Your profile pic is all I needed today. You're welcome. It's two of my favourite theatre things in one scrumptious package. Well, four, if you also include my love of a bow tie and a fancy red carpet frock.

Just caught up with it on TV. What was that opening number all about? Looks like they cobbled it together half an hour before the show.

I thought Rosalie totally over-egged that performance last night. I saw the show twice and neither time did she perform Being Alive like that. Presumably she was told to go ‘bigger’ for the RAH but that’s not necessarily right for tv. It all looked a bit cliched and, dare I say, desperate.
It was downright bad. Shrill, occasionally off-pitch, and over-emphatic in all the wrong ways. It bore very little resemblance to the (much better) performance I saw (like you, twice) at the Gielgud.

I was just thinking. If ITV have come to the end of their deal for the rights. Channel 5 could go for it with the lovely Jane ‘I’ve got a Bafta’ McDonald doing it as a double act with Jason Manford ! It could come from Tower Bridge on a glorious cruise ship (inbuilt sponsorship) with Jane doing the opening and closing numbers. Interval chat from HMS Belfast. Afterparty at the Tower of London. They’d be mad not to - surely. 🛳

I wouldn't go as far as saying it was BAD, but it was definitely a bit pitchy and over egged. She performed it similarly to that on closing night at the Gielgud but it worked in the context of the heightened emotional atmosphere that night.
She really should have taken it back to basics for the Olivier performance.
That said, all the performances looked sparse on that stage. The RAH is a dreadful venue for this.

What was that opening number all about? Looks like they cobbled it together half an hour before the show. Completely agree. Also, why weren't Janie Dee and Ruthie Henshall introduced on screen? Disrespectful to them and to the audience. No wonder it gets terrible ratings for ITV. It was just not good TV.

Like the rest of you I was shocked when the marvellous Sharon D. Clarke won best leading female. Unlike the rest of you I don’t agree that Rosalie Craig should’ve won, for me she was just above average. Also uncomfortable that Patti Lupone won hers, but really I am more chilled on this one and. An take this one on the chin. Jonathan Bailey was fantastic and absolutely deserves his. Company as a whole winning? Saw this one coming, as it’s Stephen Sondheim and rule 1 of the rulebook is that Stephen Sondheim has to win the Olivier, this one was as laughable as Sweeney Todd winning a few years back. I really like Stephen Sondheim as a person, but don’t get this one winning. A Monster Calls wins for Best Entertainment, I really loved this and blew me away last year. But I feel if the producers of Six pertitioned for this category that would have won instead. The Inheritance, Kyle Soller and Stephen Daltry winning all well deserved for and incredible piece of stagecraft, surprised this has gone to Broadway Patsy Ferron along with Jonathan Bailey had their name written on the award already, her performance was truly marvellous. Come From Away Rocks and deserves everything.
Agree where posted elsewhere that musicals and plays should be split, as these are 2 different genres of theatre.

The Olivier Awards are intelligent and/or culturally rich...? I feel like you've got a stereotypical idea of ITV's output that is ignoring everything that doesn't fit into your narrow idea of anti-intellectual/culturally destitute, whether on purpose to make an exaggerated point or accidentally because you're genuinely unaware, but ITV are just as likely to churn out a prestige drama as the BBC, and the BBC has its fair share of unscripted fluff and/or petty squabbling too. (Hell, maybe Jeremy Kyle should take over Newsnight for a bit...) My point - which has been sorely missed, possibly as a result of my critical opening statement, or otherwise - was not with regard to dramatic output of any broadcaster, but in support of theatre and the Oliviers. I feel your being somewhat deliberately antagonistic and I'm trying not to bite. People have been posting here repeatedly emphasising their despondency at the lack of media attention theatre is getting, these days. There has also been conversation about the lack of airtime the Awards receives and the drop in its general public appeal. Furthermore, some have stated a drop in sales and a a slump in the wider appeal of Theatre. My point, made whilst sitting though 3 hours of ITVs programming as broadcast*, was that less than 12 hours after the awards there was no mention of them in the daytime programming. I found this strange. Particularly given that at least one section is dedicated to "showbiz" news. Not giving the awards any attention the next day results in a huge lost opportunity to generate attention. Had they given even 90 seconds to it, some people could have been triggered into: "Oh, whats that about, I'll have a look at it OnDemand" or others provoked into going online to look it up and spend a bit of time giving theatre some much needed attention, which could snowball into something bigger. *(ironically lost here)

How did the practicalities work for the performances? People arrived for the red carpet in whatever hair and makeup and dresses, and then performed, and then were seen in the audience later back in their red carpet outfits again. Ok, I can see for Rosalie Craig she could just nip out, change her frock and shoes, do her song and then change back. But the ladies from Six had some very elaborate hair for the red carpet (and again when the awards were being given out, not long after their performance) but totally different hair for the performance. Sharon D Clarke was another one who looked totally different ten minutes after her performance when she was claiming her award. Do they really all have their hair done three times in one night?

I was also wondering this! I noticed Aime Atkinson had had her hair elaborately braided and coiffed yet she had her usual high ponytail for the performances then afterwards had her braided hairstyle again. I can't imagine she got her hair styled that quickly again after their performance.

It is simply just a quick change into show outfits and out again. That's why you see alot of actresses in particular tend to perform with their award show makeup but in costume, it's just practicality.
It should be noted, with the Six girls, they actually opened Act 2 of the ceremony. So they had the entire interval to get ready for their performance.

I was pleased Patsy Ferran won as she seems a real younger acting talent. She could have an Olivia Coleman type career IMO.
One slight moan was the Daily Mail online donating much of their coverage to certain "names" who weren't even nominated and they described Tom Hiddleston as looking "Devilishly Handsome" - a term probably last used by Barbara Cartland.

Yes, but Aimie Atkinson in particular had a really fancy braided to, which she could have just left in place for the performance, but instead swapped to her ponytail - wouldn't have taken too long to undo the fancy do and put it in a pony tail during the interval. But then she was back in her fancy do again after the performance. It seems crazy to me. (Plus "the entire interval" isn't very long to change a hairdo on top of a costume change.)

Rosalies performance was so over the top it was painful to watch. She didn’t impress me in the show and she certainly didn’t here. That number should have got a standing ovation if done properly- it merely got polite applause.
Hers was a very unremarkable performance in Company and I’d say she’s done well to generate as much attention for it as she has. Truth is- whoever played that role would have got the same.

Not only that, I have seen photos from the after party and her hair was back in the ponytail again!

I don't remember seeing her on screen after the performance as when the Six Queens were announced in their catagory the camera was only on a couple of them. Maybe in the interval she took it out and keep it out after the performance?

Maybe - but then what a waste of the fab braided do, to only have it for the red carpet!

I rewinded and it looks like Aimie didn't have the braid back in after the performance. The camera was focused on her when the "Best Supporting Actress" nominations were read out and it's quite dark to see but it doesn't look like it. So she must have just had the braid for the red carpet.

She's a beautiful girl so no matter what her hairstyle is, she always looks amazing.

The cameraman still focused on "not Jonathan Bailey" even as Jonathan gets up to accept the award, I can't deal. 😂😂

Don't nominees normally sit by the aisle so they can get out easily, and so the camera can focus on them? If so, I can see why the cameraman has focused on him, as that's probably where Jonathan should have been sitting.

I thought that may be what happened too however Jonathan was also sat front row of his section so he may of also been sat in the correct place as it was a front row. Either way, it made for a hilarious moment!
