After 15 Years of Ruining Unsuspecting Tourists’ Family Vacations, Avenue Q to Close
Avenue Q, The little show that could, is closing in April after a 15 year run on and off Broadway. I was the target demo (a few years out of college) when I saw this in the spring in 2004 and I fell in love. In total I've seen it 3 times, 2 on Broadway and once off. I'm going to buy a ticket when I'm in NYC in January on last time. On a happier note, I wounder if they will go meta for that final line in "For Now."

Such a shame. One of my go to shows every time I’m in New York and one where you can’t help leaving uplifted.
So glad it survived the 15th anniversary celebrations.
I’m not surprised it’s closing. In some ways I’m surprised it lasted so long as it’s been playing to half empty houses for a long time. But still disappointed.
In many ways, I think Jersey Boys moving to New World Stages spelled the end, as it just didn’t leave enough stages free for new shows.
Hope I do get back to NYC before closing night for one last visit.

And I did! So nostalgic watching this last night, it’s been over nine years and it’s pretty much the same as the West End version which I saw 6 times across the West End run. It’s feeling a little dated but the audience still lapped it up. Was able to get front row rush tickets for $27. A bargain. and of course.... Donald Trump is only for now! [/spoier]

Aw Avenue Q will always have a special place in my heart too. I saw it lots during my MA year in London, and it always cheered me up- and was such an antidote to the pretentious nonsense we often got sent to watch for the course. I never saw it in NY sadly, always feeling there were 'other things' to see. But it's the little show that could and I'm sure it'll be back .

Gosh, I didn't realise it had been SO long since I saw Avenue Q, but the lyric has always been "George Bush" when I've seen it on stage so... YIKES.

Closing night for Avenue Q in New York tonight.
They've posted a really cute video with the puppets here:

I'm going to miss this show more than most shows that close. Any idea what's going to happen to the puppets? They need to be preserved and not thrown into the dumpster.

They've sold a lot of the set on eBay, so that won't be seen again. I don't know if it's like the UK tour, but the puppets for that one are hired (and also used by amateur productions). I can't imagine the puppets will be thrown away, they'll be worth a lot more than the set.

I did an amateur production of Avenue Q with reproductions of the original puppets (NOT the ones currently doing the rounds with Selladoor which are a bit off compared to the originals) and I don't know what the valuation was on them, but the insurance was in the thousands.

If I recall correctly, there are several sets of puppets available for hire in the UK (with the original set presumably matching the original US puppets). The original designs are copyrighted, so anyone who wants to create a set running in competition has to come to up with a new look for the characters.
