I do agree that she is leading, but I just think it could be debatable. I've seen both performances and as amazing as they both are, I really think Gina should get that nomination, she is phenomenal!

Anyone who has seen Harry Potter, what do you think their chances are over there for nominations or wins?

How is it determined if there will be 4 or 5 nominees in a category?

How is it determined if there will be 4 or 5 nominees in a category? I guess it is just if there are enough worthy contenders? Like last year, all of the Leading performance catagories had 5 nominees whilst every other catagory only had 4 nominees. I prefer 5, as it gives a wider variety (although last year, Best Actor in a Musical had 5 nominees from 3 different musicals, so not much variety there!)

Anyone who has seen Harry Potter, what do you think their chances are over there for nominations or wins? Performance-wise, there's only one super stand-out (though obviously the others are extremely good too) so I don't think it'll sweep the boards in the acting categories. But it is technically EXTREMELY good, so there could be all sorts of directorial and design awards winging its way. Also, I'd be very surprised if it doesn't get Best New Play, as that seems to be an overall award rather than a writing-specific award. To be honest, it's only the writing that lets it down, and as there isn't specifically an Olivier category for writing, then there's no real reason why it shouldn't do very well indeed (but let's see what else there is before committing to predictions).

Looks like Half A Sixpence will now be officially eligible for the 2017 awards, now that it has announced to open in October!
But after seeing Groundhog Day, I really hope it will get a load of nominations (AND WINS!) and won't be snubbed like many Old Vic productions do, with the exception of Kiss Me Kate in 2013. So maybe the musicals do have more of a chance!

Is Half a Sixpence a new musical or musical revival?

Is Half a Sixpence a new musical or musical revival? Interesting one. It features original material, which to me would suggest it should be classed as a revival, but it is being marketed as 'the NEW flash, bang, wallop musical'. I'd put my money on revival, though.

Yeah I originally had thought revival but then I saw that Stiles & Drew had written new music for it and CamMac was producing the "new" version. I would agree revival too though as there are lots of brand new musicals that will be trying to be nominated (unlike last year) but not so many revivals

I suspect they'll put it in whichever category they feel like putting it in, as they'd be able to justify it either way.

I suspect they'll put it in whichever category they feel like putting it in, as they'd be able to justify it either way. To be fair, I imagine it's got about as much chance of winning in either category as I have of scoring with Greg Rutherford so it won't matter which one they put it in.

Remember, to be eligible it has to run for thirty performances in London.

Well, in 2012 The Wizard of Oz was classed as a revival even though it had new songs and book by Andrew Lloyd Webber (after the 1987 RSC Barbican version), so I'm guessing Half A Sixpence will also be a revival. With that, maybe Stiles and Drew could be nominated for "Outstanding Achievement in Music" or something?

So they announced at the end of this year's Olivier ceremony that the 2017 awards would be presented on 9 April at the Royal Albert Hall after five years of continuous presentations at the Opera House.
So -- early predictions? -- who is eligible, what shows are eligible as of now, what shows will be eligible come April? What do you think could sweep at this early stage?

Will Groundhog Day be eligible? If so it is bound to be up for Best New Musical and Best Actor In A Musical.

@anthonyhope , welcome to Theatreboard.
There's already a lengthy thread about the 2017 Oliviers in the General section, so I've merged your thread into that one.

Will Groundhog Day be eligible? If so it is bound to be up for Best New Musical and Best Actor In A Musical. It is indeed eligible as The Old Vic is and there are more than 30 performances! Thrilled as it will most likely be nominated in a few categories. It could even win Best Actor in a Musical! I think it could get nominated for:
Best New Musical Best Actor in a Musical Best Theatre Choreographer Best Lighting Design
Much as they are great, I don't think any of the other cast were award-worthy. All of the roles are too small and ensemble based to justify a nomination really and whilst she was good, I don't think Carlyss Peer has much of a chance either.

Agree has a good shot at best new musical, (think this will not beat Aladdin) best actor and maybe choreography. However I thing Jesus Christ Superstar has it in the bag for lighting.

It's a sad year if Aladdin is considered a frontrunner...

From what the critics have been saying, it would be extremely surprising if Aladdin were to take the award over Groundhog Day. I know the whole thing's politicised now, but Aladdin nonetheless still doesn't strike me as the likeliest victor.

We're very proud of Groundhog's creative team! They're our golden boys!!!

I think it's safe to say that, unless the King Lear production is a hot boo boo mess, Miss Jackson (Olivier-less legend) is winning Actress.
