Is Shangela any good? I always thought she would be the most likely to cross-over.

Well, I loved it.
You forget how good Gaga's voice is. I could quite happily listen to her singing the phone book all day long.

The song "Shallow", by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, has hit the UK Charts at #13. Gaga's highest charting single in two years and will no doubt climb higher with the new release of the film. It's a great song so really happy with this!

Saw this this eve..Oscars alert! Lady G is excellent in all depts....But I feel that Cooper is the star that really shines through...Acting and importantly direction is top notch. First half is stunning..Drifts down a little as gaga returns to her normal self stlye wise...But this really is an unmissble debut for Cooper in a directional role...

First third is raw and exciting and a bit of a revelation - it becomes considerably less interesting once the pop star ‘transformation’ happens. I bought the love story - just - I didn’t buy the music industry stuff. Enjoyed it, though. Features an adorable doggy!

I’m in the ‘I loved it’ camp too
Oscar noms for sure. Thought Gaga was absolutely superb - it’s sort of annoying because it proves she literally can do everything - but also it was the first time I’ve watched Bradley Cooper and gone ‘you really are an excellent actor’. Thought his direction was all fantastic.
My first introduction to A Star Is Born and I was a mess at the end.

The pacing a structure was all off, I just started getting bored an hour into it. The character is all about being “real and true” in the songwriting, but apart from refusing to dye her hair blonde (then changing it to another colour instead), she then seemingly overnight transforms into a fluffy pop princess with little substance at all. Apparently something was said to say it happened over the course of four years, but the sense of time made it seem like it all happened within one year. There didn’t seem to be any time for that kind of story telling, yet there was time for about an extra half hour of performance after performance.

Watched this for a second time tonight (I was lucky enough to be at the UK premiere but felt pressure to Be Cool and not sob my way through) and I just really love this film. The cinematography is beautiful, the music and love story hit all the right emotional notes for me AND there's the cutest dog in it. I'll probably go a third time soon enough!

I get that ‘A Star is Born’ is, in essence, about that process, but I would have preferred to have had her experience some inner conflict about it. She has none, which is curious, as it makes her oddly passive as a character.

I also didn’t quite get the scene where she punched the guy in the bar. It was like that aggression came out of nowhere and that side of her personality was never revisited again.

Yes, and we never see her struggling to deal with that aspect of becoming famous herself - she’s essentially saying she couldn’t handle it herself when she sees it happening to him, but all that is forgotten later.
We never even see her dealing with the fallout that her manager describes from the incident. It’s almost as if there’s a scene or two missing.

There is something about Bradley Cooper that puts me off. He looks like an evil dolphin. However You all make it sound like a film worth watching. However if you want to see a great performance by a woman watch The Wife with Glenn Close. Film performance of the year.

Bradley Cooper always reminded me of a human version of Cyril Sneer - the bad guy from the 80s cartoon The Raccoons. And I think only people between the ages of 33-40 will even get that reference.

Just watched this. She's sensational. Bradley annoys me greatly (but I already knew that); he's one of those overrated actors everyone seems to love.

I just got back from seeing this. I would agree with the other posters that the first hour is by far the best part - after that I started checking my watch every so often. The leap from budding newcomer to grammy-nominated pop princess came too fast for me and I also didn't like that Gaga's Ally changed from a fairly natural-looking young singer to this super-glammed up look, practising dance routines and so on, I'd rather see her stick with a country music trajectory or something. But I suppose the "pop princess" à la Beyoncé (and indeed Lady Gaga herself) is currently the best a female performer can aspire to.
Always been a fan of her and I thought she was terrific and worth seeing this for. Cooper was okay as an actor for me, but as a director I would like to see him hung, drawn and quartered for over-use of the shaky handheld camera. It doesn't lend "authenticity" or "edginess" to a movie as directors seem to believe, it just gives me a headache.
Figures that the only one I recognized apart from the two leads was the kid from Hamilton.

