I think they will go with the Cinderella Broadway outlook, it is a known entity on stage so will be considered a revival.

I think the producers will look at the competition in each category and then lobby for whichever they think they might win (or even get a nom). Olivier committee may do something similar. Right now the Best Revival category looks more of a challenge (Sunset and Funny Girl having been so well received), so can see them pushing for Best New Musical. But a lot can change in next 9 months, and the Oliviers are known for awarding shows still running over those already closed, so perhaps they will go for the only revival still running and hope that gives them the edge.

We obviously won't know until the nominations come out.

Dreamgirls will definitely be nominated though as will Sunset (if its eligible?) and Funny Girl. I think that the best musical category will have The Girls in jt and School of Rock too. Looking to be a great year!!

The Tony committee define a revival as a show that is coming back to Broadway, but must be a 3 year gap, or a show that hasn't played Broadway but is deemed a classic, the latter is how Violet, Hedwig, Little Shop and Cinderella got nominated.

So, Best New Musical nominees for next year? My guess is Dreamgirls, Groundhog Day, The Girls and School of Rock A great year! Bit of counting chickens before they hatch. Big omission that Aladdin will not even get nominated.

By this thought process, then yes, Dreamgirls will be considered a Revival if the Olivier's follow suit with the Tony's mindset.

Yes true, but The Lion King was nominated though.
The Iion King was/is more than a spectacle, than Aladdin, but Aladdin is an all round better musical, hence why it's selling so well on Broadway. Honk winning the Olivier was downright bizarre, how this beat both The Lion King and Mamma Mia.
Not saying that Aladdin will win it, but wouldn't be a bad bet. The Girls won't get nominated in its present form and I expect this to struggle like Beckham did, cannot see people going to see it because Gary Barlow wrote it. Dreamgirls is an unknown quantity at the moment. Read what the late and great Jack Tinkler wrote about it, who hated it in New York and couldn't get over why Frank Rich loved this and hated Blood Brothers and Five Guys Named Moe.

I don't see Aladdin winning but I think it has a shot at nomination.

I think The Girls will do better than Bend it, I hope it does! The Girls is a film virtually everyone knows so people might want to see a musical and it has a proper, true, heartfelt story. It looks very fun and people want to see the loved film on stage, bend it was just some girl who wanted to be a footballer...

I would suggest that Calendar Girls and Bend It Like Beckham were both comparable films. Just because you consider BILB to be about "just some girl who wanted to be a footballer" doesn't mean that the general public consider it in that way nor that they equally don't think that Calendar Girls is "just some women who took their clothes off to make a calendar". BILB was arguably slightly less successful, with box office takings of $74m compared to Calendar Girls of $93m; but on the other hand BILB was BAFTA-nominated, whereas Calendar Girls was not. For reference, the Kinky Boots film only took $8m box office. If you asked ten people on the street, I'm not convinced that Calendar Girls would be a better known film name than Bend It Like Beckham. In the case of The Girls, the musical doesn't share the same name as the film, so the immediate recognition might even be diminished further. Given that this thread is about the Oliviers, then the recognition or not of the underlying film is unlikely to have any impact on the nominations/awards for the musical. That will (hopefully!) be about the quality of the score/lyrics/book/performances etc.

The Oliviers are now nominated and voted by the industry so, although there's still arguably some variable element of recognition of quality, there is a much greater feature of commercial puff to sell product.

If Aladdin got nominated over shows like Bridges of Madison County and If/Then at the Tonys (admittedly flawed shows but both with incredible moments, just like Aladdin) then it will get nominated over The Girls. Of course they may both get nominated.

Were there any new musicals last year that didn't get nominated this year but deserved to? Looks like they'll be lots of new musicals running to win next year

Do you think that tickets will go on sale for public demand again this year? It's at a different venue this year too, so I'm not sure what they will do ticket wise?

They are gaining a couple of thousand seats by moving to the Royal Albert Hall. Gonna need to fill those some how. Important people on the lower levels, fill the gallery with the general public.

Now don't go getting your hopes up that you'll be able to book a seat next to Sheridan.. Actually will she even be eligible given the small amount of performances she's done? Do you think that tickets will go on sale for public demand again this year? It's at a different venue this year too, so I'm not sure what they will do ticket wise?

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Thanks a lot! There will be lots of good nominated shows next year so it should be a good ceremony. Fingers crossed I'll bag tickets!

It's NEVER a good ceremony regardless of how many good shows are nominated. I've sat through about 10 of them over the years and never again. It's always a shambles.

I think one of the big reasons for it being a shambles was the ROH. With a performance the evening prior there simply isn't enough time to set up. With the RAH they may get an extra day to set up, which could do them a world of good.
