I'm feeling hopeful for this one!
I just listened to the full Baby One More Time on the website, and was pleasantly surprised!
I like the artwork already, and I believe with the right marketing and the right amount of appearances/TV Spots it could do very well. Nice to see such a risk be taken by producers, here's hoping!

I heard they were originally going to call this 'The Blitz' because it's going to bomb so badly but changed their minds at the last minute. Wise I think.

(Also there's already a musical called Blitz!, and anyone expecting solid Lionel Bart show-tunes would probably be a bit startled by Max Martin pop bangers.)

I love new work but these seems to be in the wrong space I’m afraid. Give it a few months before Pretty Woman goes there..... What a lovely beacon of sunshine and optimism about something before it's opened  Several theatre aficionados on a niche message board, predicting its demise, will make absolutely no difference to this, whether it sells or not.
The poster is making a reasonable call on this and I agree, a musical no one has ever heard of opening in a reasonably big house, that doesn't have much footfall going past, is going to be a very tough sell and I don't give it long.
I agree with Andy that it should've gone through a more comprehensive development process and done a month or so at the Other Palace to gauge both demand and quality.
The caveat about Memphis is a very good example, a Broadway hit, 2 strong leads, Beverley Knight known outside theatre circles and came in on the back of shifting lots of tickets for the Bodyguard, the show also got very good 4 stars reviews across the board, also the economy was growing. So this is the benchmark you have to surpass, this show I feel won't do that.
A flop musical is detrimental to the West End and damaging.
So could be Pretty Women or another Broadway transfer.

Bat out of Hell opened like this and look at it now. It's well loved by many and it's had 2 West End runs and a Canadian run so far.

You simply can't compare the 2 shows. 1 has been around for years and has instant name recognition across the world, the other is a complete unknown to everyone. Who knows, it might be great! I suspect it won't be. But I'll be going along to find out. |

I suppose you can compare it in some ways to Six though, in terms of an idea that might sound a bit ridiculous and flop worthy that actually turned out great.
The Six wives bought up to date as basically tribute acts to famous modern pop singers and competing on who's the lead singer of a girl group? I mean... that sounds possibly as crazy as the story of Juliet after Romeo set to max martins pop songs.
The thing with Six though is that it started small and grew and developed and even now, as the big hit show it is today, is still only in a small off west end house. You do have to say that's it's really risky putting a show like this in a mid sized west end theatre straight off the bat.
But, we'll see. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Can you compare the Arts Theatre to the Shaftesbury though? Would SIX (which I haven’t seen yet) work at the Adelphi? Some shows like Dogfight, BatBoy, and I presume Six and so on are meant for shorter runs and fringe type/smaller venues. |

The show sounds as if it will either be great fun or a hideous train-wreck, with nothing in between.
Miriam-Teak Lee is a spectacular talent, as anyone who saw her in 'On the Town' already knows; "...Baby One More Time" really isn't my favourite song, but the arrangement is interesting and she sounds great. I'm sure I'll see it in Manchester.

I imagine the poster wanted more detail on where or how you heard about it or what evidence there was and where it was. |

It's exciting that Max Martin is finally getting a jukebox musical that he has power over and it's very sad people don't know who he is.
I wish, though, that it were a collaboration between Scott Bradlee from Post Modern Jukebox as that would be an interesting spin on his songs and they would make them truly theatrical - as well as add another marketing spin.
The "what happened next" thing is an interesting ploy that worked for Wicked - and if we're dealing with an iconic character such as Juliet - I can see that working.
This will need very clever marketing behind it - but it may seem perfect for the social media age... nothing helps a show more like word of mouth so it will be fun to track its development.

Interested to see what this show is all about and delighted it's another "Manchester Gets It First" musical. I'll deffo be booking for the Opera House; if Bat is anything to go by will be half the price of West End! |

Have to say I am intrigued based on the arrangement of the sample track online. It’s a shame it’s another jukebox but I am pleased to see something new heading for the west end. New productions seem to be in abundance on Broadway and are few and far between here now. It makes financial sense to start somewhere small BUT that often means if it’s successful it transfers to a larger theatre without really adapting to that space, and the expectation of ‘west end’ production values is lowered as a result. We also seem to be relying a lot on small spaces these days at the detriment of people taking risks in larger theatres. They’re doing the right thing by opening in Manchester to build some buzz prior.
Agree with what others are saying though that this is likely to either take off through word of mouth or to dive. I’ll definitely be booking out of intrigue.
