I will warn you guys, at the start of Amber's speech she says "I play Effie White every night" and almost spat out my tea when I heard it last night. She said "every night" 4 times!

"You can do this if you want to" Really? I can't act, I can't sing and I can't dance but I suppose that hasn't stopped Amanda Holden...

Have they picked the most boring song from each musical that's featured?!

Gary didn't look amused when Groundhog Day won best musical! No disrespect to The Girls, as I said, I liked it... but Gary really did need taking down a peg or two.

I just don't get Tim Minchin.
Tim Minchin singing baffles me even more.

I was watching on +1 but I've abandoned it. The luvviedom is off the scale.
And the performances dreadfully flat. Even Stick It To The Man had the life sucked out of it.

I'm watching it now. The Girls are at least doing one of the better numbers from the shows! And glad its not Gary doing it, nice to see the cast actually represented!

Lovely speech by Branagh. Lovely twinkly Mark Rylance. Lovely dancing from The Red Shoes contingent.
Unfortunately, some truly ugly singing.
And why, oh why, are some people so incoherent when they win awards? If you're nominated, there's just a chance you might win, dear - take some time to jot down a few thoughts that will fill 30 seconds and not leave you looking like an utter prat up there on stage... Thank goodness for the ones that can string a sentence together!

This country really doesn't do award shows well.

Well I managed half an hour. Skipping through of course. The Girls and Dreamgirls had the best performances easily. I just got really bored, and Norma and Anthony acting shocked they won, I was just like oh please! It was funny seeing David Flynn's reaction to not winning, either way he seemed put out or surprised, so that could be surprise that Andy won or that he lost. But he doesn't do half the shows so he really shouldn't be that surprised. Was lovely seeing Sheridan loving Amber's performance and win, she seems alot happier now than she has been. Overall dissapointed how boring it was. And in truth, Harry Potter made it boring. Sorry. And I'm not gonna say it doesn't deserve them as I haven't seen it, and I personally am a huge Harry Potter fan and can't wait to see it, but it made this show incredibly dull for a televison audience. They shoulda shown it live so at least the excitement of it would make it better.

I mean yeah it was awful but I think it was a major improvement on previous years:
- All awards shown - All performances shown - No cutting to Covent Garden to hear The Wizard and I for the 10th year in a row instead of showing an actual award - Jason Manford kept it simple and didn't overshadow with comedy attempts
Personally prefer to see a speech from a surprised, overwhelmed person than a boring 'oh thanks bye' speech.
Especially loved getting to see the interaction between Russell Tovey and Jamie Parker when he won his award, really sweet. And whoever the cameraperson was was clearly on my team when he showed Lin's reaction to Jamie winning, probably my favourite two people in that room.
The performances were all hideous apart from Dreamgirls and The Red Shoes. I think The Girls was the worst of all. But I think that's more to do with the lack of exciting shows we have to show off.

Oh I agree I prefer a shocked overwhelmed person too, but I dunno, it just didn't feel natural to me. Moreso from Norma than Anthony. Anthony seemed genuinely overwhelmed, but there was something about Norma's that didn't sit right with me.

What people are missing is that the Olivier awards got a prime time slot on ITV. Sure, it wasn't live, but anyone is thinks the Olivier justify a live primetime slot on a channel like ITV are delusional. This is great exposure for theatre as a whole.

Billie Piper was just embarrassing... Bemused by the love for Dreamgirls to be honest. If screeching, squawking and bawling through a song like your mic has failed and all you can rely on to fill the massive Albert Hall is the power of your own lungs, then yeah, I suppose it was fab.

No one goes to Dreamgirls to see anything other than incredible vocal power. Amber and her alternates are doing what the show asks of them.

Tickets are selling hugely, Amber got her Olivier and, unless I am mistaken, the only standing ovation of the night at the Oliviers. Audiences are loving it! Its almost a gurantee that is one show that isnt Arry Potter benifited last night, it ws Dreamgirls because of Ambers performance.

I watched it. It did seem a bit longwinded I thought, but it was nice to see the performances, and I love a bit of glamour so loved all the outfits too.
Loved Amber Riley (so did my sister and my mom, and even my dad said she had a good voice, despite having no interest in musical theatre whatsoever!), the JCS performance enthralled me, School of Rock was fun, The Girls was catchy but I'm still not totally overwhelmed by a need to see it. I cannot wait for the Groundhog Day cast album to come out now though, as Hope was my fave bit of the show.
Overall I enjoyed seeing all the stars, and spotting people during the crowd shots, but there wasn't really much buzz and I still have no idea why anyone would want to see the awards several days after the winners are announced, especially casual viewers.I don't know what the solution would be, but it'd be nice if the event felt a bit more glamourous and immediate. Better than doing nothing on a Tuesday night though I suppose.
Still sad about the lack of awards for The Glass Menagerie. I know I've already said that a million times, but it really is the best thing I've seen (play or musical) probably since Groundhog Day last summer. Never mind. I suppose I'll have to catch Harry Potter at some point now, won't I?
I wonder if many people have been inspired to buy tickets for shows they've seen on t.v. tonight?

Do you know what my highlight was actually, thinking about it... seeing Sheridan happy and healthy again. It really brought a smile to my face.

I've had my qualms with her but she seems to have sorted herself out in many ways and was very gracious to Amber. Feel bad for her that she's had to gain weight for a role and says she's struggling to lose it though, can't be fun!

I know right, she gained it for The Moorside, but with the stress of everything, it is understandable she has been struggling. She'll get there, probably by the end of the tour. She is naturally beautiful so thst helps haha.

I was on Twitter during the first hour and the awards themselves didn't even register in the top trending topics list. Amber did, however, and most of the talk seemed to be that people were impressed. That apart, these awards were severely lacking in "wow" performances this year. Very underwhelming and not sure they did most of the shows any favours.
