She's got a great voice! I'm surprised people say she can't sing, I've always thought she has a great voice!

13 is a Jason Robert Brown piece. He would never let anyone auto-tune in anything.

People can be a bit funny about what they consider "singing". I know people who will say with absolute sincerity that they don't think Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera are good at singing, because of the riffing. I have a friend who believes belting is just shouting and most modern musical theatre is therefore bad (GOD I want to go to her house with an Elaine Stritch mixtape so badly). If you don't enjoy the style of singing, as with most things, it's very easy to say "it's just bad" rather than looking at it a little more in-depth and saying "okay, it's not my jam, but it is technically good". And I think it's very easy to do that with Ariana Grande, especially if you don't like her songs, because she has an absolutely fantastic voice but I don't think her music shows it off to its best advantage.

Anyone saying that a professional singer 'can't sing' is an idiot. There's a big difference between not enjoying a singer's voice, and them not being able to sing.
The use of autotune doesn't mean that a professional singer 'can't sing'. The very best singers in the world won't hit every note perfectly every time! People get ill, tired, they get pregnant, they get vocal damage - in the modern music industry a sub-par performance will simply be fixed, rather than wait for the singer's voice to recover.
With non-singers placed in singing roles it's a whole different kettle of fish - but that is clearly not the case with Ariana or Mariah or Christina.
You know, it always seems to be women who I hear this 'can't sing' thing about....

I think there's a strong attitude of "That person has more money/influence/power/fame than I do, but I don't like them so there must be something wrong with them".
