I don't think 1984 is eligible. I believe this return is a transfer of the existing production, so it wouldn't count as a revival, and if it was going to be nominated for Best New Play, surely that would've happened a couple of years ago.

It was nominated for Best New Play in 2014 when it was at the Almeida, but lost out to Chimerica. Surprisingly it appears that was the only thing it was nominated for that year! Also it has been to the Playhouse twice since then and it hasn't been nominated again, not that it should be either. This year's cut off date was 16th February 2016, so that means The End of Longing could have been nominated, but wasn't as it opened 12th February. Motown opened 8th March so that could be eligible for next year, as was The Painkiller which was the 5th March (although I'm not sure if that was the preview or the press night. Doesn't matter either way!). Speaking of The Painkiller, has this actually been performed in London (or anywhere) before Branagh and Brydon did it at Belfast Lyric? If not, shouldn't it be under "Best New Comedy"?

American Idiot won't be eligible as it was on at the Art's Theatre last year. Motown will be eligible. 1984 won't be eligible as it already ran a few years ago, unless it's counted as a revival. I don't think Beverley is eligible as the Olivier's don't tent to like nominating show's that come back to the West End after a little break. The End of Longing isn't eligible, they would've been eligible for the Olivier Awards 2016. Kunal Nayyar is supporting in The Spoils. You may want to change where you've put Jesse Eienberg. I reckon The Painkiller would go under 'Best New Comedy'.

Isn't any acting performance eligible officially even a take over in a role. As Mel C got nominated for Blood Brothers. I imagine therefore Beverly Knight would be even if the Bodyguard is not.

That's really bizarre, replacements are usually not considered for awards. Perhaps they just thought that was the performance of a lifetime or something? The Olivier's make up the rules as they go along, they really need to change how they run things.

Robert Lindsay won in 1997 for Oliver! after Jonathan Pryce originated the role, as did Alex Jennings in 2002 in My Fair Lady, again after Jonathan Pryce.
As for Beverly Knight, I'm not sure because if she was to be nominated wouldn't it have already happened for when was playing the role at the Adelphi? If she hadn't played it then, they maybe her performance at the Dominion would have been nominated. Even for a replacement to be nominated, I imagine it must be because of an exceptional performance, or a lack of competition.

I hope she'll be up for it this year as its been like 2 years since the west end saw it and she is fab. i think she should've won for Memphis!!

After seeing Sheridan in Funny Girl, just give her the Olivier. She 100% deserves that award after the performance she gave and I imagine it will happen for her.

Can we get some official clarification; are venues like the St James, Arts and Charing Cross actually eligible? They aren't - to the best of my knowledge - SOLT houses, but then the King's Cross has somehow blurred the lines.

Kings Cross isn't a fringe venue given it has over 1000 seats, given The Railway Children likely cost more to run than most shows

I would say no that these aren't eligible theatres as there hasn't been many nominations recently from these venues.

In which case shows at the Duchess, Criterion, Vaudeville or Trafalgar Studios wouldn't count, no?

Poor Show Boat may of just been shot in the foot with its closing notice. I fear it may not get the recognition it may of got if it had closed in January. Especially the likes of Gina Beck and some of the other cast.

I also just thought, with the postponement of Audra in Lady Day, that has thrown Leading Actress in a Play wide open too!

Looks like School of Rock can go back on the Best New Musical list, seeing as it's opening in October at the New London!

I know it's never played the West End but it cannot be considered a new musical. I reckon it'll be placed in musical revival and Aladdin get the nomination instead.
