The trump one sounds the worse of the season!

It was always strange that SR-B had never played Richard II as he seems perfect for it - now he seems possibly a bit old for the part but let's see.
The Trump one sounds like it will go down well in Islington and continues London subsidised theatre's obsession with all things American.
Why another "version" of Three Sisters ? The original is good enough.
For me the most interesting one is the Vassa production - the NT have an adaptation in the works too but the Almeida have beaten them to it.

This sounds fantastic. SRB, rare Gorky, Rebecca Frecknall. Time to rejoin the Friends.

Did you see the production in i think 2000 also by the Almeida? It was part of their WE residence. Good cast, Tennant, Duff, O'Sullivan, Hancock.

This looks like a great season and it's unusual to announce 5 productions at once. Particularly keen on The Hunt and Three Sisters.

Well, Simon Russell Beale as Richard II is a bit of a "WELL FINALLY". I loved how much everyone hated the last Anne Washburn, I shall be ALL over that one. Also anything involving Patsy Ferran is an absolute must-book.

I think they have already made themselves heard.

I think they have already made themselves heard. Yeah, it'll just be the usual MAGA rubbish, maybe with their racism showing. Usual reasons they give for voting for that moron.

Two month gap in between The Hunt and Vassa, enough space for an as yet announced show, maybe another Rob Icke? Heard Macbeth and Ibsen’s Enemy of the People rumoured for him, will be interesting to see what goes there though.

Shipwrecked performances start at 1:30 and 7:00, so probably going to be a long one.

SRB as Richard II - not sure I can buy that one. John of Gaunt maybe - but not Richard. I know we must not automatically relate Shakespeare's play back to the real history - but my sense of Richard is not one that can easily be captured by a man rapidly approaching his 60th birthday (no matter how talented)
No doubt it will be an intelligent and engaging interpretation - but it won't be how I would approach the casting for this particular piece. (The same applies to the casting of the Globe production)
Part of the play is the conflict between the generations - the Old Guard reluctant to give way to the new. Young men eager for their chance to run things - the hotheadedness of youth.
Not sure how that chimes with casting late middle-aged Richards. I know we have to wait to see the finished result and not prejudge. But I have been thinking recently about how I would approach the piece and this sort of casting is not what I see in the text.

In general I agree. But Kevin Spacey was very good in the role (although not as old as SR-B) playing it as a somewhat louche character who liked associating with the younger generation rather than the old guard. Not much of a stretch ... I know.

NT Live live broadcast for Richard II on 15th Jan.
Think this is the 1st NT Live for the Almeida (the Ralph Fiennes a few years back was s different company). Hopefully the first of many.

I am not saying it can't be played older, it is just not how I see the play.

Haha i was about suggest what role SRB might be playing! He should have played this 15-20 years ago. I will probably go as i have missed too many SRB Shakespeare performances but...

Dame Sir Lord Simon Russell Beale managed to play 23 year old Henry Lehman well enough recently . . .
Didn't Eddie Redmayne have a bash at Dicky 2 a few years back? Before the Oscar?

I've got some very terrible news for you regarding how theatre practitioners see the various plays; they're all coming at it from their own perspective and not yours. Sorry to be the bearer and all that jazz.

Ditto, though - when I saw SRB was going to be in RII my first thought was "who as?". Still, the recent Hamlets have been as old as Uncle Monty (if my maths is right, Richard Griffiths was around 38 in Withnail).

SRB will have about 6 weeks between finishing RII before reprising his Lehmans in New York. Nice to see he's busy.
