And I would absolutely agree with you anthem if she hadn't written the original film, directed the original film, was one of the stars of the film and deemed important enough to have a four page article about her in said programme due to her massive contribution to the idea and creation of Waitress. Without her there wouldn't even be a musical. I know that, I just wondered if there was a reason her mode of death was being smoothed over.

I think it would be more questionable if the details were included. People are going to see Waitress for a bit of escapism. Surely they don’t want to hear about a dreadful murder in the programme notes?

Having just finished my Sunday morning read of my programmes, I was a little surprised on reading the Waitress one to see that no mention is made in it of how Adrienne Shelley died. She is referred to as 'passing away' twice. I did a search on the board and there is only one mention from a comment last September. Is it deliberate from the marketing standpoint to not mention her murder as it's a 'frothy' musical. albeit with serious subplots? Passed away implies to me a gentle kind of death which hers was not. Does it contrast too starkly with the DV of Earl and the semi-stalking of Ogie do we think? Am feeling a bit confused and also I think it insults the memory of Ms Shelley. Or maybe they just didn’t want that person to take away anymore from her than they already did? Waitress is (imho) a beautiful film and musical and that should be celebrated rather than being overshadowed by the actions of one person, |

I apologise- even though I have the programme, I actually wasn't aware that she wrote and directed the film as well as starring in it. |

There was one time I was at Chicago and took my shoe and sock off. But in my defence I'd broken a toe on the way to the theatre and sitting there with a pack of ice on my swollen and blackened foot was the only way I was going to get home again.

I'd had it bounced on by a squirrel on the way through the park. It had done a lot more damage than I thought. Think dropping a 1lb bag of sugar on your foot, same thing, as the doctor pointed out. I did, at first, wonder if it was actually a bear on a daytrip...until I got to the 1lb bit. 🙂 |

I have to say. I finally got to waitress a few weekends ago. And being tall I chose an aisle seat to spread my leg into. Next to me was a patron who was shorter but wider. When we sat down we were cosy to say the least. No hassle on my part - but said patron kept pushing me. No hassles apart from the fact - Arms at 180• angles trying to drink Waitress milkshake, livestream friends and have huge weekend bag between their legs all at the same time. When it was obvious they weren’t going to get their way and push me off they went to usher to complain about seat. Couldn’t wait for me to stand up so practically tried to walk over me before I said - if you let me stand up you can pass easily. Oh ok ! I’m sorry ! And off they go and get further forward seats. No probs on my part. Happy with my seat.
I suppose my point is, as we look for new theatre audiences. Perhaps this is it. Feet dangling over balconies, live streaming and milkshake slurping. As in
my youth, theatre was seen as a posh event you dressed up for, but I dared to turn up in jeans. Perhaps theatre in the future is now an interactive night out. People want the comfort of their homes, but in a public space. Just a thought.

I liked the pic of Ashley. I thought it was cute. It was a classic “let’s try to make this really attractive woman look a bit dorky”. It reminded me of Annelle in Steel Magnolias when they had to dork up the undeniably attractive Daryl Hannah. A pair of specs usually comes into it 🤓 You probably have no idea how depressing this is to any woman who wears glasses. As the original person who said the pic was terrible (which I stand by) I wasn’t dissing Ashley and I wish her all the best. |

Came out of my spinning class and had nothing else planned and, thought 'duck it'. I want to see KMP and Laura before they go and didn't know whether I'd find time after this, so at around 13:00 I jumped in the car and drove to the Adelphi on the off chance of getting a last minute cheap ticket! Got there around 14:10 and managed to get a seat in the stalls, row e, discounted but still more than I wanted to spend! But hey I was here!
I did ask the Box Office assistant what sales were like, he said in the week like every show they drop but it's packed Fridays and Saturdays. He mentioned although the Upper circle was closed for the matinee they still had sold over 1000 tickets, which isn't bad going in terms of most WE theatres. I said do you think it'll go past October, and he was pretty certain it had quite a bit of life left in it. 'It's doing extremely well, regardless of all the chatter online. It's got a lot longer to go before it leaves!' were his exact words, which made me feel better about the show.
This show pulled me in and made me fall in love with it again. The cast in are in fine shape and nothing feels tired, if anything the harmonies sounded a *little* tighter than in previews! Jack really cannot sing but he really does know how to do comedy. The next Ogie won't have far to go vocal wise, but comedy-wise they'll be a lot to be desired. Marisha and Laura were on fire- Ashley's got her work cut out, and she'll have to work hard to smash this 8 times a week, that's all I'm saying. David Hunter was great as always. And KMP was captivating. She really does have a pure voice and does this ditzy score wonders.
It was like Theatreland heaven at the Adelphi! Spoke to Sophie Issacs in the foyer (she'd make a great Dawn...) she's the nicest lady. Then bumped into Jamael Westman on my way out of the theatre. Then when walking past stage door on my way to the car, I spy Rachel Tucker! I went and praised her for her CFA performance, she mentioned it was her birthday and Marisha was taking her out for a birthday meal! I love their friendship!!!
Good to see the show is in shape still. Doubt I'll return until Laura is back, as I have a hectic summer!

Also fair enough if you want something to snack on during the show, permitting you don't make heaps of noise. The lady next to me didn't but oh my god I haven't smelt anything like what she brung before; was practically gagging for air by the interval!
Also, one woman a few rows down, around 35-40, with a mate, must have thought they were at a sing-along performance. They were rocking their heads and doing that thing where they sing quiet thinking nobody can hear them, when in fact most of the stalls can hear their out of tune and time monstrosity coming from their internal organs!

Have to say I agree with danb on this one, regarding the ignorance and disrespect. A little tongue-in-cheek, true, but valid. Absolutely agree I work with teenagers, and there is a dire lack of respect for anything. If I was sitting anywhere around her I certainly would have said something. |
