Interesting Trumpian play at Hampstead Downstairs. Hampstead recently changed its policy to promote a Press Night to which the critics are invited. Eden managed mainly 3 stars but all the critics praised the performance of Mariah Gale. She was similarly praised for her performances at the RSC and as Ophelia, Catherine in Proof at the Menier and Isabella in Measure for Measure. Every performance she gives is lauded by critics and I can't understand why we don't see more of her on the West End stage. Eden is a so-so play elevated beyond that by Mariah's performance. Nobody cries onstage like her and it's difficult not to cry with her.
Any other Mariah fans out there?

I saw this and thought it was OK but not one of the better Downstairs plays. However, I cannot understand the praise for Mariah Gale (I did see one review which singled her out) as I found her performance irritatingly mannered and unconvincing, whereas the rest of the cast were fine.

I haven't seen Gale live on stage since her days of being cast in as much as possible by the RSC. I never once found her an interesting performer. The epitome of competent but bland.
She has done some reasonable TV work - but was never impressed by her stage presence.
Clearly something that is a matter of personal taste!