Saw this last night. The best parts were the songs. Lady Gaga radiates when shes performing.
The story was alright. just felt like a lot was missing especially in regards to lady gagas character changing so much after saying earlier she wouldnt.
Overall it was highly enjoyable though.

Saw this at the weekend as well, can only really echo what everyone else said.
I thought that she was going to have some sort of epiphany during the SNL performance and start seeing a 'deep and meaningful' song. It felt bizarre that they had set her up to be a serious performer then it changed to just a normal pop princess. Lady Gaga was brilliant obviously.
When Bradley's character does what he does at the end the audience actually gasped. I wanted to shout 'did you not see that coming a mile off?!'
It was shot beautifully as well though, made it very compelling to watch.

In fact, at the beginning of the movie, when he's driving around the city looking for a bar, you see a clue: there's like a big banner on a building with ropes in it

I enjoyed it for what it was, ie inevitably very Hollywood hokum. However, in some ways I preferred the film I saw immediately afterwards (Private Life), which was un-showy and talky and took its time creating credible, rounded, sympathetic characters and left the end open. No, I am not comparing like with like and A Star Is Born does indeed deliver exactly what you'd expect and is undeniably great entertainment.

Just saw this - Lady Gaga is mesmerising, what a performance both in terms of acting and singing. The film would be nothing much without her.
Bradley Cooper played a slightly darker/more troubled version of characters he's played a million times before - he was fine. Didn't think much of a lot of his direction though, especially in the first 15-20 minutes - all those closeups were just a bit too close. Great work in the last 10 minutes though, and especially that closing shot.
Have to say I didn't think it dragged at all, barely checked my watch. I agree it's a shame Ally basically had to become a bubblegum pop star to make it, but at least there were still some songs with proper heart and showing her talent. Pretty decent film overall, elevated considerably by Lady Gaga's performance.

Saw it yesterday. She was very good (for god’s sake don’t let Madonna see it, she’ll go mad) but the idea that some slightly grungy Joni Mitchell type would immediately sell out like that seemed rather far fetched, not least because she is too old to be sent down that particular route. The songs in the first half were good, the rest very meh and that big one she sang at the very end... sorry but she didn’t pull that off. You need a Whitney type for that sort of number and as talented as LG is, she’s not got that sort of voice. In fact that song seemed totally at odds, style-wise, from everything else in the film.
I thought the drag scenes were unnecessary and forced, maybe a cynical ruse to pull the gays in, but not necessary because they’ll be going anyway. Willam was wooden AF.
I thought Bradley Cooper was lovely in it. Very sad and vulnerable. And for a directorial debut there were some really great moments. I don’t think it’s the five star film that people are saying it is though.

I saw it a couple of days ago, I thought it was amazing. And that is mainly because of the performances of the two leads. Both of them were fabulous. I'd actually argue I thought Bradley gave a stronger perforformance, but that is not to take anything from Lady Gaga who is also incredible. It's no surprise to me at all both are creating strong buzz for the acting Oscars and I wouldnt be surprised to see either or both win. For a directorial debut too, its quite impressive for a first time director to pull off a film like this, as well as to act in it as one of the leads. I suspect Bradley will also be a strong contender for Director too. Whilst I have a sentimental bias to Glenn winning, I'd love to see Gaga win. But if only one of them could win, I'd rather it be Bradley, because it's a fantastic performance and he should of won for Silver Linings in my opinion. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars for me, with two amazing performances and fantastic directorial debut.

I agree with what others have said, the pacing was all over the place and there was no sense of how long this all took place. Ally going from serious performer to manufactured pop star made no sense. It's also at least 20 mins too long.
At the end many of the women around me were sobbing.
My favourite part was the nod to Judy Garland when she sang the intro to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' A nice directorial debut, but not deserving of all the praise it's received.

There was a review in Sight and Sound - Gaga fans look away! - which said that Lady Gaga can certainly hold a note but that the problem was that she was reluctant to let go of it.
