first show I actually went back another night to volunteer as I wanted to see how different audience members reacted to the situation they were put in - I ended up doing the lights for one of the scenes for a whole evening. I didn't mind as it was interesting to do, but I can understand if theatre is your career, either as a performer or backstage, you might resent this show operating with so few paid creatives. On the other hand, I don't think they make any money on the shows, so it's not as if there is some producer getting rich on the back of exploited labour. And the tickets are normally graded in price from free to low three figures, all of which give the same experience. One of the scenes in the first show I attended was walking through a door and finding yourself on a TV studio set, where the announcer introduced "The xxx xxx Show" by name, and I was sat down in front of an autocue with a studio audience, and I introduced my first guest, Jonathan Ross... I then got a few minutes without autocue and without any preparation to interview Jonathan Ross. I did the lights for that scene when I volunteered and Andy Nyman played the talk show guest for most of the night. I'm pretty sure that neither Jonathan Ross nor Andy Nyman were being paid for that. I know that they were hoping to do another show in 2024, but the last I heard they were still looking for a venue, although that was some months ago.
