Ivo van Hove is directing a new stage adaptation of Mann's "Death in Venice", opening at Carré Theater, Amsterdam, on Thursday. This new work is '"neither an opera nor a music theater piece'" but rather "a play with a lot of room for music"' and features an original score by Nico Muhly - performed live by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - together with music by Richard Strauss, Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg. Apparently 'the production will tour Europe from next year, with performances in London, Paris and Zagreb'. Saw this last night in Amsterdam; as per the programme, it's co-produced by the Barbican (and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris) : )

Saw this last night in Amsterdam; as per the programme, it's co-produced by the Barbican (and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris) : ) Any thoughts/comments? Overall an enjoyable evening; was ready to not buy into the concept (i.e. putting Thomas Mann in a dialogue with his main character from Death in Venice) but it was done tastefully and not too self-referentially. It was a treat to see the ITA actors on the same stage as the Concertgebouw Orchestra. When it comes to Van Hove at the Barbican, it's much more entertaining and satisfying than Antigone and Obsession combined!

When is it going to London? Nothing announced yet - can't see any info on any other tour dates either. Looking at the Barbican's website they have nothing announced beyond mid October, but they normally have the RSC residency in there from October to January. So I suspect some time next year is most likely.
