If you want to get REALLY technical, the term "Off-Broadway" only applies to a certain number of theatres within New York City. Off is not always the opposite of on.  |

Great story with a interesting first half but it appeared to lose its way a little in the second. Although lots of people around were crying so what do I know? Very well cast and staged. Some good songs and then some not so.I enjoyed it a lot but I do feel it needs work. The theatre is designed by Rem Koolhaas and very good it is too, intimate and with great sightlines.   |

I saw the final preview of this while I was in NY for an interview..one of the people on the panel of my interview was the creative producer of 2nd Stage! Lots of Broadway media types were abound..Richard Ridge (BroadwayWorld), Paul Wontorek (Broadway.com), Frank DiLella and I think I spotted Stephen Flaherty as well.
The good: original musical with an original book and score that isn't based on a movie and isn't a jukebox musical (not that I mind either, but I think it's getting a bit crowded with both). It was desperately trying to hop on the Dear Evan Hansen bandwagon but with a lot less originality. Tom Kitt's music sounds exactly as what you'd expect it to sound like and they sing a lot even when it's not necessarily called for. In fact, the singing spots were completely unoriginal and cliche. Poor Kate Baldwin (who sounds amazing) has at least three ballads that are more or less about the same topic. It could use a lot of trimming, and I think some scenes and songs by different characters could be merged into one musical moment and achieve the same effect while being more theatrical (and faster!). Overall, it's just not punchy at all and struggles to create an emotional connection. It has room for improvement and could be better, but I can't see how it'll ever escape from being compared to DEH.

Saw this last night. It was very “generic musical theatre” I thought but did have some good numbers. I’d definitely give the cast album a few listens if they release one. The story was very simple - not a lot happened. I think the main thing for me was it didn’t connect and I could feel myself drifting away and not engaging with it.
Kate Baldwin was the standout here.
