I'm a huge Take That fan but Gary, for goodness sake, yet your shows actors represent themselves!

2 DAYS after the ceremony!? I suppose the pay off is that it will be shown on prime time TV

Given it's in the ITV Tuesday death slot, I'm not more than 2m viewer, maybe even less.

It's stupid. Just air it live. Put it on ITV2 if necessary. It's bad enough that the BAFTAs get aired a few hours later but at least it's on the same day and at least they show it in full unlike the ridiculous highlights show the Oliviers always do. They'll probably cut whatever Audra does but give us Gary Barlow in full.

The point of televising award ceremonies live, is that the audience have no clue who has won what, so pointless watching the awards 48 hours later, when we will be all aware of the winners and losers, it is like watching a recorded football match and knowing the score already!!!

Or like watching a new production of Hamlet when you're already familiar with the story!
You are aware there are performances involved in theatre awards, right? And that people wear fine clothes and give speeches? If you just want the results, go to bed early and read the news the next morning, or follow one of the Twitter accounts dishing out results as they happen. If you're watching the whole ceremony, it's because you want MORE than just the results, and the MORE doesn't date just because you already know who won.

I'm surprised Sky Arts haven't taken it on, or perhaps BBC4. Given it's a set of awards for London theatre, it's just too niche for the mainstream ITV1 audience. I guess that's why Gary Barlow is performing, everyone will have heard of him, but I doubt many people outside of the theatre set will have heard of Audra.

Maybe there is some kind of advertising tie up between the sponsor and ITV.

I have no interest in watching it this year at all. I will YouTube some speeches, but I don't wanna sit just to see nominations kinda don't care about too much bar a few catagories and watch Gary Barlow roll out that stupid piano again and take the attention from the nominated cast members.

Hi everyone!
This is my first post here but I've been lurking for a while.
My friend and I happen to be having a theatre weekend in London completely randomly coinciding with the Oliviers which we've never managed to do before. Sadly the tickets to the actual ceremony are beyond our budget but we thought we'd try and give the red carpet a go seeing as there appears to be no piazza event this year. According to the website the red carpet appears to be a wristbanded event which is fine as we've done this kind of thing before but I just wondered if anyone who has done this previously knows roughly how many wristbands are handed out and how busy it gets? Are there are lot of people (autograph touts) already queuing at silly-o-clock in the morning or is it usually a fairly select crowd of hardcore theatre lovers?
Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, like I say, this will be our first experience of the Oliviers so we're just trying to gauge how things usually work and what our chances of getting in would be. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

If you're watching the whole ceremony, it's because you want MORE than just the results, and the MORE doesn't date just because you already know who won. I understand what you're saying but I still think the main reason people watch award shows is to see the results. It makes it far more exciting to watch it happen in real time. Realistically, not every performance and speech is going to be interesting to someone so if you already know the results, you might as well just watch what you're interested in on YouTube rather than sitting through the entire ceremony full of results that were announced two days earlier. Imagine a scenario when people found out about this years Oscars mishap via Twitter rather than being able to see it live. I know not everyone is quite as invested in awards as I may be, but seeing that happen live was one of the most thrilling things I've ever seen on television to be honest. With the BAFTAs and how the Oliviers have been in previous years, you could at least manage to avoid spoilers for a few hours or so if you really wanted to. Trying to avoid them for two days is pointless.

Thanks Theatre Monkey and thanks for the welcome. I've had a quick look on there but there doesn't seem to be much information. Maybe more will be released nearer the time- I shall keep my eyes peeled.

Is Best New Musical still the tough one to predict? I can honestly see it going to any of the four, I really don't know which way it is gonna go...

Groundhog Day, I'm guessing See that seems the obvious choice, and what I think ultimately will happen. But I can't help but have School of Rock or The Girls prodding the back of my brain. And even Dreamgirls!

I loved Groundhog Day more than any other British-born musical I've seen in years, so I've very much resigned myself to it winning nothing at all. I would be very happy to be proven wrong, at least there's not long to go now!

In a further reply to laceyjames, I asked and found out that they think it is tricky to answer because it's not done it at the Royal Albert Hall before. They feel that there is quite a bit of space for spectators so would GUESS that if you queued up from around 10am you should be fine to get a wristband at 11am. Much of the time it’s passers-by who hang around to watch red carpets so I think if people are having to come early to collect a wristband it will probably be calmer. They hope that’s helpful, sorry they can’t advise more as they don’t really have a previous experience to draw upon. Thanks very much for this Theatre Monkey! That's really helpful! I guess the absence of the piazza may also have an effect although, like you say, it is hard to know with it being the first year at the Albert Hall. Will go along and see how the land lies on the day! At least it's meant to be nice weather for it!

Wow, Shenton is predicting all three of Half a Sixpence's nominations to win. I personally can see two of them winning (Charlie and Emma) but I don't think Ian will win up against Adam.

That being said, if Emma and Ian do win (especially as much as I want Emma to finally win an Olivier!) it is a travesty that they win for these performances as opposed to their performances in Henderson.

Hmmm, I think he's quite off the mark on some of those.
School of rock winning best musical? I really hope not! If anything I think Dreamgirls has the best chance. I also think Adam will win for featured actor.

Does anyone much care? The Oliviers are too much of an industry puff fix to be taken seriously.
They'll need to be renamed again before long. When I went on the NT tour recently, and the guide proudly told how the NT was founded by Laurence Olivier and then responded to the pregnant silence by asking how we all remembered him, he was met with utter bafflement and absence of name recognition from one of the party.

I personally think they are fun. They aren't serious really, it is just an excuse to see my favourite musical theatre performers in stunning outfits other than their costumes onstage. I am mainly in it for the fashion and to see Emma Williams or Victoria Hamilton-Barritt finally win an Olivier award. Other than that, I could not care less what happens this year really. We know Harry Potter is gonna sweep, so there won't be any big surprises, other than probably the Best Musical category!

You give it all that "I couldn't care less who wins" stuff but then let's watch you go all 'Patti LuPone mobile phone meltdown' when Emma and Victoria get elbowed out of the award by Haydn Gwynne.
