I mentioned this in The Unfriend thread but I walked past the building that will house the new theatre and noticed that the license for the hoardings surrounding it only goes up to until November 9th, now I wouldn't take this as confirmation because licenses can be extended but it does suggest the theatre or at least the building will be opening sometime in mid to late November.

I don't mind Soho Place but the @ has to go! Has to say the theatre looks very nice, any bets what will go there? I saw on Matthew Hemley's twitter that the bar will be named after Nica herself which is fair enough. BurlyBeaR should we change the title of the thread now we have a name or keep it as it is.

Interesting to read that it's going to be a not for profit venue rather than a commercial venue which is unusual for Nica Burns.

...and the name of the new theatre is.... @sohoplace Does that mean that it would be referred to verbally as "At Soho Place" or as just "Soho Place"?

I think it's meant to be at Soho Place.

Embarrassingly they haven't even acquired the @sohoplace handles on social media, so spelling out the name of the theatre automatically links to some random user.
This is the 'Other Palace' for our times.

I’d rather they’d just rebuilt the Astoria. So many fantastic memories; you can never have enough sticky floored central music venues. 😭

It might not be Oklahoma! The other option is They Shoot Horses, Don't They? which was originally planned for the Bridge but currently undated.

According to a piece in The Times, the new theatre will offer, for the "first time" in a West End theatre, more toilets for women than men. But... I've worked in West End theatres and to be honest, I really don't think that's true! I'm pretty sure if I counted every cubicle and urinal in the buildings I've worked in, there would be several (if not all) where the womens' toilets outnumbered the mens'. It's bizarre what people will go after for a PR spin.

Yes, I am sure I've read other theatres saying they've got more women's loos than men's. I hope they've done research to work out more accurately the numbers needed rather than just a few more for women. Hopefully it's not the same designer who decided on cubicle numbers for the Donmar refurbishment.

"After The Times conducted a survey of facilities — counting seven cubicles in the female space on two levels compared with three urinals and one cubicle in the male areas — Burns said her “secret had been discovered”.
Thats still a very small number of toilets for 600 people.

It's bizarre what people will go after for a PR spin. I suppose they needed something to go after when they realised what a dead in the water name they’d chosen for the theatre.

Still beyond pissed off that this is the replacement for the Astoria. When they demolished that iconic London gig and club venue a bloody long time ago now, we were told we would get a new modern venue on the site to continue that legacy. And we've gone from a 2000 capacity music venue to a 600 seat theatre, not the same at all. Shame.

So you google soho new theatre and you get the one that has been there for ages. How do they expect people to find them, know what they are putting on and for goodness sake, what on earth has Soho got to do with anything? It is miles away from soho isn’t it? Might have been more fun to name it after Judi Dench or someone alive and kicking who could bring in the punters. What’s the first show, then? Anyone know?

I’d have liked them to have included Astoria in the name, so maybe something like Soho Astoria if they needed to include soho in there somewhere.
