Turned out to be a much better experience than I feared/expected. As a first off I was mostly worried about blood faint issue, the worry being sometimes worst than any actual red stuff so I had an uncomfortable first 15 minutes until I calmed down and felt it would probably be okay. After that I was expecting such madness, or terribleness that was pleasantly surprised. I bought a programme on the basis that people said the articles helped but was in fact too jumpy/tired to read more than the first one. I think having read Pamela even if eons ago did help, it gave context to some of the names and set ups. And then I just went with a not really over thinking it really, because it wasn't 'normal' I didn't pick holes in a way I might in other productions. Thought Cate Blanchette and Stephen Dillane very well matched and Jessica Gunning just great, I kept flicking over to watch her reaction to what was going on. Audience seemed not quite sure at end and it ended before I expected though arguably think it could have done with being half hour shorter. I've sat through boring and uncomfortable, this I kinda actually enjoyed, glad I saw it, will struggle to explain it to anyone though, they'd give me even odder looks than normal theatre explanations.

Btw, I've just noticed looking at the official cast photos that we didn't get Craig-who-was-ill on Saturday either. Glad they sorted out a replacement!

can we discuss things that happened in the play here? or would that be too spoilery?

hope this is fine...
soo....I wanted to ask - is my impression of what happened when Pamela gets fingered by Ross correct? - she asked/wanted to have fun with Ross and it starts ok but then Ross gets more violent and it kind of runs into a rape? or that’s not what happened?

{Spoiler - click to view}Personally I didn't think there was anything dubious consent-wise with that scene. If I remember correctly, she tells him to start fingering her and Man encourages him through initial hesitance. He does then get a lot more confident, and I can see how his physicality could be seen as aggressive, but at no point did Woman seem uncomfortable. In fact, that whole sequence seemed to me to be about the power that both Man and Woman have over Ross - they are both controlling him and using him as a pawn in their game.

hmmmm....it did not seem to me like the Woman was enjoying it much...actually thought she was fighting him off once he got more aggressive and even pushed him off her

looked like she came to me, but by that point I was just desperate for someone to have some fun so I might be projecting

well, exactly...I thought so too first time around (when I was sitting far from stage) but second time front row I had a different impression....maybe she also changes it up?

Oh goodness @happysooz I cackled at that and also.... {Spoiler - click to view} Perhaps it's a lesson for all the men in the audience: you can't do the same thing every time and expect a woman to come!?

In a performance that is so...nuanced (is that the term? tightly wound?) I’d be surprised if she could just change that as she fancied. It’s not like riffing in Defying Gravity. I would think that this moment of ‘release’ would be carefully orchestrated. Maybe I am projecting meaning where there might not be any...

With a username like yours, that comes as a big surprise! I am tempted to read the play. Does it help?

It helped me to read the play! my username....you think it has any special meaning? its literally like xyz or aaa or whatever... XXX is basically shorthand for porn. Google it (prob not when you’re in work though.) So yes, I did make an assumption.

Turns out I was not tortured enough.
My reticence to seeing it again was misplaced, this is a play that needs and deserves multiple viewing.
The depth, the writing, the performances, all are exceptional and more, much more than my earlier eulogising, again thank you those who returned their tickets.
Having seen two Crimp plays this year, I only wish that I had encountered his work earlier, will be actively searching out opportunities to see more of his work going forward.
This production deserves a further life.

Felt bad for the Chinese tourists in the front row yesterday. Were visibly saddened at being told by the staff at the beginning to turn off their phones and not take pictures, spent 2 hours sitting through incomprehensible dialogue even people with a reasonable grasp of the English language would struggle with, were visibly shocked at the blood, violence and strap on, clearly had no idea what was going on, and to top it all off had the flowers they had bought for Cate summarily handed to the other cast members during the curtain.
Second time seeing it myself, thought it was brilliant.

Taking up good seats, trying to take photos and then attempting to try and foist flowers on someone? GRRRRR. Can't people do basic research on what they're going to see (answer from most of the stuff in this thread: No).
