As an actual arachnaphobe, I had to watch this partially from behind a cushion. I can’t STAND spiders and I will scream like a banshee if one bigger than a penny comes anywhere near me! I’ve been known to haul my Dad out of bed to catch a spider for me at 1am cos the earache from him is better than the spider! I’ve been known to get in my car and drive to McDonald’s to go to the loo cos there was one in my bathroom.
I HATE them! So I was never going to enjoy this episode, but there were some nice comic moments, Ryan doing shadow puppets in the background of the lab and the Doctor ‘are you Ed Sheeran!?’ I think my fave companion is Graham, I’m really enjoying Bradley Walsh’s performances, he’s touching and funny. Pleasantly surprised!

Ha ha thanks theatemonkey! Yeah I’m not too happy about them changing it from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day, it’s become a Christmas tradition to watch Doctor who while fishing all the orange creams out of the quality street! I’ll just be hungover and miserable all New Year’s Day and annoyed I have to go back to work the next day. Booooo to this announcement!

I think it's interesting that the two best companions from the reboot for me (Catherine Tate and Bradley Walsh) have been the two "older" actors who come to the series with a well established persona behind them.

it’s become a Christmas tradition to watch Doctor who while fishing all the orange creams out of the quality street! Round here, it's a victory if there are any orange creams left by the time the Doctor starts. That is always the perk of being the one to offer to get up and get a box of chocolates - you can hide all the good ones before going back into the sitting room and then have a nice stash for Doctor Who time. It's also usually about the time I open the Baileys...

Slightly of topic, but did you guys know that John Lewis are selling pick n mix boxes of Quality Street this year? I was dreaming of having a massive tin of JUST orange creams, but apparently you have to have at least 3 varieties. And for an extra £3 you can have a personalised tin! I’ve got a shopping trip booked to London in mid Dec and i’m Gonna be all over that!!!!

Short, chubby, always hungry and dangerous when approached - they based the Pting on me!
Seriously though, I thought this episode was ‘meh.’ Didn’t really excite me! And poor Mandip Gill, Yaz is such a boring character! Thank god for the eye candy Ryan and comic relief Graham!

A decent episode in my opinion and getting back to the more tradiitional elements of WHO. Surely the Pting creature is going to be made into a toy ready for Xmas?
Those of us who have noted that Mandip Gill is being criminally underused in the stories shown so far, so hopefully next weeks episode should rectify this situation as from the clips at the end of the episode for next weeks seem to focus on her character.

It was a more traditional episode. Lots of running through the same bit of corridor shot from different angles. Next week does look a bit 'message-y' again - Empire was a bad thing boys and girls.

I’ve got a shopping trip booked to London in mid Dec and i’m Gonna be all over that!!!! This is exactly what I bought a few weeks ago, Roxie . It's available in all JL stores now. STRONG advice is "go early, go late or be prepared to wait for hours." I went at 5.45pm on a Saturday afternoon in early October to Oxford Street and there was still a line of 8 ahead of me and a 20 minute wait. Apparently, it was treble that from 11am to around 5pm. It had slowed to nothing by the time I left around 6pm, though. The sales staff reckon it'll be even longer by Christmas. I think it is a bit hit and miss, I only waited 20 minutes in total (between the queues) when I went on a Saturday afternoon but someon had just bought 15 or so tins so I'd imagine the people just in front of me waited longer! I can see it getting very busy though!!
Back on topic I loved the little Hamilton reference, I wonder how many people got it. Overall loving the new Doctor

I’d better set my London based mate on it instead - he’ll be coming back to Stoke for Xmas he can bring em back for me!

Wow you are so "message"-sensitive you're ready and primed to sniff them out in later episodes and pre-emptively pounce! Then again, maybe not... You didn't think this last one was messaging in some way then? The Pting gobbling up all the energy = warning about us using up Earth's resources = bad.... or something? Come on, I'd have thought that might set your message antennae pulsing. I thought it was the best one since the opening episode. It had a good pace and more sense of actual peril. And 'Pting' sounds like a Don Martin sound effect, in case that makes sense to anyone. That's 3.5 out of 4 episodes so far by Chibnall. Do we know if he's writing more pound for pound than previous showrunners?

That's 3.5 out of 4 episodes so far by Chibnall. Do we know if he's writing more pound for pound than previous showrunners? He's only listed as writer for 3 more, so I think that's about on par with Moffat & Rusty. Even though previous showrunners weren't listed as the writers, on some episodes they pretty much rewrote everything. Anyway, I enjoyed this week. Felt quite like old Who - lots of running about corridors and technobabble ( although bits of it were real science for a change), a ridiculous monster and a last minute save by the Doctor. And at least one person got the Hamilton joke - Lin tweeted about it !

