In a minority, could be my play of the year.
Have been tempted to see it again, only afraid I may see the play most people have seen.

Simply one of the worst afternoons I've had in a theatre. My thoughts are on my site for those interested, but I wish I'd read the programme before I saw it, to at least understand where the whole concept came from. It really isn't very clear from the play itself. The only other note I had was that I think it is lucky Blanchett appears to wax regularly. Now, I know the patriarchy (and indeed female sisterhood pressures) impose such painful conventions on women, but in this case I think it may have been the "Health and Safety" officer at the National who gave the instruction. I mean, the amount of horrible cheap nylon she was sliding around in, with any stubble, a serious bush fire could have broken out at any time; and she'd have gone up like a Roman Candle. The costume designer should be shot. hahaha, poor her though......makes me think why she did not have any input at least material-wise since it will be her wearing those things......maybe she is fine with this, most people (which probably includes her) have very good skin that can handle a lot..... sorry I had a bit of a meltdown here earlier but seriously it could not have been a worse situation with the booking...

It probably has more to do with money...than her not having input.

shelbee didn’t we discuss that CB is unlikely to be bringing home the big bucks by doing this? I’m not hugely familiar with the economics of the NT, but I think people more in the know than me talked about the pay scale there. My take away was that that she was doing this because she wanted to/for the art, not for the cash.

So basically your leading role salary is a leading role whether your Roger Allam or Cate (though I’d love to see him in her outfit!!) so no she will not be making big bucks. Occasionally a donor can “incentivise” a star by helping with their, Oh day accommodation somewhere they’d like, but that’s viewed as “gifted” rather than a salary. Their salary will be top end theatre but nowhere near even West End star and light years from Broadway star salary. *drops NT research book* *runs away from this scary play*

Hi all - I have given my tickets to a friend as I can't make this now. Are they actually checking ID on entry to the auditorium?

The only thing stopping this from becoming a bigger production is lack of investors.

More importantly, why are you so entrenched in your argument? There seems be a balance of opinion (including a comment from someone who is writing a book about the NT so they are speaking from a position of informed authority) that CB isn’t making £££. Why not change your position, rather than doubling down with conjecture and conspiracy?

The reason she's not making money, is because there were rumors that produces wouldn't touch this play for West End or Broadway...where the money is.

No. The reason she's not making money is because she's doing a provocative, small scale piece of theatre at The Nash with a limited run. Nothing more, nothing less. She knew what she was signing up for before she heads back to Hollywood to actually make more money.

She knew what she was signing up for before she heads back to Hollywood to actually make more money. What he said. Actors don’t sign up to the Nash on the hope it’ll have a West End run or a Broadway one and rake them in the big bucks. They do it to do a play at The Nash. The only exception to the above is those who say “what if this play goes to Broadway and I’m not in it” but again it’s about the play not the money. Nobody works in theatre for the money full stop. If you do, you certainly don’t work in the subsidised sector.

Also to add to the above no investor would ever throw money at a Crimp/Mitchell Production as a money spinner no matter who was in it. It’s just not that kind of work. (Also all those dildos eat into profits)

(Also all those dildos eat into profits) Exactly. Cate Blanchett or no Cate Blanchett, I can't imagine any producer looked at this play or the creatives involved and thought "Yes, this could do really well in the commercial sector, let's put it on in London's glitzy West End". I really don't get why people don't understand that someone of Cate Blanchett's stature would want to do a play like this for next to no money (at least compared to what she gets in Hollywood) and not want or expect it to have a life outside of its Dorfman run and be satisfied by that.

In a similar way "Big and Small" didn't transfer to the West End or Broadway and was clearly never going to. The play is EXACTLY what anyone familiar with Crimp and Mitchell's previous work (or with the ability to use google) would have expected.
This appears to be how Blanchett chooses to run her theatre career and good luck to her! Would people be happier if she'd been cast as Del Boy in the Only Fools and Horses musical?
I suspect this will have a life beyond the Dorfmann, but at places like Avignon Theatre Festival, the Sydney theatre company Blanchett has a relationship with, and BAM in Brooklyn, not a commercial transfer. And I would think this was always the plan.

(Also all those dildos eat into profits) That'a not entirely true. Maybe not a combination of the two. Cate Blanchett did bring Big and Small abroad with the Sydney Theatre Company

You're right, they didn't look at this play as a money maker....which is why it's playing at the National Theatre. To think Cate Blanchett wouldn't consider bringing it to a broader audience, is ridiculous. She did this numerous of times with as the Director of The Sydney Theatre Company.