Apparently Chibnall wasn't originally supposed to write this week's episode - it was going to be by Tim Price who had to pull out for scheduling reasons, which is why he was credited for creating the Pting. I'm assuming that's the same Tim Price who wrote "Teh Internet is Serious Business" and "Protest Song".

Such a shame that Astos wasn't in the last episode for long. As well as being super foxy, Brett Golstein's chemistry with Jodie was glorious.

I saw a cynical tweet about the new series "Could the Dr travel back in time to when Russell T Davies ran the show". Rather cruel but amusing!
When they announced 3 assistants I was concerned that one of them could get lost in the background especially as Bradley would likely make most of his character. But we have had all their back stories and extended families so far. Maybe there hasn't been enough focus on Jodie in the title role?
The stories just seem to lack a bit of dynamism and the ending have petered out a bit, hopefully things pick up as the new Dr and sidekicks have settled in okay IMO.

I found it interesting that this week's episode had the focus on Yaz and still they managed to make her blend into the background. I think they've saddled themselves with too many assistants and I'm not sure they know what to do with her. Unless they are preparing for Bradley Walsh to do only one series and then have Ryan and Yaz as the companions when Graham goes.
Shane Zaza was very petty though so that was nice.
Graham's scene with Prem gave me a lump in my throat though. He really is turning into one of the best companions of the whole reboot.

For me it was an opportunity to really develop the character, but it never really happened. I think having 3 companions doesn’t really work. As you say, you always seem to get one person who seems a “spare part” and never really goes anyware or the writers don’t know what to do with them. Though I think this was a problem in the classic series as well. It doesn’t really help that you don’t get stories spread over a few episodes to allow the companions to have their own adventures within the stories to give you that character development. I must admit when when I heard that Bradley Walsh had signed up, my heart sank. I really couldn’t see him in DW. Though over the episodes, I really have warmed to him and I’ll happily admit I got it wrong. He has been a great addition to the show and is one of the better companions that has been present in the new series. I really do hope he stays beyond this series.

I don't know, I got VERY bored of David Tennant's regular "oh, it's YOU" schtick. The universe is infinite enough without getting time travel involved, it's not unreasonable to assume the Doctor hasn't encountered every species in existence.
I'm very excited we're getting into a run of episodes not written by Chibnall; I know we've only had six episodes so far, but when the best episodes have been written (or at least co-written) by someone else entirely, I do worry a bit.

First episode that I've really, really enjoyed. The concept was great, the final few scenes moving. A proper blend of sci-fi and intelligent emotional stuff without lecturing. As a "Hollyoaks" fan I think Yaz fading may be her acting style. She did it in that programme too. More worrying for me, I'm finding the Doctor's lines a bit too consciously quirky at the moment, and her schoolgirl "eh, what's that" reaction to everything a bit wearing. She's the Doctor, she already knows. Needs a bit of weight to her now, I feel. Jodie seems to be playing the Dr in her natural accent and she sort of reminds me of almost a Jane Horrocks type character, I agree she needs more gravitas as she is the fountain of knowledge who solves the problems.

.... She's the Doctor, she already knows. Needs a bit of weight to her now, I feel. No no no. Neither Hartnell or Troughton knew anything. They couldn't control their spaceship and, Troughton particularly, often won by accident. I think recent Doctors have been TOO knowing and godlike. It's good to have someone who might actually lose.

I do like JW, it is a bit 'we are giving you a lesson, look at the parallels' smack over head at times and yes 3 companions may be one too many but I got fed up with the whole thing several series ago and a new doctor has brought me back and I look to be staying.

It's a perspective, but she really is starting to irritate me that she really knows nothing at all and pulls that face and makes that squeaky sound at everything too. Luckily I'm not getting irritated and overall I like her but I see what's being said here, and together with the Horrocks reference earlier I do see there's a danger of the character becoming too like a sci-fi Bubble Out Of AbFab. The problem is, so far the various Doctors' personalities have tended to be established early on so I doubt there'll be much more gravitas but let's see. There have been a few "you need to be careful of me" moments which take some of the batty-northern-girl edge off. I found the idea of the latest episode, the Amazon fulfilment-centre type of setting, interesting. I suppose it was too tempting to resist.

Quite an enjoyable episode last night, although it seemed a bit confused as to what it was trying to say, a bit like a social commentary that found itself trying to argue two opposing sides of the same argument. It was nice to have an episode that managed not to be so morbid for once, despite the infinite scope of time and space they somehow keep landing in depressing locations this series.

Oh, I don't know, {Spoiler - click to view} I think the idea was to start off portraying massive retail systems as cold, impersonal and dehumanising - as many commentaries on Amazon have done - but then turn it on its head by having the system itself be the "good guy" and reveal it's one of the oppressed workers who's the baddie, as it were. Nice to see Claudia Jessie.
